Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want longer advertised battery life, more listed Bluetooth codecs, and Sony’s app-based controls. Choose Apple’s AirPods Max 2 if you use Apple devices, want features such as Adaptive Audio and Personalized Spatial Audio, or need lossless, low-latency audio over USB-C.

Those are different strengths rather than a universal winner. Comfort, your phone and computer mix, and the price in your country can matter more than a specification. This comparison covers the current WH-1000XM6 and AirPods Max 2, not the older Lightning AirPods Max or the 2024 USB-C AirPods Max (first generation).

First, identify the exact AirPods Max generation

“AirPods Max” can refer to several products. Apple’s current specification page is for AirPods Max 2. Apple also maintains a separate page for the 2024 USB-C AirPods Max (first generation), while many older reviews cover the original 2020 Lightning model. A listing that says only “AirPods Max” is not specific enough for a fair comparison.

For this article, the two products are the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Apple AirPods Max 2. Do not use a review of the 2020 or 2024 first-generation model as if it were a direct test of Max 2. The housing, connector and feature set may differ, and the model name on a retailer page can be abbreviated.

Specifications that affect the decision

Decision factor Sony WH-1000XM6 Apple AirPods Max 2 What it means
Advertised battery with noise cancellation enabled Up to 30 hours Up to 20 hours Sony has the longer manufacturer-rated endurance. These are claims from each manufacturer, not a controlled head-to-head test.
Advertised battery with noise cancellation disabled Up to 40 hours Not stated in the current Max 2 specification cited here Sony publishes both modes; do not infer an Apple figure that Apple has not published on that page.
Bluetooth audio formats SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 Bluetooth 5.3 is listed; lossless and ultra-low-latency audio are specified over USB-C Sony lists Bluetooth codecs. Apple’s lossless claim is tied to a USB-C wired connection, not ordinary Bluetooth listening.
Weight Not stated in the Sony specification material used for this comparison 386.2 grams, including cushions Apple provides a precise Max 2 figure. A numeric Sony-versus-Apple weight difference is not established here.

Battery life: Sony wins the published endurance contest

Sony rates the WH-1000XM6 for up to 30 hours with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off. Those figures appear in Sony’s current WH-1000XM6 support specifications. They describe a maximum under Sony’s stated conditions; streaming volume, calls, temperature, codec choice and other use can reduce runtime.

Apple’s AirPods Max 2 technical specifications state: “Up to 20 hours of listening time on a single charge with Active Noise Cancellation enabled.” That is Apple’s manufacturer figure for the current model. It is not a laboratory comparison against the Sony claim, so treat the difference as an endurance advantage on paper rather than a promise of exactly 10 additional hours in your routine.

Who benefits from Sony’s longer rating?

  • Frequent flyers who may go several days between outlets.
  • People who leave ANC enabled during a long workday and commute.
  • Households that share a headset and want fewer charging reminders.
  • Travelers who prefer to disable ANC occasionally and use Sony’s published 40-hour mode.

When Apple’s 20-hour rating may be enough

Twenty hours with ANC enabled can cover several commutes or a normal workweek if you recharge regularly. The relevant question is not whether 20 hours is “good” in isolation, but whether your longest stretch away from a charger fits within it. If you routinely work through overnight flights or multi-day trips, Sony’s published margin reduces the need to manage charging.

Do not transfer test conditions from Apple’s separate 2024 USB-C AirPods Max (first-generation) page to Max 2. That page discusses pre-production units, 50-percent volume and ANC enabled; those details belong to that earlier product documentation, not to the Max 2 figure quoted above.

Bluetooth codecs versus USB-C lossless audio

The two companies describe connectivity in different ways. Sony lists SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 for the WH-1000XM6. This gives compatible devices several Bluetooth codec paths, including Sony’s higher-bandwidth LDAC and the newer LC3 format. The phone, computer and operating system must also support a codec before it can be used; a long list on the headset does not force every source device to select one.

Apple lists Bluetooth 5.3 for AirPods Max 2 and separately specifies lossless and ultra-low-latency audio via USB-C. That is a wired digital-audio feature. It should not be described as lossless Bluetooth, and it is not equivalent to Sony’s list of Bluetooth codecs.

Choose Sony when wireless codec flexibility matters

Sony’s published format list is useful if your devices include hardware that supports LDAC or LC3, or if you move between platforms and want a broader set of Bluetooth options. AAC and SBC remain relevant for devices that do not offer those newer paths. Check your source device’s audio settings before buying on the assumption that a particular codec will be active.

Choose AirPods Max 2 when USB-C wired listening matters

Max 2 is the more compelling choice for a listener who wants a USB-C connection for lossless playback or very low latency. This can matter for editing, monitoring, gaming or watching video where a wired path is preferable. Apple’s specification describes the feature; it does not mean every USB-C cable, application or device will provide the same behavior, so confirm compatibility with your equipment.

Apple ecosystem integration: a real advantage, with a clear boundary

Apple lists Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Personalized Spatial Audio among AirPods Max 2 features. For someone who uses Apple hardware as the primary phone, tablet and computer, those capabilities can be more valuable than a codec comparison. Independent comparison coverage has also treated automatic Apple-device switching and integration as a strength of the AirPods Max family, but one prominent test used the earlier AirPods Max generation rather than Max 2. Use that as family-level context, not as a measured Max 2 result.

