There is no single threshold that makes every EMF reading “high.” First identify whether the reading is an extremely low frequency (ELF) field, a radiofrequency (RF) field, or another type; then check that the meter measures that field and compare readings taken at known distances and operating conditions. A detectable field is not, by itself, evidence of a health hazard.

What causes high EMF in a house?

Different sources produce different kinds of electromagnetic fields. Power-frequency electricity—typically 50 or 60 Hz—creates ELF electric and magnetic fields. Possible sources include building wiring, electrical panels, power lines, motors, and household appliances. Phones, Wi-Fi routers, cellular base stations, broadcast transmitters, radar, and microwave equipment operate in RF ranges. MRI systems can involve strong fields in specialized medical settings; they are not comparable to ordinary household sources.

Distance and operating conditions matter. Fields are generally strongest near their source and diminish with distance, but the measured quantity and the rate of change depend on the source and frequency. Appliance readings can also vary substantially between models.

  • Power lines: WHO gives indicative examples of magnetic flux density of up to about 0.2 µT in homes away from power lines and several µT directly beneath them. These are not predictions for a particular home; location and conditions matter. WHO: Electromagnetic fields
  • Household appliances: WHO reports historical German measurements attributed to the Federal Office for Radiation Safety (1999): hair dryers measured 6–2000 µT at 3 cm and 0.01–7 µT at 30 cm. Those ranges illustrate how distance and model can affect a reading; they are not values for every hair dryer. WHO: Electromagnetic fields

For context, WHO’s June 2007 ELF backgrounder estimated average residential power-frequency magnetic fields at about 0.07 µT in Europe and 0.11 µT in North America. These are estimates in that publication, not universal current baselines for every home. WHO: Extremely low frequency fields

TF2 EMF Pollution Meter – 3-in-1 Magnetic, Electric & RF Field Detection
  • Detects: Magnetic fields, electric fields, and RF (20 MHz–6 GHz; includes most 5G but not experimental millimeter waves). Does not detect radioactivity.
  • Displays EMF fluctuations fully: bars update instantly for fast digital signals, while RF and number averages refresh 4 times per second. Other meters over-average or filter field peaks, giving slower, less complete readings.
  • Features: 3-axis magnetic, single-axis electric (with standard or weighted frequency responses), and single-axis RF readings (unweighted). Weighted readings emphasize effects on the human body.
  • Measures: 4G and 5G cell phones, cell towers, WiFi routers, Bluetooth, AC Powerlines, and Smart Meters. The TF2 responds to RF very fast compared to other meters.
  • Includes: Trifield TF2 meter, 9V battery, Quick-start Card, Detailed Instruction Manual, and soft-shell, zipper carry case.

How do I identify an EMF source?

  1. Make a source list. For ELF, consider wiring, panels, power lines, motors, and appliances. For RF, consider phones, routers, transmitters, base stations, and microwave equipment.
  2. Identify what the meter measures. Check its frequency range, measurement quantity, units, and stated capabilities. An ELF magnetic-field reading is not an RF reading.
  3. Record a baseline and conditions. Note the location, distance from the suspected source, meter setting, and whether the device or equipment is operating. Repeat measurements under comparable conditions.
  4. Compare with the suspected source on and off, where safe and practical. Do not enter restricted areas or approach high-voltage lines, transmitters, medical equipment, or industrial equipment to take readings.
  5. Move farther away and repeat. A consistent decrease may help identify a nearby source. It does not, on its own, establish a health concern.

If the result suggests a possible exposure-limit issue, the environment has complex RF sources, or the meter cannot measure the relevant field, contact the utility, site operator, public-health authority, or a qualified measurement professional. WHO advises people with specific concerns to contact manufacturers or local public-health authorities. WHO: Electromagnetic fields

What device measures EMF?

An EMF meter can be useful for screening and comparing readings, but no one meter should be assumed to measure every field meaningfully. Before choosing or using one, verify that it covers the source’s frequency range and reports the quantity you need. ELF meters and RF meters measure different categories; a result from one cannot stand in for the other.

Field category Common examples Measurement quantities described by guidance
ELF electric field Power lines, building wiring, appliances Volts per metre (V/m), per WHO
ELF magnetic field Power lines, building wiring, appliances Tesla, commonly microtesla (µT), per WHO
RF exposure Phones, Wi-Fi, base stations, broadcast transmitters Power density in watts per square metre (W/m²) or absorbed power per mass in watts per kilogram (W/kg), as described by ICNIRP

Meter capability and measurement method affect what a number means. The cited guidance does not endorse a particular consumer meter, and a consumer reading is not a diagnosis of exposure-related health risk.

Is this EMF reading high?

There is no universal “high EMF” number that applies across ELF, RF, static fields, and other categories. Interpret a reading only after establishing the field type, frequency, measured quantity, instrument capability, distance, source operating state, and the relevant guidance for the exposure scenario and location.

Health statements also need to remain specific to the field type. WHO’s June 2007 ELF backgrounder describes established adverse effects from short-term, high-level ELF exposure; it said evidence for long-term, low-level exposure was insufficient to justify lowering the quantitative limits then in use. That statement reflects the backgrounder’s date and scope. WHO: Extremely low frequency fields

For RF, ICNIRP’s overview identifies heating of exposed tissue as the only substantiated effect relevant to human health and safety. This is an RF statement, not a conclusion about ELF fields. ICNIRP: Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields The U.S. EPA says EMF cancer evidence has not consistently established a risk from any source. EPA: Frequent Questions: Radiation Sources “Not established” does not mean “impossible,” and none of these statements turns a consumer-meter number into a health diagnosis.

Which exposure rules apply?

Rules depend on field type and jurisdiction. In the United States, EPA says there are no federal residential or occupational standards limiting power-line EMF exposure, while some states set standards. EPA: Frequent Questions: Radiation Sources This describes power-line fields, not RF regulation: the U.S. framework includes FCC RF exposure guidelines. FCC: Radio Frequency Safety
