A silent soundbar is usually caused by a wrong input, the TV still using its built-in speakers, an incorrect ARC/eARC connection, or a cable, pairing, or audio-format problem. Start by confirming power, mute, volume, and the soundbar source. Then follow the troubleshooting branch for HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or Bluetooth. Menu names differ by television and soundbar model, so use the labels in your manuals when they do not match these examples.
Power does not prove that an audio path is working. A bar may show lights, respond to its remote, and still receive no signal because the TV output, cable, port, or selected source is wrong. LG USA Support summarizes the common pattern this way: “If you can’t hear sound from your LG Sound Bar or external speaker, the issue is usually caused by an incorrect input setting on the Sound Bar, the TV’s sound output settings, or a cable connection issue.”
Start with the checks that solve the simplest failures
Do these checks before changing cables or resetting anything:
- Confirm that both the television and soundbar are powered on. A bar can appear active while its connected television is off or sending no audio.
- Press mute on both remotes and raise the volume on both devices to a clearly audible level. Some setups show a volume indicator on only one device.
- Press the soundbar’s Input, Source, or Function button and select the connection you are actually using: HDMI ARC/eARC, Optical/OPT, or Bluetooth.
- Open the television’s sound settings and choose the external soundbar or external speaker output instead of the built-in TV speakers.
- Play a source you know should produce sound, such as a broadcast channel or a streaming app. If only one app or input is silent, the fault may be with that source rather than the soundbar.
If these checks restore audio, no cable replacement or factory reset is needed. If not, identify the physical connection and use the matching section below.

Why a powered-on soundbar can still be silent
The power light only confirms that the bar has power. It does not confirm that the correct input is selected, that the TV is routing audio away from its own speakers, or that the audio format is one the bar can decode. A TV and bar can also be connected physically while using incompatible HDMI ports. Treat the problem as a chain with four checkpoints: the source produces sound, the TV output is configured, the cable reaches the correct port, and the soundbar is listening to that input.
That approach prevents a common mistake: buying a new cable before checking the source and output menus. A defective cable is possible, but replacing one cannot fix a bar left on Bluetooth, a TV left on TV Speakers, or an eARC setting that the bar does not support.
Identify the connection before changing settings
A soundbar’s selected input must match both the cable and the port carrying audio. Use this table to identify the correct branch.

| Connection | TV port and cable | Soundbar port and source | TV audio setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC or eARC | HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC | HDMI port labeled ARC/eARC or HDMI TO TV (ARC/eARC); select the HDMI/TV ARC source | External speaker, HDMI ARC, or a similarly named output; HDMI-CEC enabled in many setups |
| Optical | Optical digital audio output | Optical input; select Optical or OPT | Optical Digital, Digital Audio Out, or the corresponding wired external-speaker option |
| Bluetooth | No cable; the TV pairs wirelessly | Bluetooth input or pairing mode | The paired soundbar selected as the TV’s Bluetooth audio output |
A regular HDMI input is not the same as an ARC/eARC port. Port labels, source names, and menu wording vary by model and region. If you are unsure, read the labels printed beside the ports rather than relying on their position.
Fix no sound over HDMI ARC or eARC
Verify the two ARC/eARC ports
Trace the HDMI cable from end to end. One plug must be in the television’s port labeled ARC or eARC; the other must be in the soundbar port labeled ARC/eARC or HDMI TO TV (ARC/eARC). Moving the cable to an ordinary HDMI input can leave the bar powered on but unable to receive the television’s return audio. ARC is a return-audio function, so the TV port must specifically support it.
Select the external output on the television
On the TV, open a path similar to Settings > Sound/Audio > Sound Output and choose HDMI ARC, Receiver, External Speaker, or the equivalent label. Do not assume that connecting the cable automatically changes the output. Exact menu paths depend on the TV software and model. After selecting the bar, play a built-in TV source so that a set-top box or console cannot obscure the result.
Enable HDMI-CEC
ARC control and automatic input switching commonly depend on HDMI-CEC, the control protocol shared by HDMI devices. Manufacturers use different names; for example, applicable televisions from Samsung call it Anynet+. Turn on the TV’s HDMI-CEC option, then power-cycle both devices. If your soundbar has a separate CEC or control option, enable it as well. CEC names are not universal, so search the manual for CEC, device link, control, or the manufacturer’s branded name.

