Yes. Android users can try Google Sound Amplifier with headphones; iPhone users can use Live Listen with a compatible listening device. Both can send amplified nearby sound to headphones or a hearing device, but the setup, supported accessories and controls differ. These are assistive listening features—not a diagnosis or a replacement for hearing aids or individualized care for long-term hearing loss.

Choose based on your phone, the accessory you already own, and whether you want to hear a nearby speaker or audio playing on the phone. Availability can vary by device, region or language; verify current support before relying on a feature.
How to use Sound Amplifier on Android
- Install Google Sound Amplifier from Google Play if it is not already on your phone. The listing specifies Android 8.1 and later; device and feature availability may vary.
- Connect wired or Bluetooth headphones, then open Sound Amplifier. Headphones are required.
- Adjust the available controls for your surroundings, including noise reduction, quiet-sound boost and frequency boost. Some supported setups also offer left/right adjustments.
- If you have a Pixel 3 or later and want to focus on a conversation partner, try Conversation mode. Google’s support documentation describes this as a way to focus on that person’s voice.
Bluetooth performance can vary: Google warns that some Bluetooth headphones may add delay or reduce audio quality. If that happens, try a different pair or wired headphones, provided they connect to your phone. Google also notes that some settings behave differently with Bluetooth headphones than with phone media.

How to turn on Live Listen on an Apple device
For a Made for iPhone hearing device, Apple’s current instructions are: Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices, choose the connected device, then tap Start Live Listen. Place the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch near the person speaking; the device sends the microphone audio to the connected hearing device.

Apple also lists AirPods and supported Beats headphones as Live Listen destinations. Live Listen requires a compatible output device, so check Apple’s current guidance for your specific phone, operating-system version and accessory. Feature availability may vary by region or language.
What these features can—and cannot—do
A phone can serve as a microphone and route sound to compatible headphones or a hearing device, which may help with a nearby conversation or other listening situation. It cannot guarantee clearer speech in every room: background noise, distance, the accessory and audio delay all matter.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust’s October 2023 patient factsheet describes smartphone apps as a possible temporary aid and says hearing aids are the best option for long-term hearing loss. If hearing difficulty persists, seek individualized hearing care rather than treating an amplification feature as a diagnosis or substitute for treatment.

The Google Play listing says Sound Amplifier uses microphone access to process audio and reports that no data is collected or stored. It separately says the app’s accessibility service can observe actions, window content and typed text. Review the current app permissions and disclosures on your device before use, especially because app disclosures may change.
