Short answer: Choose the Sony NW-A306 for the smallest streaming-focused player and the longest stated battery life. Choose the FiiO M11S when balanced-output power, multiple headphone connections and Android app flexibility matter more. The FiiO M15S is the premium, heavier choice for demanding headphones and desktop-style use. None can be declared a universal sound-quality winner from specifications alone.
At a glance: which player fits your use?
These players target different listening habits rather than competing as identical products. Sony’s NW-A306 is a compact Android/Wi-Fi Walkman built around portability, streaming and efficient playback. FiiO’s M11S gives you substantially more balanced-output drive and a more flexible headphone connection layout. The M15S moves further toward a transportable high-end source that can also serve in a desktop system.

What the three players actually are
Sony NW-A306
The NW-A306 is an Android-based Walkman with Wi-Fi streaming and a 3.5mm headphone output. Sony specifies support for PCM files up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD up to 11.2896MHz. Those figures describe the formats the player can process; they do not predict how every recording or headphone will sound.
#1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi compatible for direct download and streaming
- Made with a rigid aluminum frame and gold solder inside a precisely engineered chassis
- Up to 36 hours of 44.1KHz FLAC playback
- Supported by Android
- Connect to a PC to access your music collection
Sony positions the model as a stylish, compact player for downloading and streaming music. Its compact design is the main practical advantage over the larger FiiO units. If you want a dedicated player that can run music-service apps without carrying a phone, this is the most straightforward option in the comparison.
FiiO M11S
The M11S runs Android 10 and uses dual ES9038Q2M DACs. Its headline specification is a balanced output rated at 670mW into 32 ohms. That is a large reserve for many wired headphones, especially models that sound constrained from a low-power source. FiiO also provides multiple headphone connections, allowing you to use more than one cable termination without an adapter.
Android app support makes the M11S suitable for local playback and streaming services. In practice, the advantage is flexibility: you can install and use compatible apps rather than being limited to a single playback ecosystem. The trade-off is shorter stated battery life and a less pocket-friendly form than the Sony.
FiiO M15S
The M15S is the premium model here. It uses an ES9038PRO DAC and offers six operating modes, including Roon Ready and desktop mode. FiiO says its amplifier can be adjusted through five gain levels. These features are useful when the player is expected to work both as a portable source and as part of a stationary system.
The M15S is heavier than the NW-A306 and is best considered when your headphones, speakers or desktop workflow justify the additional size. Its published battery measurements are lower than either Sony’s longest claim or the M11S figure, particularly when using balanced output.

Sound quality: what can and cannot be concluded
Specifications show capability, not a universal winner
DAC model, supported sample rates and output power are measurable capabilities. They do not establish that one player sounds better with every headphone. The cited information contains no controlled, level-matched comparison of the NW-A306, M11S and M15S using the same headphones, music files, volume and output mode. Without that control, a claim that Sony or FiiO universally sounds better would be speculation.
Headphone sensitivity, impedance, recording quality, listening level and output connection can change the result more than the badge on the player. A high-power output may make a difficult headphone more dynamic at normal listening levels, while an efficient in-ear monitor may need little power and reveal differences in noise performance or tuning instead.

How the published designs may affect your choice
- NW-A306: Sony’s Walkman processing and tuning may appeal if you prefer a mature, balanced presentation and want a compact source. PCM support reaches 32-bit/384kHz and DSD support reaches 11.2896MHz.
- M11S: Dual ES9038Q2M DACs and a powerful balanced stage provide the electrical headroom to drive many demanding headphones. That does not guarantee a preferred tonal balance.
- M15S: The ES9038PRO implementation, five gain levels and desktop mode make it the most adaptable for different loads and system roles. Its premium architecture still cannot replace a same-headphone listening comparison.
A sensible way to audition
- Use the same lossless tracks on each player, preferably files you know well.
- Connect the same headphones and use the same termination whenever possible. Do not compare a single-ended output on one player with a balanced output on another without noting the change.
- Match volume before judging detail or bass. The louder sample often appears better even when it is not.
- Listen for concrete traits—bass control, vocal placement, treble smoothness, noise during quiet passages and the ability to reach your preferred level without strain.
- Repeat the comparison over several recordings. A player that flatters one track may not suit your whole library.
Output power and headphone connections
For wired listening, the most consequential difference is not the DAC logo but how each output drives your headphones. Balanced operation uses separate signal paths for the two channels and, on the M11S, is specified at a much higher power level than a typical small single-ended player. Balanced does not automatically sound better; it is valuable when your headphones benefit from the extra voltage or current and you have a correctly wired cable.
| Player | Published output information | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Sony NW-A306 | 3.5mm headphone output; exact power figure is not stated in the cited product details. | Well suited to efficient headphones and IEMs. Check demanding over-ear models individually. |
| FiiO M11S | Balanced output rated at 670mW into 32 ohms (FiiO product page); multiple headphone connections. | More headroom for difficult headphones and balanced cables. Actual level still depends on headphone sensitivity and gain. |
| FiiO M15S | Single-ended and balanced operation documented in FiiO’s battery test; five gain levels. | Flexible matching for portable and desktop headphones, with battery use increasing in balanced mode. |
Choosing a cable safely
Use a cable made for your headphone’s wiring and the player’s balanced connector. A balanced plug must never be inserted into an incompatible single-ended socket, and a cable wired for one manufacturer’s detachable connector may not fit another. If your headphones only have a 3.5mm cable, the NW-A306 can use it directly; the M11S and M15S can use their single-ended outputs or a correctly terminated balanced replacement.
Battery life in real use
Sony publishes several NW-A306 figures rather than one universal number. It rates up to 36 hours playing 44.1kHz FLAC, up to 32 hours playing 96kHz FLAC and about 26 hours when using a music-service app. What Hi-Fi? reported approximately 32 hours in its listed NW-A306 configuration. These figures are different workloads, so the 36-hour result should not be treated as a streaming estimate.

