The Samsung HW-Q990F is RTINGS’ best overall soundbar for music in its September 22, 2026 guide, but the right choice depends on how much space you have, how deeply you want bass to reach, and whether you prefer a single bar or a system with a separate subwoofer and speakers. The JBL Bar 1000MK2 is its mid-range pick, the Hisense AX5140Q its budget choice, the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) its compact option, and the Klipsch Flexus Core 300 its all-in-one recommendation.

These are different use-case picks, not a universal ranking. This guide explains what each offers for music and where its trade-offs matter.

How to choose a soundbar for music

For music, focus on stereo sound, vocal and instrument clarity, bass, and how well the sound fills your room. A feature aimed at films, such as Dolby Atmos or rear-channel surround, does not automatically make a soundbar better for ordinary stereo tracks.

  • Bass and space: A separate subwoofer can add impact and low-bass rumble for genres such as EDM and hip-hop, but it takes floor space. Satellite speakers add more boxes to place. A standalone bar is simpler and more compact, but generally gives up some bass depth.
  • Balance and soundstage: Listen for clear vocals and instruments, balanced stereo response, and a presentation that feels wider than the bar itself. A broad soundstage can make music feel less confined without requiring rear speakers.
  • Playback: Wi-Fi and supported music services can make streaming more convenient. Check the specific services and connection options for the model you are considering; support is not identical across these picks.
  • Control and fit: EQ, listening modes, and room correction can help tailor sound to your room and preferences. Consider the bar’s width, the subwoofer’s location, and whether you may want to add speakers later.

RTINGS says its recommendations draw on multi-stage testing and that it has tested more than 255 soundbars. That figure describes its testing coverage, not a music-performance score. The recommendations below reflect its categories and findings, rather than a personal audition for this article. RTINGS’ 2026 soundbars for music guide was updated September 22, 2026.

Five soundbars for music, compared

Model Best for Configuration Music strengths Trade-offs
Samsung HW-Q990F Best overall Bar, subwoofer, and satellite speakers Punchy bass, neutral midrange, seven-band graphic EQ, presets, room correction, and support for Spotify, AirPlay, Chromecast, and Wi-Fi Needs room for its separate components; RTINGS’ value advantage over the newer Q990H depends on changing prices
JBL Bar 1000MK2 Mid-range Bar and subwoofer, with detachable satellites Broad stereo presentation and good dynamics Treble is darker and voices more recessed than on the Samsung, according to RTINGS
Hisense AX5140Q Budget Bar and dedicated subwoofer Balanced sound and output RTINGS considers adequate for an average living room Less low-bass extension than pricier picks; lacks the JBL’s room correction and detachable satellites
Sonos Beam (Gen 2) Small rooms and compact setups Standalone bar, with optional expansion Warm sound and a stereo presentation wider than its compact size suggests; adjustable bass and treble and room correction Cannot match a subwoofer system’s bass rumble
Klipsch Flexus Core 300 All-in-one convenience Standalone bar with built-in subwoofers Clear, balanced mids; AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, three-band EQ, presets, Music mode, and basic room correction Wider than the Beam; built-in subs can rattle at high volume

Best overall: Samsung HW-Q990F

The HW-Q990F is the strongest fit in this group if you want a full system and prioritize bass impact alongside music controls. RTINGS praises its punch and rumble for bass-heavy genres, neutral midrange, seven-band graphic EQ, presets, and room correction. Its stated playback options include Spotify, AirPlay, Chromecast, and Wi-Fi.

The trade-off is the system’s footprint: the subwoofer and satellites need suitable places in the room. RTINGS says the newer Samsung HW-Q990H performs similarly for music but considers the Q990F better value because it costs less. That is a price-dependent judgment, not a fixed difference; check current local prices before choosing between them.

Mid-range pick: JBL Bar 1000MK2

The JBL’s detachable satellites give it flexibility: use it in a simpler bar-and-sub setup or position the satellites as rear speakers. RTINGS describes a broad stereo presentation and good dynamics, which make it a versatile option for music and other entertainment.

Its tonal character differs from the Samsung’s: RTINGS notes darker treble and more recessed voices. If vocal prominence is a priority, that difference is worth considering alongside the JBL’s satellite flexibility.

Budget pick: Hisense AX5140Q

The AX5140Q pairs balanced sound with a dedicated subwoofer, and RTINGS considers its output sufficient for an average living room. Its principal compromise is bass depth: the sub does not extend as low as those in the pricier recommendations.

It includes graphic EQ, but it lacks the JBL’s room correction and detachable satellites. Choose it when the budget and a separate subwoofer matter more than deeper bass or those extra adjustment and expansion options.

Compact pick: Sonos Beam (Gen 2)

The Beam is the most space-conscious choice here: it is a standalone bar with a stereo presentation RTINGS says sounds wider than its size suggests. Its warm sound, adjustable bass and treble, and room correction offer ways to adapt playback without placing a separate subwoofer in the room.

That compact setup cannot deliver the same bass rumble as the subwoofer-based picks. RTINGS lists the optional Sub Mini and compatible satellites as ways to expand the system, so the Beam can suit a small setup now while leaving room for additions later.

All-in-one pick: Klipsch Flexus Core 300

The Flexus Core 300 builds subwoofers into the bar, avoiding a separate sub while aiming to retain more bass than a typical compact bar. RTINGS describes clear, balanced mids and lists AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a three-band EQ, presets, a Music mode, and basic room correction.

Its built-in subs can rattle at high volume, and the bar is wider than the Sonos Beam. It also does not create the same immersive effect as dedicated rear speakers for surround concert mixes. It is a reasonable fit if you want a single main unit and useful playback choices, but not the best match if you need a very narrow bar or high-volume surround sound.

When to consider a premium alternative

What Hi-Fi?’s guide added the Focal Mu-so Hekla as its best high-end soundbar in a June 2026 update. The publication describes it as a strong performer for music and films and the most expensive model in that guide. Treat it as a premium alternative rather than a direct budget comparison, and verify local price and availability.

Listening preferences can also produce different verdicts. In its April 22, 2026 review of the Samsung HW-Q990H, What Hi-Fi? described warm, detailed vocals, taut deep bass, and natural balance, while preferring the Sonos Arc Ultra for music because of its richer, rounder, smoother presentation. Those are editorial listening impressions, not laboratory results or a guarantee of what you will prefer. Its October 2, 2026 review of the Samsung HW-QS90H likewise concerns a different model: after listening to Qobuz over Bluetooth in Standard mode, the reviewer found deep bass but vocals that could sound harsh at loud moments, and described the Sonos Arc Ultra as more expressive and cohesive but less deep in bass. Neither review is a direct comparison of the five picks above.
