The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the likely match for the headline’s “over 50% off” claim: WIRED reported it for $198 against a $400 reference price in the U.S. in September 2026, describing the Amazon and Sony prices as 51% off. That was a dated deal report, not confirmation of today’s price. Check the retailer’s current listing before buying.
What the reported Sony deal actually was
WIRED’s September 2, 2026, U.S. deal roundup listed the WH-1000XM5 at $198 on Amazon and Sony, each against a $400 reference price and described as 51% off. WIRED also listed the headphones at $198 at B&H Photo, describing that as 50% off. TechRadar separately reported a $198 Amazon price during its September 3 Labor Day sale coverage.
Those reports establish that the XM5 reached a deep discount in the U.S. in September; they do not establish that the price or discount is still available on October 13, 2026. Retail prices and stock can change, so verify the current price, seller, and checkout total. A retailer’s displayed percentage may also use a reference price that differs from the price you would otherwise pay.

XM5 and XM6: which one makes more sense?
The WH-1000XM5 is the previous-generation model. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 is the newer flagship, announced in May 2025. Which is the better buy depends chiefly on the current price gap and whether the XM6’s newer design and features are worth paying extra for.

| Model or offer | Reported price and context | What the comparison means |
|---|---|---|
| WH-1000XM5, U.S. | $198 against $400; WIRED described it as 51% off on Amazon and Sony in September 2026. B&H Photo was also listed at $198, described as 50% off. | A strong reported discount, but not a confirmed live offer. |
| WH-1000XM5, UK | £192 against £380 on Amazon UK during the Big Deal Days coverage published by What Hi-Fi? on October 6, 2026. | A UK sale report; it does not establish U.S. pricing or availability. |
| WH-1000XM6, UK | £319 against £399 on Amazon UK in the same What Hi-Fi? report. | The reported UK sale gap was £127 above the XM5 price. Compare current local listings rather than treating this past gap as current. |
| WH-1000XM6, U.S. | Sony announced a $449.99 U.S. suggested retail price at launch in May 2025. | This is a launch reference price, not a current offer. |
Choose the XM5 if the savings are substantial
What Hi-Fi? characterized the XM5 as especially compelling value when heavily discounted. If its live price is far below the XM6’s, and you do not need the newer model’s changes, the older flagship may be the more sensible purchase. A discounted price alone does not guarantee it is the right fit: consider how you carry headphones and whether you want the latest generation.
Consider the XM6 for the newer feature set
Sony’s XM6 announcement centers on its QN3 noise-cancelling processor and a 12-microphone system. Sony said the QN3 is seven times faster than the QN1 processor in the XM5 and that the XM6 has 1.5 times as many microphones as the XM5. These are manufacturer-published comparisons, not independent measurements of how much better the headphones perform in everyday use. What Hi-Fi? described the XM6 as bringing improved noise cancelling and sound; its 2026 expert roundup ranked it as its top premium noise-cancelling wireless headphone, an editorial assessment rather than a universal ranking.

Account for the carrying case and hinges
The XM5 does not fold at its hinges, a portability trade-off highlighted by TechRadar. The XM6 restores a folding design. If you regularly pack headphones into a small bag, that difference may matter as much as a modest price gap.
Is the WH-1000XM5 worth buying at $198?
At the reported U.S. price of $198, the XM5 was presented by WIRED and TechRadar as a heavily discounted, class-leading option. That makes it worth considering if the price is still available and you are comfortable buying the previous generation. The evidence here does not establish the current U.S. listing, so treat $198 as a September deal benchmark, not a promise of what you will pay now.

If the XM6 is only a little more expensive at the time you shop, weigh its newer noise-cancelling hardware and folding design against the XM5’s savings. If the XM5 remains much cheaper, the discount may outweigh those upgrades for many buyers. What Hi-Fi? also identifies Sony’s WH-CH720N as a less expensive noise-cancelling option, though the cited coverage does not provide a current price comparison for it.
