Sony will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. That is a major strategic bet on digital distribution, but it does not mean existing disc games will stop working or that games released before the cutoff will lose their disc editions. Calling the decision a “grave mistake” is an argument, not an established fact: digital purchases are already dominant by unit share, while physical games still matter to players who value resale, lending, collecting, or access that does not depend on an online storefront. Nintendo, meanwhile, has not made a verified commitment either to keep physical releases or to go all digital.
What Sony is changing in January 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment says physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. After that cutoff, new games will be sold digitally through PlayStation Store and at retailers. Sony says games that already released, or will release before January 2028, in disc format are unaffected by the transition. The announcement does not say that existing discs will stop working.
Sony’s stated rationale is that consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry are shifting away from physical discs. It also says it will continue to offer a choice of where players purchase new games, including retailers and PlayStation Store. That is a choice of sales channel, however, not a promise that a retailer will have a boxed disc to sell after the cutoff. Sony’s announcement describes the policy and its scope.
Digital sales are dominant, but the statistics measure different things
Sony reported an 82% full-game digital-download ratio for PS4 and PS5 in Q1 FY2026. The company defines this as digitally transacted full-game units divided by total full-game units. It is a measure of units, not proof that players in every market prefer digital, nor a direct measure of revenue. Sony’s FY2026 Q1 supplemental materials provide the metric and denominator.

A separate Sony measure shows why those percentages should not be conflated. In Sony Group’s FY2024 Game & Network Services revenue breakdown, physical software accounted for 3%, digital software for 20%, and add-on content for 29%. These are shares of revenue by source, not shares of game units. The figures show a business in which physical software is a small revenue category, but they do not establish how individual customers value discs or whether abandoning them is the best long-term strategy. Sony’s Corporate Report presents that revenue breakdown.
Electronic Arts offers another useful but different comparison: in its 2026 SEC filing, EA estimated that digital units made up 78% of its total game units sold on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5 in FY2025, compared with 73% in FY2024 and 68% in FY2023. EA’s estimate combines platform-reported digital units with estimates for packaged goods. It is a publisher-specific, multi-platform estimate—not a Sony-wide measurement. EA’s SEC filings describe the estimate and its method.

Why ending new discs could be a mistake
It removes practical options for players
A disc can be resold, lent, collected, or bought second-hand. Those options can matter to players who manage costs by trading games, share titles with friends or family, or prefer a physical collection. Digital storefronts may be convenient, but a digital purchase does not provide the same resale or lending route as a disc. The available sales figures do not quantify how many PlayStation customers rely on those options, so the scale of the impact remains uncertain.
Digital access depends on the storefront and account
Digital distribution makes buying and downloading straightforward, but access is mediated by an account and a platform’s storefront. A disc offers a different form of access: the player has a physical copy that can be used with compatible hardware, subject to the game and console’s requirements. The sources available for this policy do not establish what its long-term effects will be on access or preservation. Those are real considerations, but they should not be presented as outcomes Sony has already caused.

Retail availability is not the same as physical ownership
Sony says players will retain a choice between buying from retailers and PlayStation Store. Retail sales of digital codes or other digital offers can preserve the retailer as a point of purchase without preserving the boxed game, resale, or lending benefits of a disc. For players, the distinction is between choosing where to transact and choosing a physical format.
Why Sony may see the change as commercially rational
The 82% digital unit ratio indicates that full-game downloads already account for most reported PS4 and PS5 full-game units. Sony’s revenue mix also places physical software well below digital software and add-on content as a revenue source. These figures help explain why Sony might redirect resources away from disc production; they do not prove the change is harmless or that every customer wants it.

Sony also cites a broader shift toward digital entertainment and says it intends to invest in how players access games. From the company’s perspective, ending production of new discs may align manufacturing and distribution with prevailing sales patterns. The trade-off is that an aggregate sales trend can obscure the needs of players for whom physical formats are valuable, particularly if they have limited connectivity or rely on second-hand markets. The cited sources do not provide market-by-market data to measure those effects.
Will Nintendo go all digital too?
There is no confirmed basis here to say Nintendo will follow Sony’s policy—or to promise it will not. Nintendo’s official investor-relations hub is the route to its corporate policy and sales materials, but the available official material does not establish a near-term commitment to maintain physical releases or rule out an all-digital console. Nintendo’s investor-relations site is the official source for its published investor information.

My forecast is that Nintendo is unlikely to copy Sony’s exact move soon, but that is an inference rather than a stated Nintendo plan. Sony’s decision concerns future PlayStation disc production from January 2028; it does not by itself prove that another platform holder will make the same choice. A confident prediction about Nintendo’s hardware or media strategy would go beyond what the company has confirmed.
Quick Recap
What PlayStation owners should take from the announcement
- Disc releases already out, or scheduled before January 2028, are not covered by Sony’s announced cutoff.
- The cutoff concerns production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028; it is not an announcement that current discs will cease to function.
- Digital unit share, physical revenue share, and player preference are different measures. Sony’s 82% figure is a unit ratio, while the 3% physical-software figure is a share of FY2024 revenue.
- The strongest case against the change is about losing physical-format options such as resale, lending, and collecting. The strongest case for it is that digital downloads already dominate Sony’s reported full-game units.
