Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want Sony’s broad codec support, multipoint, and a quoted 30-hour noise-cancelling battery life. Choose Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if USB-C lossless audio, Cinema Mode, or Bose’s Immersive Audio features matter more. Choose the less-expensive Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) when you want the QuietComfort line’s new TrueSpatial modes without paying Ultra pricing. There is no reliable, controlled head-to-head test in the available official material that proves one is best for noise cancellation, sound quality, or comfort. Your decision should therefore start with the exact Bose tier and the features you will actually use.

Start by naming the exact models

“Bose QuietComfort” is not one headphone in this comparison. In 2026, the relevant products are the Sony WH-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). The base QuietComfort and Ultra are separate models with different features and launch prices. Treating them as interchangeable can lead you to expect a feature or price that belongs to another tier.

Sony WH-1000XM6

Sony’s current flagship in this comparison is the WH-1000XM6, an over-ear, closed-back wireless headphone. Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint pairing, and support for SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. Its published maximum continuous music playback is 30 hours with noise cancelling enabled or 40 hours with noise cancelling disabled. Sony specifies approximately 3.5 hours for a full charge and includes a carrying case, connection cable, and USB cable.

Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen)

Bose announced the second-generation QuietComfort Headphones on August 6, 2026. The U.S. launch price was $359, with preorders scheduled for August 8 and shipping scheduled to begin August 13. Bose added TrueSpatial listening modes called Still, Motion, and Cinema, and lists Bluetooth Core 5.4 multipoint connectivity. Bose’s comparison material also identifies USB-C audio for this generation.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)

The Ultra (2nd Gen) is Bose’s premium model, not another name for the base QuietComfort. Bose announced it on September 10, 2025, at a $449 launch price, with availability from October 2, 2025. Its feature set includes USB-C lossless audio, Cinema Mode, adaptive noise-cancelling updates, and Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint. Bose also publishes several battery figures that change according to whether Immersive Audio is active.

Price and availability: compare like with like

The Sony WH-1000XM6 appeared at $459.99 in the retrieved U.S. Sony store listing. That is higher than Bose’s $359 launch price for the base QuietComfort (2nd Gen) and slightly above the Ultra (2nd Gen)’s $449 launch price. These figures do not establish a permanent price ranking: retailer discounts, regional taxes, bundles, and stock levels can change the result.

Sony’s earlier WH-1000XM5 appeared at $198 in a retrieved U.S. product result. That may be a temporary promotion, so check the live listing before treating it as the normal price or assuming the older model is always the better value. If the XM5 is only modestly cheaper than the XM6, compare the remaining warranty, included accessories, and the features you would give up.

For Bose, keep the model name in your search or shopping cart. “QuietComfort” can return the base second-generation headphone, an earlier generation, or an Ultra product. Search for the full phrase “Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen)” or “Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)” and verify the generation on the product page.

Battery life and charging

Sony’s two stated endurance modes

Sony rates the WH-1000XM6 for up to 30 hours of continuous music with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with it off. The figures describe music playback, not a guaranteed duration for calls, high-volume listening, or every codec and environmental condition. Sony lists approximately 3.5 hours for a complete charge.

Bose Ultra’s mode-dependent results

Bose rates the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for up to 30 hours when noise cancelling is on and Immersive Audio is off. Activating both noise cancelling and Immersive Audio lowers the stated maximum to 23 hours. With both features off, Bose lists up to 45 hours. Bose also specifies that a 15-minute charge can provide up to 2.5 hours of playback under the noise-cancelling-on, Immersive-Audio-off condition.

Base QuietComfort battery information

Bose’s August 6, 2026 announcement for the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) did not state a runtime figure. Do not substitute the Ultra’s 30-, 23-, or 45-hour numbers for the base model.