Check eARC support and the eARC switch
eARC works only when both the television and soundbar support eARC. If either device supports ARC only, use the ARC capability and settings. On models with a dedicated eARC menu switch, enable it when required by the manual. A TV may expose an eARC option even when a connected bar cannot use eARC; in that case, select the compatible ARC mode. Do not infer support from the presence of an HDMI socket alone.
Choose the soundbar’s HDMI source
Use the bar’s remote or controls to select its HDMI, TV ARC, or similarly named source. Some models display D.IN before switching to TV ARC; that sequence is model-specific, not a universal procedure. If the bar remains on Bluetooth or Optical, ARC audio will not be heard. Watch the bar’s display while changing sources so you know which input is active.
Reseat the cable and simplify the HDMI chain
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends, inspect the connectors, and plug it firmly back into the labeled ARC/eARC ports.
- Disconnect other HDMI devices temporarily, including a set-top box, game console, or receiver.
- Turn on the television first, then the soundbar, and test a built-in TV source.
- Reconnect the other devices one at a time after TV-to-bar audio works.
Removing other devices is an isolation step. It reveals whether another HDMI device is interfering with CEC or ARC handshaking. If sound disappears immediately after reconnecting one device, check that device’s CEC and audio-output settings before changing the working TV-to-bar connection.
Test a compatible audio format
A connection can be established while the selected audio format is unsupported by the bar. In the TV’s digital-audio settings, try a format documented as supported by both devices. PCM is a troubleshooting option identified in Sony guidance for applicable systems, but it is not a universal best setting and may reduce surround formats. Restore the preferred format after testing if PCM is not needed. Compare the specifications for both devices instead of assuming that a format offered by the TV is accepted by the soundbar.
Fix no sound over an optical cable
Check the cable path and input
Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input. Remove protective caps from a new cable if present, align the plugs, and push them fully into place. A red light at the TV connector can indicate an optical output, but it does not prove that the television is sending a supported audio stream. Make sure the cable is not connected to an optical input on the TV or to a similarly shaped non-audio port.
Set both devices to optical audio
Select Optical or OPT on the soundbar. In the TV’s sound menu, choose Optical Digital, Digital Audio Out, or the model’s equivalent external wired-audio option. If the TV stays on TV Speakers, the optical signal may be present but routed nowhere audible. Some televisions use a separate external-speaker selection in addition to the digital-output format, so check both menus.
Check format support
If the bar shows an optical connection but produces silence, compare the TV’s digital-output format with the soundbar manual. Some combinations accept only particular PCM or compressed formats. Optical also may not carry every format or control feature available through eARC, so use the manufacturers’ specifications to decide whether it is an acceptable long-term alternative. Optical is therefore a fallback, not automatically an upgrade over a working ARC/eARC link.

Fix no sound over Bluetooth
Confirm pairing and the active source
Put the soundbar in its Bluetooth input or pairing mode, then select it in the TV’s Bluetooth audio-device list. A television can remain paired to a different speaker or revert to its internal speakers after a restart. Verify that the soundbar is the currently selected Bluetooth output and that its source display says Bluetooth. Pairing alone is not enough if the TV has another output selected.
Use a phone or tablet as a separate test source
Pair a phone or tablet with the soundbar and play known audio. Sound from the phone points toward a TV output, pairing, or wired-connection problem. Silence from the phone as well as the TV suggests a soundbar, power, or input fault that needs deeper troubleshooting.
Bluetooth pairing details differ by model. Keep the test device nearby, remove stale duplicate pairings if the manual instructs you to do so, and ensure the soundbar is not already connected to another device that is playing audio. A successful phone test does not prove that the TV’s ARC or optical path is correct; it only shows that the bar can produce sound from at least one source.
Restart and isolate the system methodically
A restart clears temporary HDMI handshakes, Bluetooth sessions, and audio-output states without erasing all settings.
- Stop playback and turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Unplug both power cords for about a minute.
- Reconnect the audio cable and power, keeping other external devices disconnected for the first test.
- Turn on the TV, select a built-in source, and then turn on or wake the soundbar.
- Choose the correct soundbar input and raise both volume controls.
After the direct TV-to-bar test works, reconnect a set-top box, console, or other HDMI device individually. The device added immediately before the fault returns is a strong suspect for a CEC or format conflict. Avoid changing several settings at once; recording each test result makes it easier to return to the last known-good configuration.

