There is no universal winner. An iPhone feeding a transparent, sufficiently powerful USB DAC/headphone amplifier can sound as clean as a Walkman and may be indistinguishable with easy-to-drive headphones. A Walkman is the better choice when the particular model supplies more useful power, offers balanced drive, provides Sony processing you prefer, handles local files more simply, or gives you a distraction-free player.

The comparison must be made between an exact Walkman model, an exact DAC/amp, and your headphones. “Sony Walkman” covers players with substantially different output stages, so a brand-wide claim that every Walkman sounds better than every iPhone-plus-DAC setup is not supported.

What actually determines which sounds better

Your ears receive the output of a complete chain, not a logo. The relevant chain is the music file or stream, the phone or player’s digital processing, the DAC, the analog amplifier, the cable, and the headphones. The weakest or least compatible part usually determines the result.

The iPhone remains the digital source

When an iPhone is connected to a USB DAC, the DAC replaces or bypasses the phone’s internal digital-to-analog conversion and analog headphone output stage. The iPhone still selects the track, decodes the file, and sends digital audio over USB. Sony’s support documentation says that an iPhone can play high-resolution audio files through a USB-DAC connection; on compatible Sony equipment, the USB-DAC port is the relevant input rather than USB1 or USB2.

A competent DAC/amp normally has a flat audible frequency response and noise below the threshold of hearing with ordinary headphones. In that situation, changing to a Walkman cannot create more detail from the same recording. Differences you can hear are more likely to come from output level, amplifier headroom, output impedance, channel balance, DSP or EQ, or a level mismatch during the comparison.

A Walkman is an integrated player and amplifier

A Walkman combines storage or streaming software, a DAC, an analog output stage, a volume control and Sony-specific processing in one device. Some models are designed around modest in-ear monitors; others include a balanced connection and a higher-power amplifier for demanding over-ear headphones. The model number is therefore more informative than the Walkman name alone.

Model-specific output figures

Published specifications show why a model-by-model comparison is essential. The figures below are from Sony’s stated conditions and should not be treated as interchangeable laboratory measurements.

Device Output information What the figure means
Sony NW-A35/A36HN (2016 release) 35 mW + 35 mW at JEITA 16 ohms A published per-channel rating at a 16-ohm load. It does not describe every impedance or distortion condition.
Sony PHA-1A (2015 release) Approximately 80 mW + 80 mW into 32 ohms at 1% distortion A portable USB DAC/headphone amplifier rating at 32 ohms and 1% total harmonic distortion.
Sony PHA-1A (2015 release) Approximately 148 mW + 148 mW into 8 ohms at 10% distortion A higher-power figure measured at a very high distortion limit; it is not directly comparable with the 1% result.
Sony PHA-1A (2015 release) Approximately 16.4 mW + 16.4 mW into 300 ohms at 10% distortion Shows how available power falls as impedance rises, even under the looser 10% distortion condition.
Sony NW-WM1ZM2 S-Master HX digital amplifier, native DSD compatibility, balanced and high-power output Sony describes the capabilities but does not state a single output-power number in the cited specification.

The PHA-1A numbers illustrate two important cautions. First, power depends on headphone impedance: an amplifier that is strong at 8 or 32 ohms may provide much less voltage into 300 ohms. Second, a result specified at 10% distortion is not a clean-output guarantee at normal listening levels. Use figures measured under the same distortion limit when comparing devices.

When output power changes the result

Efficient headphones and most sensitive in-ear monitors need little voltage or current. An iPhone USB DAC with adequate gain can drive them loudly with plenty of headroom, so a more expensive player may not produce an audible improvement. If both devices remain in their linear operating range, their frequency response can be effectively the same.

Harder headphones may need substantially more voltage, current, or both. High impedance, low sensitivity, planar-magnetic designs and unusually quiet recordings can expose an amplifier that is running near its limit. Symptoms include insufficient volume, compressed peaks, bass that loses control, or audible clipping on transients. Do not diagnose this from impedance alone: sensitivity, expressed for a specified voltage or power, is equally important.

Balanced output can increase the available voltage swing on some designs, but the connector itself does not guarantee better sound. The headphone must be wired for balanced operation, the amplifier must implement a genuinely separate balanced output, and the gain must remain clean. Never use a passive adapter that ties balanced negative terminals together; use the cable and connector arrangement specified by the manufacturer.

How to use an iPhone with a USB DAC

The exact cable depends on the iPhone connector and the DAC’s USB input. Use a data-capable adapter, not a charge-only lead, and expect some combinations to need external power.

