Sony’s FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G (SEL814G) switches from a circular fisheye image at 8 mm to diagonal fisheye coverage across the frame at 14 mm. That unusual range is the reason to want it—and the reason to ask whether a highly specialized lens is worth Sony’s announced US price of $1,599.99.
What the Sony 8-14mm fisheye does
This is a full-frame E-mount zoom for Sony Alpha cameras. Sony identifies it as its first full-frame E-mount fisheye zoom. Unlike a conventional ultra-wide zoom, it is designed to produce fisheye distortion throughout its range, while changing how that view fills the frame.
At 8 mm: a circular fisheye
At the widest setting, Sony specifies a 180-degree angle of view projected as a circle on a full-frame sensor. The result is a round image surrounded by unused portions of the frame, rather than a perspective that fills the rectangular image area.
At 14 mm: diagonal fisheye
At the long end, the lens gives a 180-degree diagonal angle of view across the frame. It remains a fisheye perspective, but the image fills the rectangular frame. The practical attraction is the ability to choose between the conspicuous circular look and a frame-filling fisheye without changing lenses.

What the specifications mean in practice
Sony lists a constant F3.5 maximum aperture over the 8–14 mm range. The focal length, aperture and framing change the composition, but this is not a lens that becomes slower as you zoom in.
| Specification | Sony’s stated value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mount and format | Full-frame E-mount | Designed for Sony Alpha E-mount cameras; the circular and diagonal descriptions above refer to full-frame coverage. |
| Focal length and aperture | 8–14 mm; constant F3.5 | Provides both fisheye coverage styles within one zoom range. |
| Minimum focus distance | 0.15 m | Allows close-focus compositions; Sony lists this as the minimum focusing distance. |
| Maximum magnification | 0.22× at the telephoto end | A useful close-up specification, but not a substitute for a dedicated macro lens. |
| Size and weight | Approximately 63.1 mm maximum diameter, 82.8 mm long and 314 g | Compact and light on paper for a lens offering this specialized range; actual handling depends on the camera body and rig. |
| Zoom mechanism | Internal zoom | Sony says this is intended to minimize center-of-gravity shifts as you zoom. |
These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Sony also describes an optical design using ED and aspherical elements to suppress chromatic and other aberrations. Its claims about resolution and aberration control should be understood as manufacturer claims rather than proof of how the lens performs in every scene.

Useful video controls, with a specialized production use
Sony lists autofocus, linear-response manual focus, reduced focus breathing and quiet operation, alongside a focus-mode switch, zoom-lock button and aperture ring that can be de-clicked. Those features may suit video work where smooth manual adjustments and reduced operating noise matter, but the claimed behavior has not been independently evaluated here.
Sony also describes a spatial-content setup using two VENICE Extension System Mini units with a dual-lens configuration. That is a specific two-system production arrangement; the lens by itself should not be treated as a spatial-content capture system.

The lens has dust- and moisture-resistant construction, according to Sony, but the company says it is not guaranteed to be completely dust- or moisture-proof. Resistance is not a promise of protection in every environment.
Is a fisheye zoom worth the price?
Sony Electronics announced a US MSRP of $1,599.99 and October 2026 availability. Its US product page currently lists the same price and shows “Out Of Stock”; stock can change, so check the page for current availability. Sony UK announced £1,500 and availability at the end of September 2026. These are region-specific announced prices, not interchangeable conversions or a guarantee of current retailer pricing.

The value question comes down to whether switching between circular and diagonal fisheye perspectives is useful often enough to justify the cost. If you need only one of those looks, the zoom’s defining flexibility may be less valuable to you. If you regularly want both, having them in one compact lens could make the specialization easier to use. That is a personal-use judgment, not an objective verdict on value.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Consider it if: both circular and frame-filling fisheye images are part of your work or creative plans, and you will use the lens often enough to justify a dedicated tool.
- Think carefully if: you want an everyday wide-angle lens, rarely use fisheye effects, or would be satisfied with only one of the two looks.
- For video: decide whether the listed manual-focus, aperture and operating features fit your workflow, rather than assuming specification claims guarantee a particular result.
What hands-on coverage says—and what it cannot establish
Digital Camera World’s September 8, 2026 hands-on review praised the lens’s small size, build, autofocus and flexibility, and said its optical performance exceeded the reviewer’s expectations for such an extreme design. The publication also characterized it as niche and a significant investment at the announced US price. Those are the reviewer’s impressions, not a controlled comparison or a substitute for results from your own camera and subjects.

Sony Vice President of Imaging Solutions Yang Cheng described the lens as running “circular through diagonal across 8 to 14 millimeters,” and said Sony aimed to maintain G Lens resolution across the range. That statement is promotional context from Sony, not independent validation.
