Google Pixel offers the longer, clearer Android-support promise. Pixel 8 and every newer generation are covered for seven years of operating-system and security updates, counted from first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Sony has narrowed the gap: the Xperia 10 VII is promised up to four Android-version upgrades and six years of security updates, while Sony lists security support for the Xperia 1 VII through 2031-04-01. For a phone you intend to keep five years or more, Pixel is the safer choice for guaranteed update longevity; Xperia remains compelling when its hardware priorities matter more and you choose a model with a long remaining support window.

At a glance: Pixel has the longer guaranteed runway

The answer depends on whether you mean major Android versions, security patches, or the amount of support still remaining when you buy. Google publishes a duration that starts at first US Google Store availability. Sony combines an upgrade promise for one model with fixed end dates in its support table. Those are different ways of expressing longevity, so compare them on the same basis before buying.

Phone or generation Operating-system update commitment Security-update commitment How the clock is defined
Pixel 8, Pixel 8a, Pixel 8 Pro and later Pixel generations Seven years Seven years From first availability on the Google Store in the US, according to Google Pixel Help
Pixel 6/6a/6 Pro, Pixel 7/7a/7 Pro and Pixel Fold Five years Five years From first availability on the Google Store in the US, under Google’s current policy
Xperia 10 VII Up to four Android-version upgrades Six years Sony’s 2025 announcement states the duration; Sony’s support table lists an end date of 2031-08-01
Xperia 1 VII Not stated in the cited support table Through 2031-04-01 End date shown in Sony’s 2026 support table
Xperia 1 VI Not stated in the cited support table Through 2028-04-01 End date shown in Sony’s 2026 support table
Xperia 10 VI Not stated in the cited support table Through 2028-05-01 End date shown in Sony’s 2026 support table

On the evidence available, Pixel wins both the length and simplicity of the guarantee for newer models. Xperia 10 VII is the strongest Sony case for long ownership, but its promise still separates major-version upgrades from security maintenance, and the exact remaining time depends on when you purchase.

How update clocks actually work

Google counts from first US Google Store availability

Google’s wording is precise: Pixel 8 and later phones receive updates for seven years starting when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. The five-year commitment for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families and Pixel Fold uses the same starting point. This is not a seven-year extension from the day you activate a handset. Buying a phone well after its release consumes part of the guaranteed period before it reaches your hands.

That starting rule lets you compare two phones bought on the same day without assuming they have equal time left. A recently launched model may have nearly its full term remaining; an older model sold from remaining inventory may have substantially less. Google’s policy covers both Android-version updates and security updates for the stated period, which removes the need to guess whether a phone will receive patches after its last major Android release.

Sony publishes a mixture of duration and end-date information

Sony’s Xperia 10 VII announcement says the phone supports six years of security updates and up to four OS version upgrades. The phrase “up to” matters: it describes the maximum number of upgrades in the commitment, not a promise that every owner will receive four releases on the same day. Sony’s support table supplies calendar end dates for individual models, which is more useful than a generic duration once a phone is already on sale.

An end date is a finish line, not a reset when you buy the handset. If a support table says 2031-04-01, a buyer in late 2026 has less than the full period from launch remaining. Check the exact model and regional listing before paying, because a family name alone does not tell you how much support is left.

Why “Android updates” can mean two different things

Major Android-version upgrades add platform features and can change system behavior. Security updates address newly discovered vulnerabilities and may continue after the final feature release. A phone can therefore have a longer security life than its major-version life. Google’s newer Pixel policy gives one number for both categories; Sony’s Xperia 10 VII announcement gives separate figures, so do not treat four OS upgrades as four years of security coverage or six years of Android-version upgrades.

Google Pixel support by generation

Pixel 8, 8a, 8 Pro and later

Pixel 8, Pixel 8a, Pixel 8 Pro and every later Pixel generation fall under Google’s seven-year policy. The commitment covers operating-system and security updates and begins at first US Google Store availability. That combination is the clearest answer for readers who want one phone to remain supported for a long ownership cycle.

Later generations inherit the policy category, but the calendar date still differs by model because each has its own first-availability date. When comparing, write down the exact model, find its first US Google Store availability date, and count seven years from that date. Do not substitute the date you bought it or the date a carrier activated it.

Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families, plus Pixel Fold

Pixel 6, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel Fold receive five years of operating-system and security updates from first US Google Store availability. That is a shorter guarantee than the Pixel 8 generation’s policy, but it can still cover a five-year ownership plan when the handset is purchased near the beginning of its support window.

For a late purchase, the remaining term is the deciding factor. A five-year policy does not mean five fresh years for a phone bought from old stock. Compare the model’s first-availability date with your intended replacement date, and leave room for the possibility that resale value and battery condition will end practical ownership before software support does.

Sony Xperia support by model

Xperia 10 VII

Sony announced the Xperia 10 VII in 2025 with up to four OS version upgrades and six years of security updates. Sony’s 2026 support table lists security updates through 2031-08-01. That makes it the Sony model in this comparison with the most explicit long-term security commitment and a stated multi-version upgrade ceiling.

The two figures answer different questions. Four upgrades indicate how many Android version transitions Sony commits to at most; the 2031-08-01 date indicates when security maintenance is scheduled to stop. If you keep phones for five years, check the purchase date against that endpoint rather than assuming the announcement’s full six-year period remains available.

Xperia 1 VII

Sony’s support table lists security updates for Xperia 1 VII through 2031-04-01. The cited table does not provide a comparable number of OS-version upgrades for this model, so treat the security end date as the firm longevity datum and verify the upgrade information for your market before buying.

As of 2026-10-16, 2031-04-01 is roughly four and a half years away. That is a substantial remaining security window, but it is still shorter than the seven-year guarantee attached to a newly available Pixel 8-or-later generation when both are measured from their respective starts.

Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI

Sony lists Xperia 1 VI security updates through 2028-04-01 and Xperia 10 VI through 2028-05-01. A buyer considering either model on 2026-10-16 would have about a year and a half of scheduled security support left, not a new multi-year term. These dates make both models poor fits for a five-year ownership plan unless your priorities outweigh software longevity and you accept an earlier unsupported period.

What a five-year owner should expect

Buying a current Pixel for a five-year plan

A Pixel 8-or-later model is designed around a seven-year support horizon, so a five-year owner has a two-year policy buffer if the phone is bought near the start of its availability. That buffer can absorb a later purchase, a delayed replacement, or a decision to keep the phone as a backup. The exact buffer depends on the model’s first US Google Store availability date, which you should record when comparing listings.

Buying Xperia 10 VII for five years

Xperia 10 VII’s six-year security commitment can accommodate five years of use when bought early enough in its support period. The four-upgrade ceiling means the phone may not receive as many major Android releases as a Pixel under Google’s seven-year OS policy. If security maintenance is your primary concern, the 2031-08-01 endpoint is the key number; if new Android features matter, ask the seller or Sony support how the upgrade schedule applies in your region.

Buying Xperia 1 VII for five years

The 2031-04-01 security endpoint can support a five-year plan for a purchase made in 2026, but the margin is narrower than a full seven-year Pixel commitment measured from a comparable starting point. Because the cited support table does not state an OS-upgrade count for Xperia 1 VII, buyers who prioritize major Android releases should treat that unanswered point as a decision check rather than infer it from another Xperia model.

Buying older Xperia VI models

The 2028 end dates for Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI leave too little runway for a handset purchased in late 2026 and held until 2031. You would reach the published security cutoff well before the five-year mark. A lower purchase price or preferred hardware does not change that calendar deadline.

Regional, carrier and software-delivery checks

Support policies are written for specific distribution channels and regions. Google’s seven- and five-year wording uses first US Google Store availability as its reference point; a carrier or another country’s store may use a different availability date. Sony’s table may identify a model by market or variant, and update delivery can depend on carrier approval.

  • Country or region where the handset will be activated.
  • Whether the seller is offering an unlocked device or a carrier version.
  • The manufacturer’s support page for that model and market.
  • The stated security end date and any separate OS-upgrade commitment.

These checks prevent a common mistake: applying a US Google Store policy to an imported unit or applying Xperia 10 VII’s announcement figures to a different Xperia generation.

Hardware reasons someone may still choose Xperia

Update duration is the clearest longevity axis, but it is not the only one. The right choice also depends on how you use the phone. The relevant hardware questions include camera controls, a headphone jack, storage expansion and display preferences. Sony’s Xperia line can be the better fit for a buyer who values one or more of those characteristics and accepts a shorter or less uniform software guarantee.

