Sony has officially announced the NW-ZX900 Walkman and opened US pre-orders, ending the uncertainty around the leak. The player combines a 5-inch display, balanced audio hardware and Sony’s premium digital-audio design, but its final value depends on whether the leaked RAM, Android version, storage expansion and chassis specifications are confirmed for retail units.
Price and release status
Sony Electronics announced the NW-ZX900 on October 15, 2026, and lists it for US pre-order at a suggested retail price of $1,899.99. Sony identifies its own store, Amazon, B&H and Crutchfield as pre-order retailers. Prices, stock and delivery estimates can change after launch.
An earlier Notebookcheck report, citing The Walkman Blog, described a Japan price of ¥210,000, converted in that report to about $1,330, and expected a November launch. That figure was pre-announcement reporting rather than Sony’s confirmed US price. The announcement establishes the US price, but the supplied announcement details do not give a fixed US ship date.

What is confirmed and what remains a leak
Sony confirms the display size, amplification approach and core audio processing. Several of the most important buying specifications still come from the earlier leak and should not be treated as final until Sony publishes a complete regional specification sheet.

Battery life: what “doubled” really means
The official battery claim is mode-specific rather than a universal everyday-runtime promise. Sony rates the player for up to 40 hours when playing 128 kbps MP3 files and up to 35 hours when using streaming-service apps. Sony’s footnotes say results vary with settings, environment and usage, and that battery capacity decreases over time.
The “doubled battery life” framing comes from the leak-era comparison with the previous generation, not from an independent standardized test supplied with the announcement. Streaming over wireless networks, high-resolution files, screen brightness, Bluetooth use and balanced-output listening can all produce shorter runtime than the headline figures.
RAM, Android 16 and storage
8 GB RAM
The leaked specification lists 8 GB of RAM. If accurate, that would give the NW-ZX900 more headroom for switching between music apps and other Android processes, but Sony has not yet confirmed the memory figure in the available official material.
Android 16
Android 16 was also reported in the leak. Treat the operating-system version as unconfirmed until Sony publishes the final software specification. The installed Android version matters for app compatibility and how long the player continues receiving security and application support.
Rank #2
- Wi-Fi compatible for direct download and streaming
- Made with a rigid aluminum frame and gold solder inside a precisely engineered chassis
- Up to 36 hours of 44.1KHz FLAC playback
- Supported by Android
- Connect to a PC to access your music collection
Usable storage and microSD
The leak describes 64 GB of internal storage and a microSD slot. Sony’s product page notes that approximately 33 GB is available after system allocation, so the nominal capacity is not the space users can fill with music. Sony should be checked for the supported card type and maximum capacity before buying a card.
Audio design and physical connections
Sony confirms S-Master HX amplification, balanced output, Native DSD support and a DSD Remastering Engine. It also says the NW-ZX900 inherits premium audio components used in its flagship model, the NW-WMZM3. Those features target listeners with high-resolution libraries and headphones or in-ear monitors that can take advantage of a balanced connection.
The leak reports both 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm headphone outputs, USB-C, Bluetooth LC3 and aptX Adaptive. Because these connection details are not fully confirmed in the available announcement material, verify the final specification for your region before relying on a particular wireless codec or jack configuration.
A reported weight of 345 g would make the player substantially heavier than a typical phone and reportedly about 118 g, or 52 percent, heavier than its predecessor. Those dimensions and weight remain leak-level information, so they should be treated as provisional when considering portability.

NW-ZX900 versus the older ZX707
The NW-ZX900 is a substantial step up in asking price from the ZX707, but the available material does not provide a current ZX707 price or a standardized, side-by-side battery or listening test. A sensible comparison should use the following criteria rather than assuming that a higher price automatically means audibly better performance.
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Price and availability | Current local ZX707 price versus the NW-ZX900’s official regional MSRP | Discounts on the older model can change the value calculation |
| Battery mode | Whether figures are local MP3 playback, high-resolution files or streaming | Different test modes are not directly interchangeable |
| Memory and software | Confirmed RAM, Android version and update policy | These affect app responsiveness and useful lifespan |
| Storage | Usable internal space, microSD support and card limits | Large lossless and DSD libraries consume storage quickly |
| Audio output | Balanced-output power and the actual DAC/amplifier implementation | Headphone matching matters more than a feature name alone |
| Portability | Verified dimensions and weight | A heavier player may be less convenient for daily carrying |
No independent listening comparison or standardized battery test is established in the available coverage. Claims that the NW-ZX900 necessarily sounds better or lasts exactly as long in normal use should wait for hands-on reviews.
Who should consider it?
- High-resolution music listeners: The confirmed DSD processing, S-Master HX amplification and balanced output fit a premium wired setup.
- Streaming users: The official streaming-runtime figure is relevant, but Android version, app support and wireless specifications should be verified before purchase.
- Large-library owners: The reported microSD slot could be important, while Sony’s approximately 33 GB available-space note makes expansion particularly relevant.
- Portable users: Wait for Sony’s final weight and dimensions if carrying comfort is a priority.
What to verify before ordering
- Confirm the delivery date and return terms shown for your country, since regional availability can differ.
- Check Sony’s final specification sheet for 8 GB RAM, Android 16, 1080p resolution, microSD limits and the reported wireless codecs.
- Match the player’s balanced output to headphones or IEMs that support a 4.4 mm connection; do not assume every headset benefits from balanced drive.
- Budget for removable storage only after confirming Sony’s supported card capacity and format.
- Compare the current ZX707 street price and warranty with the NW-ZX900’s official MSRP rather than relying on the earlier Japan leak.
Bottom line
The NW-ZX900 is no longer merely a leak: Sony has announced it and is accepting US pre-orders. Its strongest confirmed attractions are the premium audio architecture, balanced output, DSD processing and unusually long quoted playback figures. The value decision is less settled because 8 GB RAM, Android 16, 1080p resolution, microSD support, connectivity details and the 345 g chassis remain tied to leak reporting until Sony publishes a complete final specification.
