Short answer: Sony’s WH-CH720N is the lighter, longer-running, lower-tier noise-cancelling headset, while the WH-1000XM6 is the current premium model with broader Bluetooth codec support, a carrying case and more advanced noise-control features. Sony rates the CH720N at approximately 192 g and up to 35 hours of playback with noise cancelling enabled. The XM6 is approximately 8.96 oz (about 254 g) and rated for up to 30 hours with noise cancelling enabled. Both support ambient sound modes, wired listening and multipoint connections.
“WH-1000XM headphones” is a family name, not one model. This comparison uses the current WH-1000XM6 as the premium example. Sony also lists the WH-1000XM5, and older XM generations can have different specifications, accessories and controls. Always check the full model number before comparing a retailer’s price or specifications.
At a glance: WH-CH720N versus WH-1000XM6

What the model names mean
WH-1000XM6 is the specific premium model here
The “1000XM” label covers several generations. The current comparison model is the WH-1000XM6. Sony’s US catalog has also listed the WH-1000XM5 as a separate product, so an XM5 listing is not automatically an XM6 listing. Older XM headphones may differ in battery ratings, codecs, microphones, folding design, case and software support.

When buying or comparing prices, check the complete model number on the retailer or Sony product page. A listing that says only “WH-1000XM” is incomplete for a specification-level comparison. Product names can also be shortened in search results, marketplace titles or used-product listings, making the suffix especially important.
WH-CH720N is a separate, lighter series
The WH-CH720N is not an entry-level version of the XM6 with identical hardware. It is a different wireless noise-cancelling headband model, positioned below the 1000X line. Sony describes it as “Sony’s lightest Wireless Noise-canceling headband ever.” That is Sony’s product positioning, not an independent comfort test.
Weight and day-long wear
Sony lists the CH720N at approximately 192 g, with 192.78 g also displayed on its specification page. The XM6 is listed at approximately 8.96 oz, which is about 254 g. That is roughly a 62 g difference before considering fit, hair, glasses or how tightly a particular unit clamps.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For commuting, study sessions and long office calls, the CH720N’s lower listed mass can be a decisive practical benefit. It may also be preferable if you dislike a heavier headset on your head or neck. The XM6’s extra mass does not by itself prove that it is uncomfortable; comfort depends on pad shape, headband pressure and individual fit, none of which can be established from the specification pages alone.
Weight is only one part of wearability. A lighter model can still feel wrong if its earcups or headband do not suit you, while a heavier model can be acceptable if its fit distributes pressure well. If possible, try each headset with your usual glasses and hairstyle, and check the retailer’s return terms before treating comfort as settled.
Battery life: the CH720N has the longer rating
Noise cancelling enabled
Sony rates the CH720N for up to 35 hours of music playback with noise cancelling on. The XM6 is rated for up to 30 hours in the same broad condition. Those are manufacturer maximums, not a promise that every listener will reach them.
Noise cancelling disabled
With noise cancelling off, Sony lists up to 50 hours for the CH720N and up to 40 hours for the XM6. If you regularly travel without ANC or use the headset for long stretches between charges, the CH720N’s stated endurance is the stronger specification.

Why your result can differ
- Higher volume generally uses more power.
- Voice calls, microphones and other processing can reduce music-playback time.
- Codec selection, ambient-sound processing and software settings affect consumption.
- Battery capacity and performance decline with age and vary with temperature.
Use the ratings to compare the models, not to predict an exact number of hours for your own routine. A person who leaves ambient processing active, takes frequent calls or uses a different codec may see a different result from Sony’s music-playback maximum.
Bluetooth codecs and what the XM6 adds
WH-CH720N: SBC and AAC
Sony lists SBC and AAC for the CH720N. These are widely supported by phones, tablets and computers, so basic compatibility is straightforward. The source device and operating system still determine which codec is actually used.
WH-1000XM6: SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3
The XM6 adds LDAC and LC3 to the SBC and AAC options. LDAC can carry more audio data than basic Bluetooth codecs when the source device supports it and the connection remains stable. LC3 is associated with newer Bluetooth LE Audio implementations, but availability depends on the transmitting device, operating-system support and Sony’s firmware behavior.
A larger codec list is not a guarantee of better sound. To benefit from LDAC or LC3, you need a compatible source and the relevant setting enabled; otherwise the connection may use SBC or AAC. Codec support also does not replace the importance of mastering, transducer tuning, fit or the quality of the recording.

What to check on your devices
Before paying more for the XM6 specifically for codecs, inspect the Bluetooth and audio settings on the phone, tablet or computer you actually use. Confirm that the device supports the desired format and that its operating system exposes a setting for it. A headset cannot add a codec that the transmitting device does not provide. If your equipment uses only SBC or AAC, the XM6’s additional codec entries may have little practical value for you.
Noise cancelling and ambient modes
What both models provide
Both headphones list an ambient-sound mode, allowing outside sound to be mixed in instead of isolating you completely. Both also support multipoint, so these are not Bluetooth-only music devices with no call or office features.
CH720N controls and app features
Sony’s CH720N product information describes dual noise sensors, adjustable ambient-sound settings in the Sony | Sound Connect app and Adaptive Sound Control. These features let you alter how much outside sound is admitted and automate behavior based on recognized situations or locations.

