Godlike.Host offers hosted Soulmask servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
A Soulmask dedicated server can fail at several different stages: the executable may close before launching, Steam may fail to initialize, the process may run but be hidden by blocked ports, or an update may leave the server and client on different builds. Start with WS/Saved/Logs/WS.log, identify the stage that fails, and then apply the matching fix below. Do not treat an empty server browser as proof that the program never started.
First, identify what “not starting” means
The remedy depends on the symptom. Use the console window and the log rather than repeatedly restarting the same batch file.

Read the startup log before changing anything
The documented log is WS/Saved/Logs/WS.log inside the dedicated-server installation directory. Open it immediately after a failed launch and inspect the newest entries. The console and log also print the server invitation code on the first run; if that code never appears, continue diagnosing startup output instead of assuming the browser is merely delayed.

The Soulmask FAQ documents this pattern:

What a failed initialization looks like
Two useful failure signatures are:

An App ID of 0 means Steam did not initialize the game-server API. Fix that condition before spending time on browser filters or player passwords.
Repair the Steam App ID
A missing or misplaced steam_appid.txt is a documented common cause of the App ID 0 result. Create or correct the file in the binaries directory used by your platform. It must contain exactly one line:

- Stop the server process.
- Open the server installation folder and navigate to
WS/Binaries/Win64/. - Create or open
steam_appid.txt. - Remove any extra text and save
2646460as the only line. - Start the server again and recheck
WS/Saved/Logs/WS.log.
Linux installations
A Linux support report describes the same remedy in WS/Binaries/Linux/steam_appid.txt. This is a community-reported fix rather than a guarantee of universal Linux support, so verify the path against the executable you actually run. After creating the file, restart the server and look for [AppId: 2646460] ... initialized 1.
If the log still shows App ID 0, preserve the surrounding log lines. The remaining possibilities include unavailable Steam runtime files, a conflicting Steam client process, or an installation that is not the build your script expects.
Fix an executable that closes immediately
When WSServer.exe flashes and disappears, Steam networking is not yet the primary suspect. First prove that the script reaches the current server executable.
Verify the working directory and executable
- Open the dedicated-server installation directory manually.
- Confirm that the current
WSServerexecutable exists in the expected binaries tree. - Run the startup batch file or service from that installation directory, not from an old shortcut or a different folder.
- Check that the map name in the script is valid and that its path has not changed.
- Run again and capture both the console output and the newest section of
WS.log.
A Steam support discussion describes an update leaving a login script pointed at an old directory. The result can look like a Steam failure even though the actual problem is that the script launches stale or missing files.

Check installation files and Windows DLLs
Make sure the server update completed and that antivirus software has not quarantined a binary. Windows community reports have identified missing Steam runtime files in the server binaries directory, including steamclient64.dll, tier0_s64.dll, vstdlib_s64.dll, and crashhandler64.dll. Treat copying these files from an installed Steam directory as a reported workaround for the exact build involved, not as a universal repair:
- Back up the server directory first.
- Use files matching the server’s architecture and current build.
- Do not overwrite files blindly after every update; recheck the log and installation integrity.
- If Windows reports a different missing DLL or runtime, fix that named dependency rather than guessing.
Check the ports the server is actually configured to use
The Soulmask FAQ lists default UDP ports of 8777 for game traffic and 27015 for query traffic. Launch parameters can change both values. Always inspect the batch file, service definition, or control-panel settings and troubleshoot those actual values instead of assuming the defaults.
Port checklist
- Confirm that no other process already owns the configured game or query port.
- Allow the server executable and both configured UDP ports through the host firewall.
- If the host is behind a router, forward the same UDP ports to its fixed local-network address.
- Connect using the correct public address from outside the LAN, or the correct private address when testing inside it.
- Make sure the ports forwarded in the router exactly match the ports in the launch command.
A healthy process with an empty in-game list usually indicates blocked query traffic or missing NAT forwarding rather than a launch failure. Port forwarding cannot repair an App ID 0 error, and a successful Steam initialization does not automatically open a router firewall.
Separate “server is running” from “server is visible”
Use three observations together: the process list, the console, and WS.log. If the process remains active, the log reaches Steam networking initialization, and an invitation code is printed, the program has launched even if the browser is empty. At that point, investigate query-port rules, NAT, firewall profiles, and whether the client is searching the same region or address you configured.
If the process is absent and the log stops before Steam initialization, return to executable paths, permissions, missing files, and dependencies. If the process is present but repeatedly logs initialization failures, repair the App ID file and runtime layout before changing network settings.
Synchronize the client and dedicated-server builds
When a server worked before a patch and nobody can join afterward, update the dedicated server through SteamCMD or your hosting control panel, then update and restart every client. Hosting documentation identifies build mismatch as a common connection failure.

