There is no universal winner. Choose the Sony WF-1000XM6 if you use Android or several platforms, need Bluetooth multipoint, want LDAC or LC3 codec options, or prefer a detailed equalizer. Choose the Apple AirPods Pro 3 if you use an iPhone and value seamless Apple-device integration, hearing features, workout heart-rate sensing, and Live Translation.

Noise-cancellation results are close and depend on the test: SoundGuys measured a small advantage for Apple, while What Hi-Fi? preferred Sony in its listening assessment. Battery, fit, software support, and your local price matter at least as much as either headline result.

Which earbuds should you buy?

Choose Sony for platform flexibility and control

The WF-1000XM6 is the more adaptable choice when your devices are not all made by Apple. It supports SBC and AAC for broad compatibility, plus LDAC for compatible Android hardware and LC3 for newer Bluetooth LE Audio implementations. Sony also provides Bluetooth multipoint, allowing the earbuds to maintain connections with two devices and switch between them without tying your setup to one manufacturer’s ecosystem.

  • OPTIMIZED COMFORT: Enjoy that just-right fit, with an improved, ear-hugging design and changeable ear tips.

Sony’s Sound Connect app includes a 10-band equalizer, so you can make substantial tonal changes rather than relying only on a few presets. The earbuds also support Hi-Res Audio Wireless and DSEE Extreme processing. These advantages are most useful to listeners who regularly move between a phone, tablet, laptop, or game device, and to anyone who wants to tune bass, mids, and treble manually.

Choose Apple for iPhone integration and health features

AirPods Pro 3 make the most sense for someone who already uses an iPhone and other Apple hardware. Apple-device pairing, automatic switching, spatial-audio controls, and the company’s hearing tools are designed around that environment. The model adds workout heart-rate sensing, hearing-test, hearing-aid and hearing-protection features, and Live Translation.

Those features are not simply properties of the earbuds in isolation. Apple states that availability can depend on compatible hardware, operating-system versions, supported languages, and region. Check the requirements for your country and devices before paying a premium for a particular function. On Android, AirPods Pro 3 still operate as Bluetooth earbuds, but SoundGuys describes their functionality as limited compared with use alongside Apple devices.

Noise cancellation: a close result, not a settled winner

Independent results do not produce one uncontested ranking. In SoundGuys’ 2026 measurement, AirPods Pro 3 reduced average loudness by 90%, compared with 88% for the WF-1000XM6. SoundGuys characterized the Sony result as close and noted that a two-percentage-point laboratory difference may not be obvious to most people.

What Hi-Fi? reached a different conclusion in its listening assessment and favored Sony for noise-canceling performance and sound. That is an editorial listening judgment rather than a universal measurement. Ear-tip seal, ear shape, test tracks, background noise, firmware, and measurement method all affect perceived ANC.

How to interpret the manufacturers’ claims

Sony says the WF-1000XM6 delivers a 25% further reduction in noise compared with the previous WF-1000XM5. That is a comparison with Sony’s older model, not with AirPods Pro 3. Apple’s product page describes AirPods Pro 3 as offering up to twice the ANC performance of AirPods Pro 2. That is Apple’s own comparison with an earlier Apple generation, not a head-to-head result against Sony.

For commuting, flights, offices, or household noise, both models are in the premium ANC class. Treat the small independent gap as test-specific and give equal attention to comfort and seal: an earbud that fits poorly will cancel less noise regardless of its processor.

Battery life: measured results versus advertised limits

SoundGuys recorded 9 hours and 41 minutes for Sony and 8 hours and 42 minutes for Apple in its ANC test. Those are results from one publisher’s test conditions, not guarantees for every listener. Volume, codec, calls, temperature, streaming format, and feature use can all change runtime.

Sony WF-1000XM6 Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Earbuds Headphones - Silver (2026) w 27-Month Axiom Device Care Program
  • THE BEST NOISE CANCELLATION: Experience powerful, adaptive noise cancelling that keeps distractions out and your music front and center.
  • LONG BATTERY LIFE AND CONVENIENT CHARGING: Stay powered up with up to 24 hours of total playback
  • Bundle includes both Axiom CPS program and WF1000XM6/S
  • Care includes additional 27-month Device Plan, managed by CPS.

