Choose the Sony ULT TOWER 5 if you want the lower purchase price and DJ-oriented XLR, RCA, and USB-C connections. Choose the Sony ULT TOWER 9 if you will use its castors, microphone and guitar inputs, TV Sound Booster, and longer manufacturer-stated runtime. Neither model can be declared the better-sounding speaker from Sony’s product information alone: the available pages describe features and estimates, not a controlled head-to-head listening test.
The practical choice is therefore about your venue, equipment, and moving requirements rather than a simple feature-count win. The comparison below uses Sony’s US product pages checked on October 13, 2026; prices and availability can change.
At a glance: the differences that affect your decision

In Sony’s US store snapshot from October 13, 2026, the ULT TOWER 5 was listed at $449.99 and the ULT TOWER 9 at $899.99. That makes the 9’s listed price twice the 5’s in that particular snapshot, but it does not establish a permanent market price. Sony promotions, retailer discounts, inventory, tax, and region can all change the amount you actually pay, so check the live listing before ordering.
#1 Best Overall
- MASSIVE BASS AND POWERFUL SOUND: The ULT TOWER MAX delivers deep bass, powerful sound pressure, and venue-filling audio designed for large gatherings, parties, and events. Co-created with professional hip-hop sound creators.
- READY FOR PARTIES, DJ SETS, AND KARAOKE: XLR, RCA, USB Type-C, and microphone inputs make it easy to connect DJ equipment, music sources, instruments, and karaoke accessories for almost any event.
- CUSTOMIZE YOUR SOUND: Choose ULT1 for deep bass, ULT2 for punchy bass, FLAT for balanced sound, or LIVE for a dynamic concert-like experience. For added flexibility, apply your own custom EQ on top of ULT1, ULT2, or FLAT to dial in the perfect sound for any occasion.
- SIMPLE CONTROLS: Front-facing ULT button allows you to switch sound modes by pushing and turn to adjust volume from the front of the speaker.
- DYNAMIC PARTY LIGHTING: Built-in synchronized lighting effects help transform living rooms, event spaces, DJ setups, and party venues into a more immersive experience.
The extra cost is easiest to justify when you can name a feature you will use repeatedly: rolling the speaker between rooms or venues, connecting a guitar as well as microphones, using TV Sound Booster, or valuing the longer stated battery estimate. If none of those apply, paying for them may not improve your experience. The Tower 5 already covers the core party-speaker brief with 360-degree sound, party lighting, and a selection of DJ-friendly inputs.
What the price difference does not prove
A higher price does not, by itself, prove that the Tower 9 is louder, clearer, or better sounding. Sony’s pages do not provide an independent comparative listening test, measured maximum output, frequency-response chart, or laboratory battery comparison for these two models. Treat promotional feature descriptions as specifications, not as evidence of a universal sonic winner.
Battery life: five extra claimed hours, not a guarantee
Sony lists up to 20 hours for the Tower 5 and up to 25 hours for the Tower 9. Those claims are not directly interchangeable test results: Sony specifies volume 17 for the 5 and volume 18 for the 9, while both conditions include ULT1/2 bass modes enabled and the lights switched off. The different volume settings are one reason not to interpret the figures as a precise five-hour real-world advantage.
Your result will depend on listening volume, the music being played, temperature, lighting, bass-mode use, wireless or wired operation, and how often the speaker is paused. Sony states on the Tower 5 page: “Actual performance may vary from the listed time due to the volume, songs played, surrounding temperature, and usage conditions.” The same practical caution applies when planning around the Tower 9 estimate.

- LONG BATTERY LIFE WITH QUICK CHARGING: Keep the party going with up to 25 hours of battery life, providing non-stop entertainment wherever you are. Quick charge: 10 minute charge gives you up to 180 minutes of playtime
- 10-BAND EQUALIZER: Customize your sound with the 10-band EQ, allowing you to adjust frequencies and hear your music exactly as you like it.
How to plan for an event
- Use the published number as an upper-bound planning reference, not as a promise that a fully charged unit will play continuously for that duration.
- Allow reserve time if the speaker will run at high volume, in cold or hot conditions, or with lighting enabled.
- Charge fully before a long event and identify a safe charging location rather than assuming the final percentage will remain predictable.
- If the event schedule is critical, test your own playlist, volume, lighting, and input setup in advance; no independent runtime measurement is established for this comparison.
Portability: carry handle versus handle plus castors
The Tower 5 is described as having a compact design and an integrated carry handle. That suits a person who can lift the speaker into position and generally leaves it there. The Tower 9 adds a carry handle and castors, which is the more relevant distinction for moving a tower repeatedly over suitable, reasonably smooth surfaces.
Castors do not make every move effortless. Stairs, gravel, thresholds, soft ground, and crowded spaces can still require lifting or a second person. Sony’s pages do not establish exact weight, wheel size, turning radius, or a maximum floor gradient, so avoid assuming the 9 can be rolled safely in every venue. Choose based on the route you actually need to travel, not merely on the presence of wheels.
Questions to ask about your venue
- Will one person need to move the speaker from storage to the listening area?
- Is the route mostly flat and hard-surfaced, or does it include steps and uneven ground?
- Will you reposition the speaker during an event, or only carry it once at setup?
- Can you keep the unit upright while moving and operating it?
If the answer to the first three questions points to frequent rolling on suitable floors, the Tower 9’s castors are a meaningful functional upgrade. For occasional setup by someone able to carry the unit, the Tower 5’s handle may be sufficient.

