Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy flagship phones offer the longest stated support in this comparison: about seven years for current flagship generations. Sony’s Xperia 1 VIII is reported at four major Android upgrades and six years of security updates, while individual Xperia models have different security end dates. Treat those figures as model- and region-specific commitments, not promises that apply to every phone sold by a brand.
What the update promises actually measure
“Seven years of updates” is useful only when you know what is included. Android manufacturers usually separate support into at least two tracks:
- Major Android-version upgrades: substantial operating-system releases that can change the interface, APIs, privacy controls and built-in features.
- Security updates: patches for vulnerabilities and other security maintenance. They may continue after major Android upgrades stop.
- Feature updates: Google uses the term “Feature Drops” for recurring additions delivered alongside or between Android releases.
A phone can therefore receive fewer Android upgrades than security years, or it can receive both for the same period. Compare the two numbers separately. A six-year security promise does not mean six new Android versions.

A commitment for a flagship cannot safely be transferred to a mid-range model with a similar name. |---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro | Included in a seven-year software-support commitment | Included in the same seven-year commitment | Google announced the policy in 2023 and explicitly included Android OS upgrades, security updates and regular Feature Drops. |

| Current flagship Samsung Galaxy S26 line | Reported at seven years | Reported at seven years | TechRadar reported seven years for the flagship Galaxy S26 line in 2026. Other Galaxy families may have different terms. |
| Sony Xperia 1 VIII | Four major Android upgrades | Six years | TechRadar reported these figures in 2026. They are shorter than the stated seven-year flagship commitments from Google and Samsung. |

| Sony Xperia 1 VI | Not stated in the supplied figures | Ends 2028-04-01 | Sony’s support table lists the security-update end date. |
| Sony Xperia 10 VI | Two versions after the policy change | Four years | TechRadar reported that Sony reduced the original three-version Android-upgrade promise to two because of storage limitations, while retaining four years of security updates. |
The table compares commitments that are not expressed in exactly the same way. Google’s seven-year Pixel 8 announcement combines operating-system upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops in one software-support period. Sony’s Xperia 1 VIII figures state four major upgrades and six security years separately. The practical winner depends on whether you value new Android versions, continued vulnerability patches, or both.
Google Pixel: the clearest seven-year commitment
What Google promised for Pixel 8
In 2023, Google announced seven years of software support for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The announcement specifically covered Android OS upgrades, security updates and regular Feature Drops. That wording is unusually clear because it identifies all three parts of the support package instead of leaving “updates” undefined.
For a Pixel 8 buyer, the seven-year period is tied to those named models and Google’s stated policy. It should not automatically be applied to older Pixels, cheaper variants or future generations without checking their own support documentation.
How to interpret later Pixel claims
TechRadar reported in 2026 that current flagship Pixel generations carry a seven-year update commitment. “Current flagship” is a category, not a substitute for a model number. A retailer listing, a carrier page and a manufacturer support page can describe the same phone differently, so use Google’s support information for the exact device and region.
Why Pixel may suit long-term Android users
- The policy states operating-system upgrades and security updates together, reducing ambiguity about what the seven years include.
- Feature Drops are explicitly part of Google’s Pixel support language, so the promise is broader than annual Android-version changes alone.
- Google’s own announcement provides a dated reference point: 2023 for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
The policy still does not guarantee that every update arrives on the same day in every country or through every carrier. Delivery timing is a separate question from the length of the commitment.
Samsung Galaxy: seven years for the current flagship line, not every Galaxy
The researched flagship position
TechRadar reported in 2026 that Samsung’s current flagship Galaxy S26 line has a seven-year update commitment. On the evidence available here, that places the named flagship family alongside current flagship Pixel phones for stated longevity.

Why the model check matters
“Galaxy” covers flagship, foldable, mid-range and entry-level families. A seven-year statement for the S26 line should not be read as a universal Galaxy policy. Before purchase, record the exact model, storage tier if it changes the model identifier, launch region and whether the phone is carrier-sold. Then verify the support term for that configuration.