FiiO lists about 14 hours for the M11S. For the M15S, FiiO’s parameter test reports about 10.5 hours through the 3.5mm output and nine hours through balanced output under stated conditions: MP3 playback, a 32-ohm load and the screen off. Those test conditions are not the same as Sony’s FLAC or streaming claims, so a direct ranking by hours is approximate.

Why your result may be lower
- Wi-Fi streaming uses more energy than playing files stored locally.
- High-resolution FLAC and DSD require more processing than standard-rate files.
- A bright screen, high screen-on time, Bluetooth and background Android activity reduce runtime.
- Higher gain and balanced output can increase amplifier consumption, particularly on the M15S.
- Battery age, temperature and signal strength affect any player’s actual runtime.
If long trips matter, download albums before leaving Wi-Fi, lower the screen timeout, disable radios you do not need and carry a power bank. Treat every quoted number as a ceiling for a specified test, not a guarantee for your playlist.
Streaming, Android and wireless use
NW-A306 for simple streaming
The NW-A306 combines Android and Wi-Fi with Sony’s Walkman playback environment. Connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to your music-service app and download albums for offline use when the service supports it. Streaming is the reason to choose this model over a traditional file-only player, but app playback is also the battery mode for which Sony quotes about 26 hours rather than 36.
M11S for app flexibility
Android 10 gives the M11S a broad app environment. Install only the services you use, keep the operating system and apps current when updates are offered, and disable background syncing that you do not need. Android flexibility is useful if you use several services or alternate between streaming and local files; it also means more settings and more potential background battery use than a dedicated offline player.
M15S for a broader system role
Roon Ready and desktop mode are among the M15S’s six operating modes. That makes it the logical choice when the player may feed a desktop system as well as headphones. Select the mode that matches the job instead of leaving a high-power desktop-oriented mode active during every portable session.

- 1 Line LCD
- 8 Playback Modes
- Up to 16 Hours battery life with 2AA batteries (not supplied)
Local files, microSD and library planning
Local storage and microSD expansion can determine whether a player remains useful after your first few albums. The cited product details do not state internal-storage capacities or microSD card limits for these exact models, so verify the current specification for your region before buying a card or moving a large library.
Plan your library around the formats you actually own. The NW-A306’s published decoding ceiling is PCM 32-bit/384kHz and DSD 11.2896MHz, while the FiiO models are positioned for high-resolution local playback. Higher-resolution files consume more space and can reduce battery life; they are not automatically higher quality if the mastering is inferior.
- Keep a backup of your music before formatting or inserting a new card.
- Use a clear folder structure and consistent metadata so Android players can index albums correctly.
- Leave free space for app caches, artwork and temporary downloads.
- Buy a card only after confirming the player’s supported capacity and filesystem in its current manual.
Desktop and USB-DAC considerations
The M15S is the only model in this comparison explicitly described with desktop mode. That mode is intended for a stationary setup where continuous power and a larger amplifier stage are acceptable trade-offs. Roon Ready support can also make it a network endpoint in a compatible Roon system.
The NW-A306 and M11S can still be useful beside a computer, but the supplied specifications do not establish their exact USB-DAC modes, supported operating systems or maximum USB rates. If computer playback is essential, confirm those details in the current manuals before treating either device as a desktop DAC. A USB connection can also change battery behavior, driver requirements and volume control, so test it with your operating system and headphones.
Portability and daily handling
The NW-A306 is described as compact, which helps if the player will travel in a pocket or small case. The M15S is explicitly the heavier option; its larger feature set is designed for listeners who accept more bulk in exchange for power and desktop functions. The supplied information does not provide comparable weights for all three models, so do not infer exact pack weight from the product tier.

