There is no evidence-based universal winner. Choose the Sony ULT TOWER 5 if you need the broadest wired connectivity, including RCA and balanced XLR, or you value its longer advertised single-charge runtime. Choose the JBL PartyBox Club 120 if a replaceable battery, karaoke-oriented inputs, app-controlled lighting and a smaller enclosure matter more. Both are IPX4 splash-resistant speakers, but neither is designed for immersion.

Sound is the least decisive difference. Existing coverage of this exact pair consists of subjective first impressions rather than a level-matched or instrumented test, so room, placement and personal taste can outweigh the brand name. Audition both when possible.

What the two speakers are

These are not equivalent in every design decision. Sony concentrates on connection flexibility and a long rated runtime, while JBL puts more emphasis on replaceable power, karaoke and its PartyBox ecosystem.

Prices and availability: compare your local listings

Sony Electronics’ United States product page lists the ULT TOWER 5 at $449.99. Sony’s September 1, 2026 launch announcement says the speaker became available in September 2026 at a suggested U.S. retail price of $449.99 and names Amazon among authorized dealers. Those are U.S. figures; Sony states that specifications and availability can change.

The cited JBL listing is regional. JBL India displayed a ₹24,999 sale price against a ₹39,999 MRP on a page accessed October 13, 2026. That is an India-market offer, not a global MSRP or a U.S. price. A direct comparison that calls the JBL less expensive should therefore be read as a general market observation, not a same-country, same-date calculation.

Before buying, check the current listing for your country, whether tax and delivery are included, the supplied plug and warranty region, and whether the replacement battery or microphones are stocked locally. A temporary sale can change the value calculation without changing the hardware.

Battery and long-event planning

Sony’s 20-hour claim

Sony advertises up to 20 hours of battery life. TechRadar specifies that its quoted figure applies with the lights turned off. Sony also provides a Stamina mode: it extends operating time by reducing or disabling the lighting and ULT POWER SOUND effects. The 20-hour figure is a rated claim, not a result from a matched test against JBL.

For a party using lighting and bass-enhancement effects, expect the useful runtime to be lower than the headline number. Treat the advertised figure as a best-case planning reference and bring mains power for an event where music cannot stop.

JBL’s 12-hour claim and replaceable battery

JBL advertises up to 12 hours of playtime for the Club 120. Its defining battery advantage is serviceability: JBL says the battery is replaceable, and an extra battery is sold separately. A second battery can turn a long event into a swap-and-continue schedule, provided it is charged and available for the exact regional model.

JBL Australia identifies a compatible spare called BATTERY200, but stock and compatibility vary by country. Confirm the part number with your local Club 120 listing before purchasing; do not assume an accessory sold in one region is included or officially supported in another.

What the figures do not tell you

  • Neither manufacturer’s “up to” number is a controlled comparison performed under identical volume, lighting and equalizer settings.
  • Higher volume, bass-heavy material, wireless use and lighting generally consume more energy than conservative playback.
  • Sony’s materials do not establish whether the ULT TOWER 5 battery is user-replaceable. Do not plan a field swap unless Sony’s current support documentation for your region confirms it.

Connections and source flexibility

Sony ULT TOWER 5

The connections listed for Sony include XLR, RCA, USB-C, USB-A and a 6.3 mm microphone input. That combination is unusually useful when the speaker must accept a mixer, DJ controller, line-level source, instrument or wired microphone without additional adapters. Bluetooth 5.3 is also listed by TechRadar for wireless playback.

XLR and RCA are especially relevant to a small PA or DJ setup: you can keep a balanced microphone or mixer connection available while using another source. USB ports add options for compatible playback or charging tasks, but confirm the manual’s supported formats and power limits before relying on a particular USB workflow.

JBL PartyBox Club 120

JBL highlights two microphone inputs and a guitar input, making the Club 120 immediately suited to karaoke, announcements and casual live accompaniment. The PartyBox app adds remote control, while Auracast allows supported multi-speaker connections. Two Club 120 units can be stereo-paired.

The practical distinction is not that one speaker has “more Bluetooth,” but that Sony publishes a wider mix of physical line and PA connections, whereas JBL clearly organizes its feature set around performers, app control and PartyBox-to-PartyBox expansion.

Which is better for common setups?

House parties and backyard music

Pick Sony when the speaker will sit near a DJ table, mixer or several wired sources, or when reducing charging interruptions is the priority. Its rated runtime gives more headroom, especially if you can run with lighting off.

Pick JBL when the event is primarily phone-driven and visual atmosphere matters. The customizable light effects and app control make changes easier from across the room, and the replaceable battery is useful for gatherings that run beyond one charge.

Karaoke and announcements

The Club 120 is the more direct karaoke choice because JBL specifically provides dual microphone inputs and a guitar input. Two singers can connect without building a separate mixer-based signal chain. A JBL PartyBox Wireless Mic is an optional accessory, not an included item, and availability depends on the market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony can still serve karaoke or announcements through its 6.3 mm microphone input and a suitable wired source, but the published specifications do not establish the same two-microphone convenience. If two vocalists are central to the event, count the number of inputs before considering sound preferences.