What seven years does and does not tell you
The seven-year figure answers the duration question, but it does not by itself describe update timing. Samsung’s delivery can be affected by regional certification and carrier distribution, so a stated end date and the date a particular patch reaches your handset are different facts. If receiving an update immediately matters, investigate local rollout information in addition to the headline support period.
Sony Xperia: shorter flagship coverage and highly specific end dates
Xperia 1 VIII
TechRadar reported that Sony’s Xperia 1 VIII receives four major Android upgrades and six years of security updates. That is a substantial support period, but it trails the seven-year commitments reported for current flagship Pixel and Galaxy lines by one year of security coverage and by three major Android upgrades.
The distinction matters at the end of the phone’s life. After the fourth major Android upgrade, the Xperia 1 VIII can still receive security patches during the remaining security-support window. It should not be described as receiving six new Android versions.
Sony’s published security end dates
Sony’s support table gives model-specific security-update end dates. The listed dates are:
- Xperia 1 VII: security updates through 2031-04-01.
- Xperia 10 VII: security updates through 2031-08-01.
- Xperia 1 VI: security updates through 2028-04-01.
- Xperia 10 VI: security updates through 2028-05-01.
These dates are more useful than a general statement such as “Xperia gets several years of support.” They let you compare a phone’s remaining coverage with how long you expect to keep it. They are security end dates, not claims about the number of Android-version upgrades.

The Xperia 10 VI policy change
TechRadar reported in 2026 that Sony reduced the Xperia 10 VI’s Android-upgrade commitment from three versions to two because of storage limitations. The four-year security-update promise remained. Anyone who bought the phone based on the original three-version statement should treat the revised policy as the current one and retain purchase documentation if the change affects a return or warranty discussion.
This example shows why launch material should be rechecked. A phone can keep its security period while its major-version allowance changes, producing a different long-term experience from what an early announcement suggested.
Which brand wins on each definition of “longest”?
| Your definition of longest support | Best-supported choice from the evidence | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Most years with both Android upgrades and security updates stated together | Google Pixel 8/8 Pro and current flagship Pixel; current flagship Galaxy S26 line | Each is reported with a seven-year flagship commitment. Pixel 8/8 Pro’s 2023 announcement explicitly includes both categories. |
| Most major Android-version upgrades among the named examples | Pixel and current flagship Galaxy commitments, subject to exact-model confirmation | The researched flagship figure is seven years, while Xperia 1 VIII is four major upgrades. The source does not provide a separate upgrade count for every Pixel or Galaxy model. |
| Longest Sony security window in the listed models | Xperia 10 VII by calendar end date | Sony lists 2031-08-01, later than Xperia 1 VII’s 2031-04-01 and the VI-series dates. |
| Most predictable published Sony end date | The exact Xperia model shown in Sony’s support table | Sony publishes model-specific dates rather than one blanket Xperia deadline. |
On the broad flagship question, Pixel and Galaxy tie on the stated seven-year duration. On the Sony-only question, you must compare the model’s published end date; the Xperia 10 VII’s listed security date is later than the Xperia 1 VII’s, even though the model families serve different markets.
How to verify a phone’s real support before buying
Use this checklist whenever a product page advertises a number of years:
- Write down the exact model. Include the series number, generation and any regional designation. “Pixel,” “Galaxy” and “Xperia” alone are not sufficient.
- Separate the two promises. Find one statement for major Android upgrades and another for security updates. If the wording says only “software support,” look for the detailed definition.
- Find the support start point. A period can be measured from launch, first sale or another date. Do not compare a newly launched phone and an older model only by their eventual calendar end dates.
- Check your market. Confirm the country, carrier and unlocked-versus-carrier edition. Support terms can vary by geography, carrier and launch date.
- Look for a revision notice. The Xperia 10 VI change demonstrates that a launch promise can be revised. Check the current manufacturer page rather than relying on an archived retailer description.
- Record the end date. Save a screenshot or note of the manufacturer’s support-table entry, especially if you plan to keep the phone beyond a normal two- or three-year upgrade cycle.
- Ask what happens after major upgrades stop. A model may continue receiving security patches, but the duration and cadence must be stated separately.
Update length versus update delivery
A long commitment is valuable only while patches reach the device. Duration and delivery reliability should therefore be judged separately.
Duration
Duration is the published number of years or the explicit end date. It is the easiest metric to compare and the one most often shown in a specification sheet. The seven-year Pixel and Galaxy figures and Sony’s dated Xperia entries belong here.
Scope
Scope identifies what arrives during that period: Android-version upgrades, security patches, Feature Drops or some combination. Google’s Pixel 8 announcement names all three. Sony’s Xperia 1 VIII figures distinguish four major upgrades from six security years.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Timing
Timing is when your handset actually receives a release. Regional testing, carrier approval and staged distribution can make delivery later than the first announcement. The supplied evidence does not establish a universal day-by-day ranking for Sony, Pixel and Galaxy, so do not infer one from the length figures alone.
Consistency
Consistency means whether the same policy applies across a manufacturer’s entire catalog. The evidence supports model-specific conclusions, not a blanket claim that every phone under one brand receives the flagship term. A cheaper or older model can have a different upgrade count or security end date.