Evaluate those features as requirements rather than assumptions. Confirm the exact handset specification, because a desirable feature on one Xperia model does not establish that it appears on another. Likewise, do not assume every Pixel generation has identical cameras, display behavior or physical ports. A five-year phone is used daily; a hardware feature you rely on can outweigh an extra year of patches, while a feature you never use should not justify giving up a longer support window.

Camera-control priorities

If manual controls or a particular shooting workflow are central to your photography, compare the camera application and controls on the exact models. Software support keeps a phone safer, but it cannot add a preferred physical control layout or lens behavior after purchase.

Headphone and storage priorities

Readers who need wired headphones or expandable storage should verify those ports and slots before choosing on update policy alone. Treat them as pass/fail requirements: if a phone lacks a feature you cannot replace with an accessory, a longer support term may not make it usable for your routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Display preferences

Screen size, aspect ratio and viewing characteristics affect comfort for reading, gaming and video. Compare the panels in person or against the manufacturer’s specification for the exact model, then weigh that experience against the remaining support years.

A practical decision framework

  1. Set your replacement date. Decide whether you expect to keep the phone three, five or more years.
  2. Identify the exact model. Record the generation, variant and market before comparing policies.
  3. Find the support anchor. For Pixel, use first US Google Store availability; for Xperia, use Sony’s model-specific end date and any stated OS-upgrade count.
  4. Calculate remaining time. Subtract today’s date from the published endpoint or policy end date. Buying later always reduces the remaining window.
  5. Separate OS and security needs. Decide whether new Android versions or continued vulnerability fixes matter more to you.
  6. Check hardware deal-breakers. Confirm camera controls, headphone connectivity, storage expansion and display requirements on the exact device.
  7. Verify regional eligibility. Make sure the policy applies to the country and carrier version you will use.
  8. Choose the larger margin. If two phones meet your hardware needs, favor the one with more support remaining at your planned replacement date.

Which phone should you buy?

Choose Google Pixel when update certainty is the priority

Select a Pixel 8, Pixel 8a, Pixel 8 Pro or a later generation if you want the strongest published combination of OS and security longevity. The seven-year policy is easy to apply, and it is the best match for buyers who keep phones for five years, want a supported backup afterward, or prefer not to research a model-specific security cutoff.

Choose Xperia 10 VII when you want Sony hardware with a long security window

Xperia 10 VII is the Sony option to examine first for extended ownership. Its six-year security commitment and 2031-08-01 endpoint provide a clear planning date, while the up-to-four-upgrade promise sets expectations for major Android releases. Confirm regional terms and remaining time before purchase.

Choose Xperia 1 VII when its hardware justifies the trade-off

Xperia 1 VII can make sense when its camera, audio, storage or display characteristics are more important to you than matching Pixel’s update guarantee. Sony lists security support through 2031-04-01, which is a meaningful window for a 2026 buyer. Verify OS-upgrade coverage separately because the cited support table does not state a number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious with Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI in 2026

The April and May 2028 security endpoints leave limited time for a buyer starting in late 2026. Consider these models only if you have a shorter ownership plan and have confirmed that the remaining support period meets it.

What happens when updates end?

At the published security endpoint, the manufacturer no longer promises ongoing vulnerability fixes under that support commitment. The phone may continue to power on and run existing applications, but its risk profile changes as newly discovered flaws accumulate. Banking, work and password-management use deserves particular caution on an unsupported device.

If you keep a phone beyond its support date, reduce exposure: install applications only from trusted sources, use a strong screen lock, enable multifactor authentication, remove apps you no longer need and avoid sensitive transactions when the device cannot receive current security patches. Those practices reduce risk but do not extend the manufacturer’s support promise.

Bottom line for a long-term buyer

For guaranteed Android longevity, Google Pixel is the winner: Pixel 8 and newer models pair seven years of OS and security updates with a clearly defined starting rule. Sony Xperia 10 VII is the strongest Sony alternative, offering up to four OS upgrades, six years of security updates and a listed security endpoint of 2031-08-01. Xperia 1 VII remains viable through 2031-04-01 for security updates, while Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI reach their listed endpoints in 2028. Match those dates to your intended ownership period, then let hardware requirements decide between models that still have enough support remaining.