The manufacturers quote different types of figures. Sony’s US product FAQ states up to 24 total hours with the case, which combines repeated earbud charges and the case’s stored energy. Apple claims up to 8 hours of ANC listening per charge. Because the claims use different definitions, they should not be compared as though they were the same test.

What the numbers mean in daily use

  • If you often spend a full workday away from a charger, Sony’s measured lead provides more margin in the cited test.
  • If you normally recharge during short breaks or return to a case each evening, either model can cover typical commuting and office sessions.
  • Heavy calling, high volume, spatial audio, or continuous translation can reduce the runtime you actually see.

Sound, codecs, and listening controls

Sony’s broader codec menu

WF-1000XM6 supports SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. SBC and AAC cover ordinary Bluetooth playback across phones and computers. LDAC can carry higher-bitrate audio on compatible Android devices, while LC3 is associated with newer Bluetooth LE Audio support. The benefit depends on both the source device and the software path; a phone or laptop that does not offer a codec cannot use it.

Sony’s QN3e noise-canceling processor and Integrated Processor V2 are part of the model’s hardware platform. Hi-Res Audio Wireless support and DSEE Extreme processing are intended for listeners who want Sony’s signal-processing options, although neither feature makes a low-quality recording contain detail that was never captured.

Apple’s tightly integrated presentation

AirPods Pro 3 are reported with SBC and AAC support. Their appeal is less about a long codec list and more about consistent behavior across Apple devices, including spatial-audio features and automatic switching. If your main sources are an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, that integration can be more valuable than an additional Android-oriented codec.

On a mixed-device setup, Apple lacks the same reported combination of LDAC, LC3, multipoint, and a 10-band manual EQ. You can still play audio from a non-Apple source, but the experience and feature set are not equivalent to using them with Apple’s own hardware.

Special features: practical differences beyond music

What Sony adds

  • Bluetooth multipoint: maintain connections with two devices, useful when moving between a work computer and a phone.
  • 10-band equalizer: detailed manual tuning in the Sound Connect app.
  • LDAC and LC3: options for compatible high-bitrate or LE Audio sources.
  • Qi wireless charging: recharge the case on a compatible Qi pad.
  • DSEE Extreme and Hi-Res Audio Wireless: Sony processing and format support for compatible listening setups.

What Apple adds

  • Hearing tools: hearing testing, hearing-aid functionality, and hearing protection, subject to Apple’s device, software, language, and regional requirements.
  • Workout heart-rate sensing: records heart-rate data during supported workouts when used with compatible Apple software.
  • Live Translation: translation features that depend on supported languages, software, region, and compatible Apple hardware.
  • Spatial audio: Apple-oriented spatial-audio playback and personalization.

Apple’s extras can justify the price for someone who will use them regularly. They are less compelling if you use Android, do not need hearing or workout tools, or primarily want manual sound adjustment.

Fit, ear tips, and durability

Fit is the most personal part of this comparison. What Hi-Fi? found AirPods Pro 3 easier for its reviewers to fit and reported five tip sizes, compared with four for Sony. That does not predict which model will seal your ears: ear-canal shape, insertion angle, and tip material vary from person to person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try every supplied tip size and perform the phone’s or app’s fit check where available. A stable seal improves bass response and passive isolation, while an overly tight seal can become uncomfortable during long sessions. If a retailer allows returns, use that window for a genuine multi-hour test rather than deciding after a five-minute listen.

The protection ratings also describe different levels. Sony is rated IPX4, indicating water resistance without a dust-rating claim in the cited specification. Apple is rated IP57, which includes dust protection and resistance to temporary immersion under the applicable test conditions. Neither rating makes the earbuds suitable for swimming, and sweat, salt, soap, and charging contacts still require care.

Price and value by market

Sony’s US product FAQ lists a $329.99 MSRP; the page was generated July 24, 2026 and warns that promotions may no longer apply. SoundGuys’ comparison, published February 12, 2026, used US figures of $329.99 for Sony and $249 for Apple. What Hi-Fi? also reported market-specific prices and observed discounts, but those offers can change.