- Stop the server cleanly.
- Run the dedicated-server update procedure used by your installation.
- Check that the startup script now points to the updated directory and executable.
- Start the server and record the new startup log.
- Update the game client and restart it before attempting to connect.
A stale script can make an installation appear updated while it continues launching an older executable. Confirm the path in the script, not just the timestamp of a separate download directory.
Check host capacity and storage
Steam lists these baseline requirements for a 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 host:

These are baseline game requirements, not a promise that a busy multiplayer server will perform well at the minimum. If the server starts and then crashes, monitor memory consumption and free disk space while retaining the crash-time log. A port change will not solve a process that is exhausting memory or failing to write its files.
A stage-by-stage decision path
Work from the earliest confirmed stage to the latest. This prevents a visibility symptom from sending you back to the executable, or a launch failure from sending you into router settings.
- Confirm a process exists. If no process appears, run the current executable from the current installation directory and look for a Windows error, missing file, permission issue, or invalid map path.
- Confirm the log is being written. A new timestamp and fresh lines in
WS.logprove that the script reached the server. If the expected log never changes, check whether the script points to a different installation. - Confirm Steam’s App ID. The target is
2646460with initialization value1. App ID0is an initialization problem, not a browser problem. - Confirm networking. Once Steam networking initializes and the process stays alive, check the configured game and query UDP ports, firewall, NAT, and the address used by the client.
- Confirm versions. After a patch, update both server and client and verify that the launch script did not retain an old directory.
- Confirm capacity. If crashes occur only after players connect, compare memory use and available disk space with the baseline requirements rather than changing ports at random.
Make one change at a time and restart before reading the log again. Changing the App ID file, copying DLLs, changing ports, and replacing the script in one pass makes it difficult to identify which action helped or introduced a new problem.
Common pitfalls that make diagnosis harder
- Editing the wrong file: there may be more than one server folder after an update. Edit the binaries directory used by the executable that the script actually launches.
- Forwarding defaults when custom ports are configured: a router rule for 8777 and 27015 does nothing if the launch parameters use different values.
- Testing only from inside the LAN: local clients may use a private address while friends need the public address and router mapping.
- Assuming an empty browser means a crash: the process, log, Steam initialization line, and invitation code are stronger evidence.
- Copying old DLLs after every patch: community DLL remedies are build-specific reports. Back up first and verify the resulting log.
- Checking passwords before versions: a client/server build mismatch can prevent connection regardless of password settings.
- Running at the minimum forever: 16 GB RAM is a baseline, while 24 GB is the listed recommendation; a busy server may need headroom.

- Replace stale executable, map, and working-directory paths in the startup script.

Do not apply unrelated fixes simultaneously. Keeping one change at a time makes the next log meaningful and prevents a copied DLL, changed port, and new script path from hiding the original cause.
When self-hosting is the recurring problem
Self-hosting provides direct access to scripts, files, mods, and the operating system, but you must maintain SteamCMD/server builds, firewall rules, NAT forwarding, backups, and process restarts. Managed hosting generally abstracts the operating system and exposes configured ports, and some providers automate updates or restarts; the exact features vary.
Before moving, compare the provider’s current Soulmask support, player-slot limits, region, backup policy, mod support, update behavior, and cancellation terms. A managed plan can remove router work, but it cannot compensate for an unsupported game build or a client/server version mismatch.

What the price comparison should include
There is no universal hosting price that can be applied to every Soulmask plan. Compare the provider’s monthly charge with the included player slots, memory or CPU allocation, storage, backup frequency, region, and any fees for extra slots or transfers. A cheaper plan may still cost more in time if updates, restarts, backups, or port changes require manual support. Confirm whether the quoted price is recurring, whether cancellation takes effect immediately, and whether a backup can be downloaded before leaving. For self-hosting, include the cost of the machine, electricity, storage, internet service, and your own maintenance time rather than treating the software download as the entire budget.

Why does WSServer.exe close immediately?
That usually indicates a process-launch problem before Steam networking. What does AppId 0 mean in WS.log?
The line [AppId: 0] Game Server API initialized 0 indicates that Steam’s game-server API did not initialize. Check the binaries directory for steam_appid.txt containing only 2646460, restart the server, and compare the new log with the successful initialized 1 pattern.