Keeping a phone for two to three years
All of the named models can exceed this ownership horizon if they are purchased while their support windows are active. The important checks are the phone’s remaining support, not just the original advertised duration, and whether the current Android version meets your application requirements.
Keeping a phone for four to five years
The flagship Pixel and Galaxy commitments provide the clearest margin because seven years are stated for the relevant generations. Xperia 1 VIII’s four major upgrades and six security years can also cover this period, but the Android-upgrade allowance is lower. For older Xperia VI models, use Sony’s calendar end dates to calculate the support remaining at purchase.

A seven-year flagship commitment is the strongest fit among the researched options. Xperia 1 VIII’s six security years may leave a final year without the stated security coverage if you buy at launch and keep it for the full seven-year span. For any Xperia, compare your planned replacement date with Sony’s exact end date; the difference between Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 10 VII shows why a model-level check is necessary.

Common mistakes when comparing update policies
- Adding the numbers together: Four Android upgrades plus six security years does not equal ten years of full operating-system support.
- Counting Android versions instead of support years: A seven-year policy and seven Android upgrades are not automatically the same unless the manufacturer says so.
- Applying a flagship promise to every model: Current flagship Pixel and Galaxy figures do not establish identical terms for their mid-range families.
- Ignoring the purchase date: An older phone may have fewer years left even when its original launch promise sounded long.
- Trusting an early announcement forever: The Xperia 10 VI revision shows that a stated upgrade count can change.
- Confusing an end date with guaranteed delivery speed: A support table tells you how long coverage is planned, not exactly when each patch appears on your handset.
- Using a global claim for a regional purchase: Geography, carrier and launch date can affect the applicable terms.
Practical buying decision
Choose a current flagship Pixel when clarity is your priority
Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have Google’s explicit 2023 seven-year statement covering Android OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops. A current flagship Pixel is the most straightforward choice when you want one clearly defined software-support package, provided the exact generation’s support page matches your region.
Choose a current flagship Galaxy when you want the same headline duration
The Galaxy S26 flagship line is reported at seven years by TechRadar in 2026. Verify that the handset is an S26-line flagship and not another Galaxy family before treating the seven-year figure as applicable.
Choose Xperia when a specific model’s hardware or date fits your plan
Xperia 1 VIII offers four major Android upgrades and six security years, while Sony’s support table gives concrete end dates for several Xperia generations. Xperia can make sense when those terms cover your intended ownership period, but it is not the longest-support option on the stated flagship figures.

The Xperia 10 VI’s change from three to two Android upgrades illustrates the risk of buying from an early specification sheet. If major Android versions are important, confirm the current commitment before paying and compare it with the security period separately.
Bottom line for this comparison
For the flagship generations covered here, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy are tied for the longest stated support at about seven years. Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro announcement is especially explicit because it includes Android OS upgrades, security updates and Feature Drops. Sony Xperia 1 VIII is reported at four major Android upgrades and six security years, so it trails those flagship commitments on longevity. Sony’s own date table remains essential for older or mid-range Xperia phones: the listed security end dates range from 2028 for the VI models to 2031 for the VII models. Buy on the exact model’s documented terms, not on the brand name alone.