Inputs and live performance: match the connector to your equipment
Why the Tower 5 suits DJ-oriented setups
Sony highlights XLR, RCA, and USB-C inputs on the Tower 5 for DJ use and also mentions karaoke sessions. That combination is useful when your source equipment includes professional-style XLR output, consumer line-level RCA output, or a USB-C connection. Confirm the connector and signal requirements of your exact mixer, controller, phone, or computer before buying; the product description alone does not establish every input level, adapter requirement, or routing option.

- DEEP BASS AND POWERFUL SOUND: Powerful, floor-shaking bass and venue-filling sound help bring energy to large parties and events. Developed in collaboration with professional hip-hop sound creators.
- READY FOR PARTIES, DJ SETS, AND KARAOKE: XLR, RCA, USB Type-C, and microphone inputs make it easy to connect DJ equipment, laptops, music sources, microphones, and instruments for a wide range of events.
- CUSTOMIZE YOUR SOUND: Choose ULT1 for deep bass, ULT2 for punchy bass, FLAT for balanced sound, or LIVE for a concert-like listening experience. Layer your own custom EQ on top of ULT1, ULT2, or FLAT for even greater control.
- FRONT-FACING ULT BUTTON FOR SIMPLE CONTROL: Push to easily switch sound modes and turn to adjust volume directly from the front of the speaker. The illuminated ULT button syncs with the speaker lighting and provides visual feedback when adjusting volume.
- UP TO 30 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE: Keep the music going with long-lasting battery life and get up to 180 minutes of playback from just 10 minutes of charging when you need a quick boost.
The Tower 5 is the clearer choice when your purchase decision starts with a DJ connection checklist. It lets you prioritize the ports you already use instead of buying adapters or changing your workflow simply to accommodate the speaker.
Why the Tower 9 suits karaoke and guitar
The Tower 9 is described with microphone and guitar inputs for karaoke and live performance. That makes it the more natural fit for a singer who wants to plug in a microphone and an instrumentalist who needs a guitar connection at the speaker. As with the Tower 5, Sony’s page does not spell out every electrical specification or control arrangement, so verify compatibility with your particular microphone, pickup, cable, and any required preamp.
Do not select the Tower 9 merely because it has more inputs in the abstract. Select it when microphone-and-guitar use is central to the event. Conversely, do not assume its live-performance inputs replace the DJ-oriented XLR, RCA, and USB-C workflow you may already have; the two models are promoted around different use cases.

TV Sound Booster: the Tower 9’s distinctive home-theater mode
The Tower 9 includes TV Sound Booster, a mode not established for the Tower 5 on the reviewed Sony page. Sony says the mode is designed to optimize combined TV output, but activating it disables four front-side speaker components: two tweeters and two mid-range speakers. That is an explicit trade-off, not a free increase in every aspect of playback.

This feature matters if you want one battery-powered party tower to serve as a television audio system as well as an event speaker. It is less compelling if the speaker will stay in a DJ, karaoke, or outdoor-party role. Before paying for the 9, decide whether you will actually connect it to a TV and accept the component behavior while TV Sound Booster is active.
How to evaluate the mode for your room
- Identify where the TV and speaker will sit and whether a wireless or wired connection supported by your equipment is practical.
- Check whether dialogue clarity and room coverage are your primary goals, rather than maximum party-style output.
- Remember that four front-side components are disabled in the mode, so compare the TV-mode presentation with your normal speaker mode for your own room.
- Keep the feature in context: it is a reason to choose the Tower 9 only if TV use is a genuine requirement.
Sound coverage and lighting: similar party brief, different emphasis
Both models are presented with 360-degree Party Sound, so Sony’s intended use is broad party coverage rather than a narrowly aimed listening position. Both also include lighting intended to support a party atmosphere. The Tower 5 is described with built-in Party Lights, while the Tower 9 is described with 360-degree Party Lights.
The wording does not establish that one model sounds better, reaches a higher measured volume, or produces more accurate bass. Room size, placement, walls, music, listening distance, and volume will influence what you hear. Without independent controlled measurements, the responsible distinction is feature emphasis: the Tower 5 provides the party fundamentals at the lower listed price, while the Tower 9 adds mobility, live-input flexibility, TV mode, and a longer stated runtime.
Lighting and battery planning
Sony’s headline battery figures for both models specify the lights off. If visual effects are part of your event, expect actual runtime to differ from those maximum claims. Treat lighting as an operating choice to balance against the time you need the speaker to remain unplugged.