Sony is the safer platform-neutral choice when your day includes a mixture of operating systems, game consoles or non-Apple computers. Its listed Bluetooth formats are not restricted to Apple hardware, and Sony provides app-based controls for adjusting the headset. The practical question is which device you will use most often and whether you will actually use Apple’s spatial and awareness features.

Questions to ask before choosing Max 2

  • Are your phone and computer both Apple devices, or will you regularly switch to Windows or Android hardware?
  • Do you want Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness or Personalized Spatial Audio specifically, rather than only basic ANC?
  • Will you use USB-C lossless or low-latency audio, or will nearly all listening be wireless?

Noise cancellation, sound and comfort are not universal winners

Comparative opinions vary with ear shape, glasses, head size, music genre, fit and the noise around you. A reviewer’s preferred tuning or ANC result is not a guarantee for your ears. Tom’s Guide published a seven-round comparison of the WH-1000XM6 with the earlier AirPods Max, so its subjective conclusions should not be presented as a direct Max 2 test. Cinco Días published a March 2026 comparison explicitly covering AirPods Max 2 and WH-1000XM6, but it remains one publication’s listening and evaluation context rather than a universal measurement.

Use those reviews to identify questions for your own trial: which tuning do you prefer, how well do voices and transport noise disappear, and does the clamp or cushion remain comfortable after an hour? If your seller permits returns, test both models with your usual phone, glasses and playlist. Do not select a headset solely because a review calls it the overall sound winner.

Fit matters more than a small specification advantage

A seal around the ears affects perceived bass and passive isolation. Glasses arms, hair and head shape can create gaps that change ANC performance. During a return-window test, listen at low and moderate volume, walk, speak briefly and wear the headset for at least an hour. Note pressure at the temples, heat around the cushions and whether the headband stays stable.

What the published weight tells you

Apple lists AirPods Max 2 at 386.2 grams including cushions. Sony’s official specification material used here does not establish a current WH-1000XM6 weight, so a precise numerical weight advantage cannot responsibly be claimed. If weight is a decisive issue, put both on your head rather than relying on a comparison chart that may mix generations or omit the cushions.

Price and value: use local, dated figures correctly

What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 coverage gives US$450 as list-price context for the WH-1000XM6 and US$549 for AirPods Max 2. Sony Australia announced an A$699.95 recommended retail price for the WH-1000XM6 in May 2025. Those figures establish launch or review context for specific markets and dates; they are not live worldwide prices, discounts or a prediction of what you will pay today.

Before deciding that one model is better value, compare the current price in your country, the seller’s return period and the exact generation. A discounted first-generation USB-C AirPods Max is not the same product as Max 2, and a sale price can reverse the value difference implied by list prices.

A practical value test

  1. Write down the price you can actually pay from an authorized or otherwise trusted local seller.
  2. Confirm that the listing says “WH-1000XM6” or “AirPods Max 2,” not simply “AirPods Max.”
  3. Decide whether you need USB-C lossless audio or Apple-specific features.
  4. Estimate how often you would charge the headset; Sony’s 30-hour ANC-on rating may matter more than a small purchase-price gap for heavy travelers.
  5. Check the return policy so you can evaluate comfort and fit with your own devices.

Which headset fits each type of buyer?

Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you are a frequent traveler

Sony’s manufacturer-rated 30 hours with ANC on gives you more stated endurance between charges than Apple’s 20-hour Max 2 rating. The 40-hour ANC-off figure adds another option for quieter environments. This recommendation is based on published battery specifications, not a controlled travel test.

Choose Sony if your devices use different platforms

The WH-1000XM6’s listed SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 support gives a mixed-device household more Bluetooth format options. Confirm which codecs your phone, tablet and computer support; compatibility remains a system-level decision.

Choose AirPods Max 2 if you are invested in Apple hardware

Max 2 concentrates Apple’s Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio and USB-C audio features in one headset. If those functions are part of your daily workflow and most of your devices are Apple products, that integration can outweigh Sony’s longer battery rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose AirPods Max 2 if USB-C lossless or low latency is a requirement

Apple explicitly specifies lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over USB-C. That is the clearest reason to select Max 2 for a wired digital-audio workflow. Do not buy it expecting that claim to describe Bluetooth playback.

Choose based on comfort when neither ecosystem dominates

If you use both Apple and non-Apple devices and do not need USB-C lossless audio, the decision becomes personal: fit, controls, sound preference, ANC behavior and local price. A returnable purchase and an extended listening trial are more informative than a reviewer’s single overall ranking.

A buying checklist that prevents generation and spec mistakes

  • Model name: verify WH-1000XM6 on the Sony side and AirPods Max 2 on the Apple side.
  • Connector: do not confuse Max 2 with the 2024 USB-C first-generation model or the 2020 Lightning model.
  • Battery claim: compare Sony’s “up to 30 hours with ANC on” with Apple’s “up to 20 hours with ANC enabled,” keeping the manufacturer qualification attached.
  • Audio path: treat Sony’s codec list and Apple’s USB-C lossless specification as different technologies.
  • Weight: record Apple’s 386.2-gram figure, but do not invent a Sony comparison from an unverified number.
  • Price: use a current local price, not the dated US or Australian reference figures alone.
  • Returns: confirm that you can test comfort, seal and controls before the return period expires.

Bottom line

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the practical default for longer advertised battery life, broad listed Bluetooth codec support and mixed-device flexibility. The AirPods Max 2 is the specialist choice for Apple-centric users who value Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio or USB-C lossless and low-latency audio. Verify the generation, check your local price and judge comfort on your own head before committing.