XM6 noise-control features
The XM6 specification lists Ambient Sound and an Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimizer. Sony’s published specifications identify supported modes, but they do not establish a quantified, independently controlled advantage over the CH720N in noise reduction or sound quality. Do not treat the XM6’s premium position as proof of a particular decibel improvement.
For safety, ambient mode is useful when you need awareness of announcements, conversations or nearby activity, but the specification pages do not say how natural either model sounds in every environment. Treat the mode names as capabilities, not a guarantee of identical results in a busy station, office or street.
Multipoint: can either headset connect to two devices?
Yes. Sony’s WH-CH720N product FAQ says it supports multipoint connection to two devices, and multipoint is also listed for the XM6. In a typical setup, you can keep the headset connected to a phone and a laptop, then switch between music on one and a call or video on the other.
Typical CH720N setup
- Pair the CH720N with the first device using the Bluetooth settings.
- Open the Sony | Sound Connect app and select the headset.
- Use the app’s connection or multipoint option to add a second device.
- Pair the second device when the app prompts you, then confirm both devices show as connected.
Menu names can vary by app version and operating system. If the second device will not connect, disconnect the headset from an unused device, turn Bluetooth off and on for the source, and repeat pairing. Multipoint does not mean two simultaneous music streams; the headset normally prioritizes the active audio or call.
Multipoint is therefore a convenience feature, not a promise that every app will switch instantly or that both sources can play at once. If your work setup depends on reliable switching, test the phone-and-computer combination you use most often.
Wired listening and what is in the box
Both models list a stereo mini-jack and passive operation, so you can connect a cable to a compatible source when Bluetooth is unavailable or not permitted. Both specifications list a connection cable and USB cable.
Sony explicitly lists a carrying case with the XM6. The CH720N specification contents do not list a case. If you commute with the headset in a bag, include the cost and convenience of obtaining protection when comparing the models.

Passive wired operation is not the same as every wireless feature remaining active over the cable. Noise cancelling, equalization and app controls can depend on power and connection mode; check the manual for the behavior you need before relying on the cable during travel.
Also inspect the contents for the exact regional SKU you are buying. Sony’s pages can vary by market, and a retailer may describe accessories differently from another listing. Do not assume that a case, cable or other item is included unless it appears in the applicable product contents.

Is the WH-1000XM6 worth the extra cost?
There is no durable price answer because Sony and retailers change prices and promotions, and regional prices differ. The XM6 makes the strongest case for its premium when you will use its additional listed codecs, want the included carrying case or specifically value its Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimizer. The CH720N makes the stronger value case when lower weight and longer rated battery life matter more than those additions.
Compare the live prices for the exact XM6 and CH720N listings in your market, then account for any case you would buy separately for the CH720N. Avoid comparing an XM6 sale price with a full-price CH720N, or vice versa. The price gap can change, while the specification differences above remain the useful starting point.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the WH-CH720N when these priorities lead
- You want the lighter headset: approximately 192 g versus the XM6’s approximately 254 g.
- You prioritize the longest stated battery life, especially up to 35 hours with ANC on or up to 50 hours with ANC off.
- Your phone and computer use SBC or AAC and you do not need LDAC or LC3.
- You want ambient sound, Adaptive Sound Control and multipoint without moving to Sony’s premium model.
- You are comfortable arranging your own protection because a carrying case is not listed in Sony’s contents for this model.
- You are comparing current prices and the CH720N leaves more of your budget for another accessory or simply costs less in the offers you can find.
Choose the WH-1000XM6 when these priorities lead
- You need LDAC or LC3 support and have a compatible source device.
- You want the carrying case included in Sony’s listed box contents.
- You value the XM6’s listed Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimizer and premium-line feature set, while understanding that the published specifications do not quantify a head-to-head ANC advantage.
- You want Bluetooth 5.3 rather than Bluetooth 5.2, although the version number alone does not establish a listening benefit.
- You accept the higher listed weight and shorter manufacturer-rated battery life in exchange for those features.
- The current price difference is acceptable to you after checking the exact model, region and included accessories.
When neither specification settles the decision
Sound signature, clamp, pad comfort, microphone behavior and actual noise reduction are personal or test-dependent variables. Sony’s specification pages do not provide an independent controlled comparison of those areas. If those are your deciding factors, try both with your own phone, glasses and typical music before purchasing, and verify the return policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a listing before you buy
- Verify the exact model. Look for “WH-CH720N” or “WH-1000XM6,” not a shortened “1000XM” label.
- Check the market. Sony notes can differ by region, so use the specification page for the country where you will buy and use the headset.
- Confirm codec needs. Check whether your phone, tablet or computer supports LDAC or LC3 and whether its settings permit that codec.
- Inspect the listed contents. The XM6 includes a case in Sony’s specification list; the CH720N list includes cables but does not list a case.
- Compare current pricing separately. Prices and promotions change, and a durable specification comparison cannot establish a live price or value calculation.
- Plan the connection. If you need two devices, confirm both are compatible with Bluetooth multipoint and expect one active audio stream at a time.
- Check the return policy. Comfort, clamp, microphone behavior and perceived noise reduction are not settled by the specification table, so a return option is valuable if you cannot try both first.
- Match the battery claim to your routine. Use the ANC-on figure if you normally leave noise cancelling enabled, and remember that calls, volume and settings can shorten the maximum.
Bottom line
The WH-CH720N is the practical choice for low weight and longer rated battery life: approximately 192 g, up to 35 hours with noise cancelling on and up to 50 hours with it off. The WH-1000XM6 is the feature-forward choice, adding LDAC and LC3, listing Bluetooth 5.3, providing a carrying case and including Sony’s Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimizer. Both offer ambient sound, wired passive listening and multipoint. Decide by the features you will actually use, compare current prices for the exact regional models, and name the XM generation whenever you compare prices or specifications.