Use a second source to locate the failed part
| Test result | Most likely area to investigate | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Phone plays through Bluetooth, but TV audio does not | TV sound output, ARC/optical cable path, TV format, or TV-to-bar input selection | Repeat the branch for the TV’s actual connection and verify the TV output menu |
| TV and phone both play normally | The original app, channel, set-top box, or console | Check that source’s volume, audio track, and output settings |
| Neither TV nor phone produces sound | Soundbar input, power, hardware, or a shared connection fault | Try another supported source and then contact manufacturer support if silence persists |
| Sound returns only after unplugging another HDMI device | CEC or HDMI handshake conflict | Reconnect devices one at a time and check their CEC and audio-format settings |
This test separates a television or source-setting problem from a bar that cannot produce audio on any input. It is more informative than repeatedly swapping cables because it changes the source while holding the soundbar itself constant.
When to replace an HDMI cable
Replace the HDMI cable only after confirming the port labels, soundbar input, TV output, HDMI-CEC/eARC settings, and firm cable seating. Samsung support identifies a defective cable as a possible cause, but a new cable cannot correct a wrong input or an unsupported format. Use a cable appropriate for the ARC/eARC capabilities specified by both manuals. If possible, test with a known-good cable before purchasing another one.

Optical is a reasonable alternative only when both the TV and soundbar have compatible optical ports. It can lack some eARC audio formats and control functions, so check the manuals before buying a cable or changing connection types. Do not buy an optical cable simply because the HDMI connection is silent until you have verified that both devices support the optical path and that you accept its format limitations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audio settings that commonly create silence
- TV speakers still selected: The TV sends sound to its own speakers instead of the external bar.
- Wrong soundbar source: The bar is on Bluetooth or Optical while the cable is HDMI, or vice versa.
- CEC disabled: ARC control or input switching may fail until HDMI-CEC is enabled on the TV.
- eARC mismatch: The TV is set to eARC even though the soundbar supports only ARC, or one device lacks eARC entirely.
- Unsupported digital format: The TV sends a stream the bar cannot decode; consult both manuals and test a supported option.
- Competing HDMI equipment: A console, receiver, or set-top box disrupts the ARC/CEC handshake.
- Bluetooth connected elsewhere: The TV or bar remains linked to another device, so the expected source is not active.
What not to assume
Do not assume that a lit soundbar is receiving audio, that any HDMI port supports ARC, or that eARC is available because the TV menu displays the word. Do not assume that a new cable will solve a settings problem, or that optical will preserve every format and control function of eARC. Do not copy a brand-specific button sequence to another model: Samsung’s D.IN-to-TV ARC behavior, for example, is not a universal instruction. When a menu label differs, use the equivalent option described in that product’s manual.

When to contact support
Contact the soundbar manufacturer or an authorized service provider after you have confirmed power, mute and volume, the correct input, the correct port, the TV output, and a second-source test. Bring the exact TV and soundbar model numbers, connection type, and the result of each test. If the bar is silent from the TV and another known-good source, continued cable swapping is unlikely to solve a hardware fault.
Manufacturer menus change by model and software version. Samsung’s support guidance was updated September 1, 2026, and its India guidance August 6, 2025; LG’s no-sound guidance was published August 19, 2026. Sony’s ARC/eARC guidance also recommends checking both devices’ support and output-format compatibility. Use those principles with the current manual for your specific equipment rather than assuming a menu label or feature is universal.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my soundbar on but producing no sound?
The most common causes are a mismatched soundbar input, the TV still set to its built-in speakers, an HDMI cable in a regular port instead of ARC/eARC, or an unsupported audio format. Check power, mute, volume, source selection, TV output, and the connection branch in that order.
Which HDMI port should connect to a soundbar?
Use the TV HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar port labeled ARC/eARC or HDMI TO TV (ARC/eARC). A normal HDMI input may not carry the TV’s return audio.

Can an eARC TV work with an ARC-only soundbar?
It can when the TV and bar are configured for their shared ARC capability. Both devices must support eARC to use eARC features; if the bar is ARC-only, select the compatible ARC mode and follow both manuals.
Why does Bluetooth from my phone work but TV sound does not?
A successful phone test shows that the bar can produce audio. Focus on the TV’s selected output, Bluetooth device selection, or the TV-to-bar HDMI or optical path. Recheck the branch matching the TV’s actual connection.
Should I replace the HDMI cable immediately?
No. First verify the labeled ARC/eARC ports, soundbar source, TV output, CEC/eARC settings, and cable seating. Replace the cable when it is suspected to be defective or a known-good cable fixes the problem; a new cable cannot correct a wrong setting or incompatible format.

When should I stop troubleshooting and request service?
After checking power, mute, volume, input, ports, TV output, cable seating, and a second source, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the bar remains silent. Provide the model numbers, connection type, and test results.
The Bottom Line
Start with power, mute, volume, and the selected source. Then verify that the TV output and physical ports match the actual HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or Bluetooth connection. Enable the needed CEC or eARC options, test a supported audio format, and isolate other HDMI devices. A phone test can separate a TV or cable-path problem from a soundbar fault. Replace a cable only when it is genuinely suspect; if the bar stays silent on multiple known-good sources, contact the manufacturer.
