The Sony WH-CH530 is the more capable of these two budget headphones, with Bluetooth 6.0, support for the LC3 codec and a manufacturer-rated 55 hours of continuous music playback. The older WH-CH520 remains a sensible value choice if it is substantially cheaper, because it still offers multipoint pairing, USB-C charging, up to 50 hours of advertised battery life and the same basic closed-back, on-ear design with 30 mm drivers.
Neither headset has active noise cancellation or a wired audio input, so buyers who need either feature should look at a different class of headphones.

Battery figures are manufacturer maximums measured under stated conditions, not independently tested runtimes. The communication figures should not be compared directly with music playback figures because calls and music place different demands on a headset.
Battery life and charging
WH-CH530: a claimed 55 hours for music
Sony’s 2026 specification for the WH-CH530 lists approximately three hours for a full charge, up to 55 hours of continuous music playback and up to 35 hours of continuous communication. That gives the newer model a five-hour advantage over the WH-CH520’s advertised music maximum, although actual endurance varies with volume, codec, call use and other operating conditions.

WH-CH520: still long-lasting
Sony advertises up to 50 hours of battery life for the WH-CH520 and lists USB-C quick charging. Its specification gives approximately three hours for charging and up to 40 hours of communication time. If your use is mainly music and the WH-CH520 costs considerably less, its battery claim remains competitive.
Bluetooth, codecs and multipoint
What Bluetooth 6.0 changes
The WH-CH530 uses Bluetooth 6.0 and adds LC3 to the SBC and AAC codecs. LC3 is the significant platform addition: it is designed for newer Bluetooth audio implementations and gives the WH-CH530 a more current wireless foundation. The headset still supports SBC and AAC, so ordinary phone, tablet and laptop playback does not require an LC3-capable source.
What the WH-CH520 still covers
The WH-CH520 uses Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC and AAC. Those codecs cover the normal Bluetooth profiles used by most phones and computers. Bluetooth 5.2 is older than the WH-CH530’s 6.0 implementation, but the generation number alone does not guarantee a dramatic change in sound quality or range for every device.

Multipoint on both models
Both headphones support connection to two Bluetooth devices. Sony lists multipoint for the WH-CH530; the WH-CH520 product information says it can pair with two devices simultaneously. This is useful when, for example, you want to remain connected to a laptop and a phone and switch between them without repeatedly opening Bluetooth settings.
Design, fit and noise control
Shared on-ear construction
Sony lists both models as closed-back, on-ear headphones with 30 mm drivers. Their compact on-ear format is lighter and less bulky than many over-ear designs, but the ear cushions rest on the ears rather than surrounding them. Comfort therefore depends heavily on head size, clamp and personal tolerance for on-ear pressure.
Small weight difference
The WH-CH530 weighs approximately 150 g, while the WH-CH520 weighs approximately 147 g. A three-gram difference is unlikely to determine comfort by itself; cushion shape and fit are more meaningful factors for most users.

No active noise cancellation
Neither model provides active noise cancellation. WH-CH520 information also does not list an ambient-sound mode, and the WH-CH530 specification does not list ANC. Their closed-back construction may reduce some external sound, but it is not a substitute for electronic noise cancellation on aircraft, trains or busy streets.

No wired listening option is established
The supplied specifications do not list a wired audio input for either headset. Treat both as Bluetooth-focused models rather than choosing them for a 3.5 mm cable connection.

What Hi-Fi?’s comparison, published 14 October 2026, describes the WH-CH530 as delivering a “well-balanced, expressive and surprisingly enjoyable” sound for its price. That is an attributed editorial listening assessment, not a laboratory frequency-response measurement and not a guarantee that every listener will hear a large improvement over the WH-CH520.

The documented upgrade is clearest in wireless capability and battery claims: Bluetooth 6.0, LC3 support and up to 55 hours of music playback. Sony does not establish a new driver size—the two models both use 30 mm drivers—so do not assume that the newer model automatically provides a fundamentally different sound signature.
Which model should you buy?
Choose the WH-CH530 when:
- You want the newer Bluetooth 6.0 platform and LC3 support.
- You value Sony’s higher 55-hour continuous-music maximum.
- You are buying new and the price difference is modest.
- You prefer the newest model and expect to keep it for several years.
Choose the WH-CH520 when:
- It is materially cheaper than the WH-CH530.
- You only need Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC and AAC.
- You want multipoint pairing and long battery life without paying for newer wireless features.
- You are satisfied with the same basic 30 mm, closed-back, on-ear format.
Look elsewhere when:
- Active noise cancellation is essential.
- You require a wired input for an airplane entertainment system, amplifier or low-latency cable use.
- You need an over-ear seal rather than an on-ear fit.
Price and availability
Street prices and stock change by country, retailer and date, and no fixed current price is established here. Check the exact model number, regional availability and return policy at the time of purchase. The practical rule is simple: buy the WH-CH530 when its premium is reasonable for Bluetooth 6.0, LC3 and the longer music claim; buy the WH-CH520 when the discount is large enough that those additions do not justify the extra cost.