Use those numbers to understand positioning, not as a checkout quote. Before buying, verify the exact model, retailer, stock, warranty, and return policy in your country. A temporary discount can reverse the value calculation, especially when Apple’s feature set is only useful to an iPhone owner or Sony’s codec and EQ advantages are irrelevant to your sources.

When paying more for Sony makes sense

  • You need one pair to work well with Android, Windows, and Apple devices.
  • You will use multipoint every day.
  • You want LDAC or LC3 and a 10-band EQ.
  • You value the longer result in SoundGuys’ ANC battery test.

When Apple’s price is easier to justify

  • Your primary phone is an iPhone and you use other Apple devices.
  • You will use hearing, heart-rate, or Live Translation features.
  • You prioritize the Apple switching and spatial-audio experience over codec variety.
  • The AirPods are substantially cheaper in your market at the time you buy.

Decision guide for common setups

You use Android exclusively

Start with Sony. Its reported codec support, multipoint, app-based EQ, and broader control survive outside Apple’s ecosystem. AirPods Pro 3 can play audio on Android, but SoundGuys reports limited functionality, so you would be paying for features you may not be able to access.

You use an iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Start with AirPods Pro 3 if seamless switching, hearing tools, heart-rate sensing, Live Translation, or spatial audio matter. Choose Sony instead if you still need multipoint with non-Apple equipment or want extensive EQ control.

You alternate between a phone and a work laptop

Sony’s multipoint is the clearest practical advantage. Confirm that your laptop’s Bluetooth implementation behaves as expected, then pair both devices through the Sound Connect workflow. AirPods’ automatic Apple switching is convenient when both devices belong to Apple, but it is not the same cross-platform use case.

You fly frequently

Both are credible premium ANC options. SoundGuys measured a slight Apple advantage, while What Hi-Fi? preferred Sony. Choose the pair that forms the better seal in your ears and that you can recharge reliably during travel; the measured difference is too small to treat as a universal airline verdict.

You care about hearing protection or hearing assistance

AirPods Pro 3 deserve closer consideration because Apple lists hearing-test, hearing-aid, and hearing-protection functions. Confirm medical, regulatory, language, device, and regional availability before relying on any of them.

Setup checklist before you keep either pair

  1. Check the platform: confirm your phone, tablet, and computer support the features you expect, not merely basic Bluetooth audio.
  2. Install current software: update the operating system and the Sony or Apple companion software before judging pairing, switching, or health features.
  3. Test every tip: listen for a consistent seal, walk, speak, and wear the earbuds for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Configure controls: set ANC, transparency, equalizer, spatial audio, and touch or stem controls for your normal use.
  5. Test your critical feature: make one multipoint handoff, hearing test, workout recording, or translation session before the return period ends.
  6. Verify charging: check the case, cable or Qi pad, and battery reporting rather than assuming the advertised maximum applies to your routine.
  7. Record the purchase terms: save the receipt, warranty information, and return deadline because fit is impossible to guarantee from specifications.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reading a manufacturer comparison as an independent head-to-head: Sony’s 25% claim compares WF-1000XM6 with WF-1000XM5; Apple’s two-times claim compares AirPods Pro 3 with AirPods Pro 2.
  • Treating one ANC percentage as a permanent ranking: SoundGuys and What Hi-Fi? reached different conclusions using different methods.
  • Comparing unlike battery claims: a measured ANC runtime, an earbud-per-charge claim, and a total case figure are not interchangeable.
  • Assuming an IP rating means waterproof: neither model is intended for swimming, and charging wet earbuds can damage them.
  • Buying by tip count: five sizes versus four does not establish which earbud will fit you.
  • Using an old price as today’s price: the cited US figures are dated and discounts or stock can change.
  • Paying for unavailable software features: Apple features can depend on hardware, software, language, and region.

Bottom line

Buy the Sony WF-1000XM6 for the more flexible, controllable package: Android and multi-platform support, LDAC and LC3 options, multipoint, a 10-band EQ, and the stronger battery result in SoundGuys’ test. Buy AirPods Pro 3 for an iPhone-centered setup where Apple integration, hearing features, workout heart-rate sensing, Live Translation, and spatial audio are the priorities. Noise cancellation is effectively a close call rather than a decisive reason to ignore ecosystem, fit, or the price available where you live.