  1. Choose the DAC/amp. Check its output power at your headphone’s impedance, output impedance for sensitive IEMs, supported sample rates, and power draw from the phone.
  2. Connect the digital path. Attach the DAC to the iPhone with the appropriate certified adapter or direct USB cable. Connect the DAC’s USB-DAC input; a multi-input unit may label other sockets USB1 or USB2 for different functions.
  3. Power the DAC. Turn on its battery or connect the specified external supply if the iPhone reports that the accessory needs more power than the phone can provide.
  4. Connect headphones to the DAC. Set the DAC’s volume low before playback. If it has both single-ended and balanced outputs, use the output that matches your headphone cable and the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Select a known recording. Use a local lossless file or a streaming service set to its highest available quality. Disable normalization, crossfade and software EQ for a neutral baseline.
  6. Confirm the output device. Open the iPhone’s audio-output picker and select the connected USB device. Start playback and verify that the DAC’s sample-rate indicator, if present, changes as expected.
  7. Set safe level and headroom. Raise volume gradually. Leave enough reserve that loud passages do not require the amplifier to operate at its limit, and protect your hearing by avoiding sustained excessive levels.

Some music apps resample everything to one fixed rate, while others pass the file’s native rate to the DAC. That difference affects the technical path but is rarely audible by itself. The important test is whether the output is clean and whether the app applies EQ, loudness normalization or other processing.

What a dedicated Walkman changes

Local playback and fewer points of failure

A Walkman can keep music on the player, work without a phone connection, and avoid notifications, calls and app updates. For listeners who keep a carefully tagged local library, this may matter more than a small change in measured noise or distortion. Confirm the model’s storage, card support and file-system limits before buying; those details vary by generation.

Sony processing and native formats

Higher-end models may include DSEE processing, equalization, selectable digital filters and native DSD playback. Sony describes the NW-WM1ZM2 as using S-Master HX digital amplifier technology and supporting native DSD. These features are preferences, not proof of superior fidelity: DSEE and EQ deliberately alter the signal, and a native-DSD indicator does not make a recording better mastered.

Balanced and high-power options

A model such as the NW-WM1ZM2 is specified with balanced and high-power output. That can be useful with a compatible cable and difficult headphones, but the practical gain depends on the headphone’s sensitivity and the amplifier’s actual voltage and current limits. With efficient IEMs, the balanced jack may add no audible benefit and can reveal hiss if its noise floor is higher.

How to make a fair listening comparison

Human hearing is strongly influenced by loudness and expectation. A louder device is commonly judged as more detailed or more dynamic, even when the signal is otherwise identical.

  1. Use one pair of headphones. Do not compare different headphones or cables at the same time.
  2. Use the same track and section. A lossless local file removes differences in streaming catalogs, network conditions and app decoding.
  3. Match volume closely. Measure voltage at the headphone connector with suitable equipment, or use a calibrated test tone and an external meter. Matching by the position of two volume knobs is not reliable.
  4. Disable processing first. Turn off EQ, DSEE, crossfeed, spatial effects, loudness normalization and replay gain on both devices. Record the settings before enabling any preferred processing.
  5. Allow both devices to reach normal operating state. Portable amplifiers do not need a long “burn-in” period for this comparison, but batteries should be charged and connections secure.
  6. Switch quickly and blindly if possible. Use the same musical passage and have another person change inputs without telling you which is active. Take notes on specific observations such as hiss, channel imbalance, bass compression or clipping.
  7. Repeat with demanding material. Include a quiet classical passage, a dense peak and a bass-heavy track. If the difference appears only at an unsafe volume, it is not a useful purchasing advantage.

If you hear a difference after level matching, test one variable at a time. First bypass DSP, then change output mode, then try a different headphone. This separates a genuine amplifier or compatibility issue from a tuning preference.

Headphone matching checklist

Efficient IEMs and portable headphones

  • Prioritize low output impedance so the amplifier does not change the IEM’s frequency response.
  • Check for audible hiss at the lowest usable volume.
  • Prefer fine-grained volume control; powerful balanced outputs can make the first few steps too loud.
  • Compare battery life, connector convenience and library access before chasing small DAC differences.

High-impedance dynamic headphones

  • Look for sufficient voltage swing at the headphone’s rated impedance, not just a large wattage number at 16 or 32 ohms.
  • Listen for clean peaks on recordings with wide dynamics.
  • Use the manufacturer’s output data as a starting point, but treat ratings at 10% distortion as a warning that the stated maximum is not a normal listening target.