How to use the figures when choosing

  • For predictable all-day listening with noise cancelling, Sony’s 30-hour claim and the Ultra’s 30-hour claim are the directly comparable headline numbers, but they were not measured in a shared test.
  • If you plan to leave Bose Immersive Audio on, use the Ultra’s 23-hour figure for planning rather than its 30-hour or 45-hour maximum.
  • If you rarely use noise cancelling, Sony’s 40-hour claim and the Ultra’s 45-hour claim describe their respective maximum modes, not a common real-world workload.
  • Do not use a battery number to infer sound quality, comfort, microphone performance, or charging speed for another model.

Connections, codecs, and device compatibility

When Sony’s codec list matters

WH-1000XM6 supports SBC and AAC for broad compatibility, plus LDAC and LC3. LDAC can be useful with compatible Android devices or other sources that expose the codec; LC3 depends on compatible Bluetooth LE Audio hardware and software. The presence of a codec does not guarantee that a phone, computer, or app will select it, so check the source device’s Bluetooth settings.

Sony lists multipoint, allowing the headphones to maintain connections with two devices. This is useful if you move between a laptop and phone, but the exact switching behavior can depend on the operating systems and the apps using the active audio connection.

What Bose lists

Bose lists Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint for both the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) and QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). Bose also identifies USB-C audio on the new base generation and USB-C lossless audio on the Ultra. A USB-C lossless feature is relevant only if your source, cable, operating system, and playback software support the required digital-audio path; it is not the same as every USB-C port automatically delivering lossless sound.

Bluetooth version numbers alone do not tell you which headphone will sound better. Check the devices you actually use, whether you need two-device switching, and whether you intend to listen over USB-C before making a choice.

Special features that separate the Bose tiers

TrueSpatial on the base QuietComfort (2nd Gen)

Bose says the second-generation QuietComfort adds TrueSpatial Technology with three Bose Immersive Audio listening modes: Still, Motion, and Cinema. Still is intended for a stationary listening experience, Motion is designed for movement, and Cinema targets a more theater-like presentation. Bose describes these as modes previously exclusive to the QuietComfort Ultra series.

These modes are processing options, not a promise that every listener will prefer the effect. Try them with familiar music or video and leave them off if they make voices, instruments, or positional cues less natural to you.

Ultra’s USB-C lossless audio and Cinema Mode

The Ultra (2nd Gen) adds USB-C lossless audio and Cinema Mode alongside its Immersive Audio functions. Those additions make the Ultra the clearest Bose choice for someone who wants a premium headphone that can be used as a digital USB-C audio device, provided the rest of the setup supports it.

Sony’s processor claim

Sony says, “The HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 is 7x faster than the QN1 (found in our WH-1000XM5 headphones), optimizing 12 microphones in real time—for better noise cancellation, sound quality, and call clarity.” This is Sony’s product-page claim. It explains what Sony says the processor and microphone system are designed to do; it is not an independent measurement proving that the XM6 outperforms either Bose model in every environment.

Noise cancellation, sound, and comfort: what can—and cannot—be concluded

All three headphones are designed for over-ear listening with active noise cancellation, but the official specifications and launch announcements do not provide a controlled, independent comparison of these exact current models. They do not establish a neutral winner for airplane noise, office voices, bass response, treble balance, microphone quality, clamping force, heat, or long-session comfort.

Fit is especially important. Ear shape, glasses, hair, head size, seal, and how the headband sits can change perceived bass and the amount of outside noise that reaches your ears. A headphone that measures well for one listener can feel uncomfortable or sound thin for another if the pads do not seal.

Use return rights and a familiar listening test when possible. Try spoken podcasts, quiet vocals, dense music, and a steady low-frequency sound such as an airplane or HVAC rumble. Test with your normal glasses, hat, and travel bag rather than judging only from a short showroom demonstration.

Which one should you buy?

Buy Sony WH-1000XM6 when you value codec flexibility

  • You want LDAC and LC3 in addition to SBC and AAC.
  • You regularly switch between a phone and computer and want multipoint.
  • You prefer Sony’s published 30-hour noise-cancelling or 40-hour noise-cancelling-off figures.
  • You want the newest Sony flagship rather than relying on a discounted previous generation.

