To reinstall a sound card in Windows, uninstall its audio device driver in Device Manager, restart the PC, then test the output. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver automatically. This is a driver procedure for Windows 10 and 11—not instructions to open the computer and remove a physical card. Device names and options can vary by PC; follow the computer or audio-device maker’s guidance for model-specific drivers. Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guide covers both Windows versions.

Before uninstalling the audio driver

Check the simple causes first: make sure the intended speakers or headphones are selected as the output device, confirm system and app volume are up, and check that audio is not muted. If the sound is merely low or quiet, enhancements or an unsupported audio format may be involved; Microsoft’s low-volume troubleshooting steps cover those checks.

Save open documents and other work before proceeding. The steps include a restart, which may close applications.

Uninstall and reinstall the sound card driver

  1. Open Device Manager. Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
  2. Find the audio device. Expand Sound, video and game controllers, then locate the sound card or audio device associated with the problem. If more than one listing appears, identify the relevant device rather than removing unrelated entries.
  3. Uninstall the device. Right-click the device (or press and hold it on a touch device) and select Uninstall device. If Windows offers a checkbox to attempt to remove the driver, the wording and availability can vary by Windows version. Microsoft’s Windows 11 instructions describe selecting that option before choosing Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows. After the restart, Windows attempts to reinstall the audio driver automatically. Microsoft’s general Device Manager instructions describe this as an attempt, not a guarantee that the newest model-specific driver will be installed.
  5. Test the result. Select the intended output in Sound settings and play audio. Check Device Manager as well to see whether the device appears without an error.

For Microsoft’s detailed instructions, see Fix sound or audio problems in Windows and Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

If Windows does not restore the sound device

The device is missing from Sound settings or Device Manager

A missing output can result from a disabled device, a driver that is missing or not loading correctly, or another detection problem; it does not by itself prove that the hardware has failed. In Device Manager, check whether the device is disabled. To look for a hidden listing, choose View > Show hidden devices, then choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. Microsoft lists these checks in its guide to missing or undetected audio output devices.

The device appears, but audio still does not work

If Windows reinstalled a driver but the problem remains, you can try the generic audio driver available through Device Manager. If that does not help, get the driver for the exact PC or audio-device model and Windows version from the manufacturer’s official support page, then follow its installation instructions. Microsoft cautions against downloading drivers from unofficial sites. Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when the manufacturer offers a newer model-specific one.

Audio stopped after a Windows or driver update

If the sound worked before an update and failed afterward, rolling back the driver may be more appropriate than uninstalling it. In Device Manager, open the audio device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available. Microsoft presents rollback as an option for this update-related situation.

What this procedure does—and does not do

“Reinstalling a sound card” in this context means removing and restoring its Windows driver through Device Manager. It does not involve physically removing or reseating an internal card. The steps are for Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels, available devices, and driver options may differ by system, so use the PC or audio-device maker’s instructions when a model-specific driver is needed.