Water resistance: useful splash protection with strict conditions
The Tower 5 page gives an IPX4 condition: the ports and covers must be firmly closed and the unit must remain vertical. The Tower 9 page similarly says splash resistance requires the ports and covers to be firmly closed. These statements support protection from splashes under the stated conditions; they do not make either speaker waterproof.
- Close every relevant cover before exposure to splashes.
- Keep the tower upright as required for the Tower 5’s stated IPX4 condition.
- Do not submerge either model or treat it as suitable for rain that exceeds the manufacturer’s stated protection.
- Dry the exterior and inspect covers before reconnecting cables or charging.
Outdoor use should therefore be planned around shelter, upright placement, and quick protection from worsening weather rather than around an assumption that the speaker can be left exposed.
Which model fits common buying situations?
Choose the ULT TOWER 5 for a lower-cost DJ and party setup
The Tower 5 is the better match when the budget is the first constraint and your equipment uses XLR, RCA, or USB-C. Its compact design and carry handle are appropriate when you can lift the unit into place, and its party sound and integrated lights cover the basic event requirement. Sony’s up-to-20-hour claim can be useful for planning, provided you account for the stated test conditions and real-world variation.

The Tower 9 earns its premium when castors solve a real transport problem, when microphone and guitar inputs are central to your performance, or when TV Sound Booster is a feature you will use. Its up-to-25-hour manufacturer claim is the longer of the two, but it remains an estimate under specified conditions rather than a guaranteed five-hour extension in your event.
When neither model is an obvious fit
Pause before buying if your main requirement is a measured loudness target, a verified sound-quality ranking, exact weight limits, or a particular professional input specification that Sony’s pages do not state. Those decisions require information beyond this comparison. Likewise, if you need waterproof operation or regular use on stairs and rough ground, neither product description supplies evidence that would justify assuming those capabilities.
A practical buying checklist
- Set the real budget. Use the live Sony or retailer price for your region; the October 13, 2026 US figures are snapshots and can change.
- List your source equipment. Mark whether you need XLR, RCA, USB-C, a microphone input, or a guitar input, then compare that list with the model descriptions.
- Map the moving route. Decide whether a carry handle is adequate or whether castors will be used across suitable floors.
- Decide whether TV audio is a requirement. If yes, account for the four front-side components disabled by TV Sound Booster.
- Plan battery conservatively. Start from Sony’s “up to” estimate, then allow for higher volume, lights, temperature, music, and pauses.
- Check weather exposure. Keep covers closed, follow the Tower 5’s upright requirement, and never plan for immersion.
- Verify availability and accessories. Confirm the current model, regional warranty, cables, stands, and any adapters needed for your equipment before checkout.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the 9 because it is more expensive. Price is not independent evidence of superior sound.
- Reading “up to” as guaranteed runtime. The published conditions differ in volume and exclude lights.
- Assuming castors solve every transport problem. Stairs, rough surfaces, and crowded routes can still require lifting.
- Assuming all inputs are interchangeable. XLR, RCA, USB-C, microphone, and guitar connections serve different equipment; verify your signal path.
- Leaving covers open outdoors. The stated splash protection depends on closed covers, and the Tower 5 also specifies upright operation.
- Expecting TV Sound Booster to activate every speaker component. Sony documents that two tweeters and two mid-range speakers are disabled in that mode.
- Calling either model waterproof. The published protection statements do not support immersion or unrestricted exposure.
Final decision
Buy the ULT TOWER 5 when the lower listed price, compact carry design, and XLR/RCA/USB-C DJ connections solve your main problem. Buy the ULT TOWER 9 when castors, microphone-and-guitar use, TV Sound Booster, and the longer stated battery estimate are worth paying for. If your deciding factor is which one sounds better, the available Sony information is not enough to answer that responsibly; choose on the concrete features you will use.