Consider your complete carry kit, not only the player: headphones, a balanced cable, spare storage, a charging cable and a protective case. A lighter player paired with efficient IEMs may be more practical than a powerful player whose capability you rarely use.
Step-by-step buying and setup decisions
Choose the NW-A306 when streaming and endurance come first
- Confirm that your preferred music services support the Android version and region of the player.
- Check that your headphones use a standard 3.5mm plug or obtain a compatible cable.
- Connect the player to Wi-Fi through the Android Settings app, sign in to each service and download a few albums for offline testing.
- Measure a normal listening day with your screen brightness, volume and app mix. Use Sony’s approximately 26-hour app figure as the relevant reference, not the 36-hour local-FLAC maximum.
Choose the M11S when your headphones need balanced power
- Check your headphone impedance and sensitivity and determine whether a balanced cable is available for that model.
- Install your streaming apps on Android 10, then turn off unnecessary background synchronization.
- Start at a low gain and increase it only enough to reach a clean, comfortable level.
- Use the balanced output only with a correctly wired balanced cable; compare its battery cost with the benefit you actually hear.
- Expect roughly 14 hours as FiiO’s stated battery reference, subject to your screen, files, radios and output mode.
Choose the M15S for a portable/desktop system
- List the roles you need: portable headphones, a desktop DAC, a Roon endpoint or several of these.
- Use the five gain levels to match the connected load rather than leaving maximum gain selected.
- Select the appropriate operating mode for the session; desktop mode is unnecessary for every portable outing.
- Budget for shorter runtime, especially if you use balanced output. FiiO’s stated test figures are about 10.5 hours single-ended and nine hours balanced.
- Confirm that the player’s size and weight are acceptable with your headphones and cables before committing to it as an everyday carry.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“My balanced cable is louder, so it must sound better.”
Balanced output can provide more power, and the volume difference alone can create a false preference. Match levels before judging. If the headphone is already efficient on the 3.5mm output, the extra power may offer little practical benefit.
“The battery does not match the headline number.”
Check whether you are streaming, using high-resolution files, leaving the screen on or running balanced output. Compare your workload with the manufacturer’s stated condition. Sony’s 36-hour figure is for 44.1kHz FLAC, while its app estimate is about 26 hours; FiiO’s M15S figures use MP3, a 32-ohm load and the screen off.
“An app will not install or stream reliably.”
Verify Wi-Fi strength, date and time, available storage and account-region compatibility. Update the app and player firmware when an official update is offered. For travel, download music in advance so playback does not depend on a weak connection.
“The player sounds quiet with my over-ear headphones.”
Check the selected gain, output connector and cable. On the M11S, the balanced rating is 670mW into 32 ohms, but that figure does not describe every impedance or sensitivity combination. The NW-A306’s exact output power is not stated in the cited details, so verify compatibility for unusually demanding headphones before purchase.
Total system cost: account for the accessories
The player is only one part of the purchase. Include the headphones or IEMs, a suitable balanced cable if you choose the M11S or M15S, storage for local files, a case and a charger or power bank. A powerful player paired with efficient IEMs may cost more without improving your listening experience; conversely, saving on the source can be false economy if your headphones need substantially more drive.
Retail prices and availability vary by country and over time. Compare the current price of the player and the complete accessory set in your region rather than relying on an old launch price. The relevant question is the cost of the system that solves your problem: long streaming sessions, balanced drive, or a desktop-capable source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFinal decision framework
- Pick Sony NW-A306 if you value compact size, Wi-Fi streaming, a familiar 3.5mm connection and the highest stated endurance in this group.
- Pick FiiO M11S if your headphones benefit from a powerful balanced output, you need multiple headphone connectors or you want broad Android app flexibility.
- Pick FiiO M15S if you are willing to carry a heavier player for five gain levels, six operating modes, Roon Ready support and desktop use.
- Do not choose on DAC branding alone. Use the same headphones and matched volume when sound quality is the deciding factor; the available specifications do not prove a universal winner.
Sources for the published figures
Battery, format-support and output claims come from the current Sony Electronics NW-A306 product information, FiiO’s M11S and M15S product information, and FiiO’s M15S parameter test. The approximately 32-hour NW-A306 figure is from What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 buying guide. Sony describes the NW-A306 as a compact player for downloading and streaming music, while FiiO states that the M15S can be adjusted with five gain levels.