Low-sensitivity planar headphones

  • Check both current delivery and voltage. A device can have an adequate impedance rating yet still sound strained with a low-sensitivity planar design.
  • Test the exact headphone at your intended listening level and leave headroom for recordings mastered more quietly.
  • Balanced drive may help when the amplifier is designed to provide more swing on that output, but it is not mandatory if the single-ended output already remains clean.

DSP, EQ and software differences

Two devices can measure similarly with processing disabled and still sound different in normal use because their software is configured differently. Sony’s DSEE modes, tone controls, digital filters and volume normalization change the signal. The iPhone app may add its own EQ, spatial audio, crossfade or replay-gain behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a neutral comparison, create a written settings checklist: EQ flat, enhancement modes off, spatial processing off, normalization off, same replay-gain policy, and the same sample or track. Then make a second comparison with your preferred processing enabled. If you prefer one device after that, the preference is valid, but it is a tuning and usability choice rather than evidence that its DAC is inherently more accurate.

Usability, battery and system trade-offs

Consideration iPhone plus USB DAC Dedicated Walkman
Music access Excellent streaming and app choice; local-file behavior depends on the app. Designed for local playback; streaming capability varies by model and software generation.
Portability One familiar phone plus a second device, cable or short stack. One self-contained player, although a high-end model can be heavier than a phone.
Distractions Calls, notifications and other apps remain available unless deliberately disabled. Usually offers a more focused listening environment.
Power The DAC may draw from or charge its own battery; the phone’s battery can decline faster. One player battery to manage; runtime depends on screen, wireless and amplifier mode.
Upgrade path Replace the DAC/amp while keeping the phone and headphones. Upgrading generally means replacing the player, though the headphones remain usable.
Connectivity complexity Requires a compatible adapter, cable and sometimes external power. Fewer interconnects, but proprietary or balanced cables may be required for some outputs.

Neither arrangement is automatically quieter or more reliable. A poorly shielded cable, a loose adapter, an app that resamples unexpectedly or a Walkman’s aggressive processing can matter more than the headline DAC chip.

Common problems and fixes

The iPhone does not recognize the DAC

  • Reconnect the adapter with the DAC powered off, then power the DAC and reconnect.
  • Try a known data-capable cable and inspect the connector for debris.
  • If the DAC needs more current, use its battery or the manufacturer’s powered connection.
  • Close and reopen the music app, then select the USB device again in the audio-output picker.

There is no sound or the level is extremely low

  • Check that headphones are plugged into the DAC’s headphone output rather than a line output.
  • Verify that the DAC’s hardware volume is raised and that the iPhone has selected it as the active output.
  • Disable a digital-volume lock or fixed-line-out mode if the DAC provides one.

You hear hiss with sensitive IEMs

  • Use the lowest-gain setting and a single-ended output if it has a lower noise floor.
  • Check the DAC’s output impedance and try an attenuator only if it does not alter the IEM’s response.
  • Compare with the Walkman’s output at the same level; a more powerful amplifier is not necessarily quieter.

The Walkman sounds different after changing settings

  • Reset EQ, DSEE, tone controls, digital filters, volume normalization and balance to neutral.
  • Confirm that the same file is being played rather than a different master or a streaming version.
  • Check whether the balanced and single-ended outputs use different gain or processing paths.

Which setup should you choose?

Choose the iPhone and USB DAC when

  • Your headphones are easy to drive and the DAC provides clean output without hiss.
  • You rely on streaming services, communication apps or a phone-based library.
  • You want to upgrade the amplifier independently of the phone.
  • You are satisfied with the iPhone app’s organization and do not need an offline-only player.

Choose a Walkman when

  • Your exact model offers the voltage, current or balanced output your headphones need.
  • You prefer Sony’s processing, native-format handling or library interface with those features configured to your taste.
  • You want music separated from calls, notifications and phone battery demands.
  • The complete Walkman is simpler to carry than a phone, adapter, cable and DAC stack.

Reconsider both if

  • Your headphones are the limiting component. A new source cannot correct a poor fit, damaged driver or sound signature you dislike.
  • You are comparing unmatched volume or different EQ. Correct those variables before spending money.
  • The published output specification does not state the impedance, distortion limit or channel conditions. Treat an impressive-sounding number without those qualifications cautiously.

Bottom line

With efficient headphones and neutral settings, a good iPhone USB DAC can sound effectively the same as a Walkman because both can deliver a transparent digital-to-analog conversion and clean amplification. A Walkman pulls ahead as a practical choice when its specific output stage gives demanding headphones more usable headroom, when balanced drive is genuinely useful, or when its local-library workflow and Sony processing are worth carrying a dedicated player. Compare the exact models at matched volume; the headphone match and the way you listen matter more than the Walkman name or the presence of a USB DAC alone.