The XM6 is the most feature-rich fit for a listener whose devices can use its codec options. Its $459.99 retrieved U.S. store price places it in the premium tier, so the extra cost makes the most sense when you will use the connectivity and processing features rather than simply wanting any wireless ANC headphone.

Buy Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) when you want the lower Bose tier with new spatial modes

  • You want Bose’s new TrueSpatial Still, Motion, and Cinema modes.
  • You prefer the base QuietComfort line to the Ultra’s premium feature set.
  • The $359 U.S. launch price, or a lower current street price, fits your budget.
  • You want Bluetooth 5.4 multipoint and the USB-C audio support Bose lists for this generation.

This model is the sensible Bose starting point when Ultra-specific features are not part of your requirements. Because Bose did not state a battery figure in the launch announcement, verify the current product specification before buying if runtime is a deciding factor.

Buy Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) when USB-C lossless and Immersive Audio matter

  • You specifically want USB-C lossless audio.
  • You will use Cinema Mode or other Immersive Audio processing.
  • You accept that Immersive Audio reduces Bose’s stated maximum runtime to 23 hours when noise cancelling is also on.
  • You want Bose’s premium tier and find a current price close to its $449 launch price.

The Ultra is not automatically the right choice merely because it is the more expensive Bose model. Its strongest justification is that you will use its USB-C and spatial-audio features.

Consider the WH-1000XM5 only as a price-led alternative

The XM5 can be compelling if the retrieved $198 U.S. listing remains available and the older model meets your needs. Confirm that the seller is reputable, check warranty coverage, and compare the XM5’s actual included accessories and firmware support with the XM6. A temporary discount should not be presented as a permanent specification of the older model.

A practical buying process

  1. Write down your source devices. List your phone, tablet, laptop, and any USB-C source. Check which Bluetooth codecs each one supports and whether you need two-device multipoint.
  2. Choose the Bose tier before comparing prices. Decide between QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) and QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). Do not compare a base-model sale with an Ultra feature list.
  3. Mark your must-have feature. Select LDAC or LC3, USB-C lossless audio, TrueSpatial modes, Cinema Mode, or the longest stated runtime. If none is essential, prioritize fit, return terms, and the price you can verify today.
  4. Compare battery figures with their conditions. Record whether each number assumes noise cancelling, Immersive Audio, or both disabled. For the Ultra, use 23 hours for an NC-on and Immersive-on plan.
  5. Check the current price and generation. Retail listings change. Confirm the exact model name, warranty, seller, color, and included case before paying.
  6. Plan a fit test. Use the return window to test comfort and seal for at least one extended session. Check with glasses and your normal listening volume.
  7. Evaluate ANC in your real environment. Test office voices, traffic, aircraft-like low-frequency noise, and wind. Do not treat a brand’s processor or microphone count as an independent performance score.

Common buying mistakes

  • Assuming every QuietComfort is an Ultra. TrueSpatial, USB-C lossless audio, Cinema Mode, and battery figures belong to specific generations and tiers.
  • Comparing launch prices with a temporary sale. The $359 base QuietComfort and $449 Ultra figures are announced launch prices; the $459.99 Sony figure came from a retrieved store result.
  • Reading maximum battery life as a universal promise. Bose’s Ultra numbers change substantially with Immersive Audio, and Sony’s figures distinguish noise cancelling on from off.
  • Declaring an ANC or sound-quality winner from specifications. Bluetooth version, processor claims, and microphone counts do not replace a controlled listening test.
  • Ignoring source compatibility. LDAC, LC3, or USB-C lossless audio only helps when the phone, computer, operating system, cable, and playback software support the relevant path.
  • Buying on a model number alone. Verify the generation and return policy, especially when a retailer lists several QuietComfort products together.

Bottom line

For the broadest published codec support and a straightforward flagship choice, buy the Sony WH-1000XM6. For Bose’s premium spatial and USB-C lossless features, choose the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). For a lower Bose tier with the new TrueSpatial modes, choose the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen). None can be declared the universal winner for ANC, sound, or comfort from official specifications alone, so use your device compatibility, must-have features, verified current price, and fit test to make the final decision.
