A source code beautifier—more commonly called a code formatter—automatically arranges code into a consistent layout. It applies rules for indentation, spacing, and line wrapping to make source easier to read. Formatting changes presentation, not the program’s intended behavior; it does not by itself fix bugs or prove that code is good.
What is a source code beautifier?
A source code beautifier is software that reformats source code according to defined style rules. It may adjust whitespace, indentation, and where lines break, then output the code in a consistent form. The goal is readability and uniformity across files or contributors—not a change to what the program is meant to do.
Current tool documentation more often uses the terms code formatter or format source code. Pretty-printer is another related term for software that prints code in a readable, structured layout. In practice, these names often refer to the same basic task: making code layout consistent.

A formatter applies rules that may be configured by a project or chosen as a tool’s default. Some tools parse code and print it again in a consistent style. Prettier, for example, describes parsing and reprinting code while considering line length. Its documentation also says formatting should preserve the code’s behavior and not affect its abstract syntax tree (AST). Prettier’s technical details explain this approach.

The result can be applied to a complete file or, depending on the formatter and editor integration, to selected text or changed lines. A formatter may be run from a command line, an editor, an API, or an automated check in a continuous integration (CI) workflow. Prettier’s API documentation describes programmatic use, while its CLI check option can report whether files need formatting.
What does a beautifier change—and what does it leave alone?
- It changes: code presentation, such as indentation, spaces, and line breaks, according to formatting rules.
- It is intended to preserve: the program’s behavior. Prettier states this as a correctness requirement in its formatting rationale.
- It does not automatically do: fix faulty logic, debug a program, scan for security problems, or refactor code into a different design. Cleaner layout is not proof that code works or is higher quality.
How do you choose a source code formatter?
Choose a formatter that supports the project’s languages and fits its style and workflow. For example, Prettier documents support for JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML, CSS, JSON, Markdown, YAML, and other formats. clang-format supports C and C++ as well as additional languages, and can use built-in styles or project settings in .clang-format or _clang-format. Black is a Python formatter and describes its output as deterministic.

Before adopting a tool, consider these practical questions:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Language coverage: Does it handle the languages and file types in the project?
- Style control: Does the project need an opinionated default, configurable rules, or compatibility with an existing style guide?
- Workflow: Can it run where the team needs it—inside an editor, from the command line, through an API, or in CI?
- Consistency: Does it produce stable output that suits the project’s conventions?
Some editors connect to external formatters rather than providing all formatting rules themselves. For example, Qt Creator’s Beautifier plugin documentation describes invoking tools such as Artistic Style, clang-format, and Uncrustify.

No. A formatter standardizes how code is laid out. A linter checks code against diagnostic rules, which may flag likely errors or style concerns. Their capabilities can overlap in some tools or configurations, but formatting alone does not establish that code is correct, secure, or free of defects. Use checks suited to those separate goals.
