Anthropic is reportedly offering Blackstone a yield above 10% to help finance a proposed $60 billion debt package tied to Google Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) leases. Reuters, summarizing a Financial Times report on October 16, 2026, said Blackstone funds would invest $9 billion, but Reuters also stated it could not immediately verify the report. Bloomberg’s October 2 account described the broader package as $42 billion of senior-secured debt and $18 billion of junior debt. The companies had not publicly announced the transaction in the cited reports.
What the reported financing would do
The proposed financing would support Anthropic’s access to Google’s custom AI chips rather than represent a conventional equity investment in Anthropic. The reported repayment source is Anthropic’s five-year lease payments for those chips. In that structure, lenders advance money against expected contractual cash flow, while the equipment supplier and the AI company remain central to the credit risk.
Reuters attributed the more-than-10% yield and Blackstone’s $9 billion commitment to Financial Times reporting. Bloomberg separately described a $60 billion Broadcom-linked package. These are reported terms, not confirmed closing documents.

Why a reported yield above 10%?
A double-digit yield would compensate investors for risks that are greater than those of the senior debt. The junior tranche is paid after senior lenders if the cash flow is impaired, so it normally demands a higher return. Blackstone would also be exposed to Anthropic’s ability to make lease payments, the performance and resale value of specialized chips, and the concentration of the transaction around Anthropic, Google and Broadcom.

- It is made up of premium quality material.
- Subordination: Junior debt absorbs losses before senior-secured lenders.
- Technology risk: TPU generations can become less competitive or less valuable before a five-year lease stream ends.
- Counterparty risk: The repayment model depends on Anthropic’s operating cash flow and continued demand for its services.
- Concentration: A structure tied to one AI company, one major chip platform and related infrastructure providers can correlate risks that look separate on paper.
- Illiquidity and documentation risk: Private infrastructure debt can have limited trading liquidity, and the final covenants, ratings and remedies determine actual protection.
The reported yield is therefore not a guaranteed return and does not prove that Blackstone has completed an investment. It is a term attributed to reporting about a proposed transaction.
How lease payments could support $60 billion of debt
In a lease-backed financing, lenders estimate the present value and reliability of scheduled lease payments, then divide claims into priority levels. Senior lenders receive payment first and may have security over contractual rights or related assets. A junior investor accepts later payment and greater loss exposure in exchange for a higher return.

That description explains the economic logic, not the final legal design. The cited sources do not identify the legal borrower, collateral package, maintenance obligations, default triggers, reserve accounts, ratings, covenants or closing date. They also do not establish whether Google guarantees any portion of the debt.
Secondary reporting has described the senior tranche as Broadcom-backed or guaranteed, but the scope and enforceability of any support were not disclosed in the cited material. Readers should not treat a supplier relationship as a blanket Google or Broadcom guarantee.

What Google TPUs and Broadcom contribute
Anthropic’s infrastructure agreement with Google reportedly provides access to up to 1 million Google AI chips. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that the arrangement was worth tens of billions of dollars and was expected to bring well over one gigawatt of capacity online in 2026. Google calls these specialized processors Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs.
Broadcom is involved in TPU design and has been linked to the financing support in reports about the proposed package. Earlier reporting from Axios described an Apollo-Blackstone-Broadcom platform backed by an initial $35 billion loan, intended to help Anthropic lease Google chips through Fluidstack data centers and designed to enable more than 20 gigawatts of compute capacity through 2028. That earlier platform is infrastructure context, not confirmation that the October package has closed.

Blackstone’s separate Google TPU venture
Blackstone announced a separate Google TPU cloud joint venture on May 18, 2026. Its release said Blackstone would make an initial $5 billion equity commitment, with the venture expecting to bring 500 megawatts online in 2027. Google would supply TPUs, software and services.

Blackstone President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Gray called the opportunity “a generational opportunity to invest capital at scale building AI infrastructure.” Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the venture would help meet demand for TPUs “optimized specifically for efficiency and performance in the AI era.” Those statements confirm a broader infrastructure partnership, but they do not verify the reported $60 billion debt package or the 10%‑plus yield.

Is Blackstone investing in Anthropic or buying the chips?
Based on the reported structure, Blackstone would be investing in debt issued to finance chip access and related infrastructure. The described asset is the stream of lease payments, not an announced purchase of Anthropic stock and not necessarily direct ownership of every TPU. Ownership, title, residual-value rights and enforcement remedies would depend on documents that have not been published.
What is Project North Star?
The cited Reuters, Bloomberg, AP, Axios and Blackstone materials do not establish a confirmed legal entity, financing vehicle or final term sheet called Project North Star. If that name is being used in market discussion, its relationship to the reported Anthropic financing cannot be verified from the public accounts described here.
Has the deal been finalized?
Not on the evidence available in the cited reporting. Bloomberg said the companies had not announced the package. Reuters reported the proposed yield and commitment while expressly noting that it could not immediately verify the report. No cited source provides executed transaction documents, a final coupon, a credit rating, covenant package or closing date.

Until those terms are published, the 10%‑plus yield and $9 billion commitment should be treated as reported proposals rather than completed financing.