DJ, small PA and instruments

The ULT TOWER 5 is the safer fit for a compact DJ or PA rig because its listed XLR and RCA connections accommodate common mixer and source outputs, while the microphone input covers a presenter or vocalist. Verify the output levels and cable requirements of your equipment before the event.

The Club 120 makes sense for a simpler guitar-and-vocal performance or a phone-backed sing-along. Its published feature set does not provide the same breadth of line-connection options described for Sony, so a more elaborate rig may require extra hardware.

Outdoor use

Both speakers carry an IPX4 rating in the cited materials. JBL describes the Club 120 as splashproof; Sony’s announcement qualifies the ULT TOWER 5 rating as applying when the speaker is in a vertical position. IPX4 protects against splashing water from any direction under test conditions; it is not a submersion rating.

Use either speaker under cover during sustained rain, keep connectors closed, and never place it where runoff can pool. Sony’s orientation qualification matters if you intend to tilt or lay the tower down. Moisture resistance also does not protect against sand, dust or impact damage beyond what the manufacturer separately specifies.

Moving the speaker often

TechRadar lists the Sony at 28 lb (12.7 kg). That is manageable for one person over short distances but substantial enough to influence stairs, vehicle loading and setup frequency. Published comparisons describe the JBL as smaller, which can make it the easier choice for compact rooms or frequent transport, although the cited material does not establish a single standardized size-and-weight comparison.

Sound quality: what can and cannot be concluded

Recent hands-on coverage of the Sony is positive but subjective. An exact-pair comparison describes the Sony as having deeper bass and clear playback, yet labels those observations as first impressions rather than measurements. Other reviews vary in tonal judgment. There is no controlled direct listening test that level-matches these two models and measures frequency response, maximum output or distortion under the same conditions.

That means you should not treat either brand as the objective sound winner. Large party speakers change character with distance, room reflections, placement near walls and the chosen bass mode. The ULT effects may appeal if you want a stronger low-end presentation; JBL’s tuning and lighting may suit a different room or playlist. Those are listening preferences, not established performance rankings.

When auditioning, use the same familiar tracks, equalize conservatively, set comparable loudness and listen both near the speaker and at the intended audience distance. Check vocal intelligibility at party volume, bass control near walls and whether the lighting or enhancement modes alter the balance you prefer.

Networking, lighting and expansion

JBL PartyBox ecosystem

JBL’s app lets you control the Club 120 and customize its light effects. Auracast support is designed for connecting multiple compatible speakers, while two Club 120 units can be stereo-paired. These features favor buyers who expect to add another PartyBox later or want lighting scenes controlled from a phone.

Confirm that every speaker in a planned multi-speaker group supports the same connection method and current firmware. Wireless expansion can introduce setup delay or synchronization limits in a crowded environment, so test the arrangement before guests arrive.

Sony’s ULT presentation

Sony combines lighting with its ULT POWER SOUND effects and offers Stamina mode when runtime matters more than those effects. The cited materials do not establish a comparable Auracast network or a replaceable-battery ecosystem for the ULT TOWER 5. Choose it for its inputs and standalone operation rather than assuming cross-brand multi-speaker compatibility.

A practical buying decision

  1. List every source. Write down phones, mixers, microphones, guitars, instruments and USB devices. If you need XLR or RCA, Sony’s published connections are the deciding advantage.
  2. Count performers. Two simultaneous microphones point toward JBL’s dual-mic design. A single wired microphone can be handled by either speaker with the appropriate cable and setup.
  3. Estimate event duration. For a single charge, Sony’s rated figure is higher but qualified by lighting settings. For continuous operation with a spare power pack, JBL’s replaceable battery is the more explicit plan.
  4. Check transport. Include the Sony’s listed 28 lb weight, stairs and vehicle space in your decision. Favor the smaller JBL package if one person will move it repeatedly.
  5. Decide whether lighting is central. JBL offers app customization; Sony offers integrated lighting with ULT effects and a Stamina mode that sacrifices them for endurance.
  6. Verify weather exposure. Treat both IPX4 ratings as splash protection only, and observe Sony’s vertical-position qualification.
  7. Audition before judging sound. Because no controlled exact-pair test establishes a winner, listen with your own music at the volume and placement you will actually use.
  8. Recheck regional pricing and accessories. Sony’s cited price is U.S.-specific, while the cited JBL prices are India-specific and time-sensitive. Confirm local warranty, battery and microphone availability.

Setup checklists

For a Sony DJ or PA setup

  • Place the tower vertically and keep it under cover outdoors.
  • Connect a mixer or line source through the appropriate XLR or RCA input.
  • Use the 6.3 mm microphone input for a wired microphone, checking gain before raising the master volume.
  • Disable lighting and use Stamina mode when the event prioritizes the longest possible runtime.
  • Secure cables so guests cannot pull the speaker or trip over the connections.

For a JBL karaoke setup

  • Charge the Club 120 and, for a long event, charge the separately purchased compatible replacement battery.
  • Connect microphones to the two microphone inputs and a guitar to the guitar input if required.
  • Use the PartyBox app to select lighting effects and manage playback.
  • Pair a second Club 120 in advance if stereo output is part of the plan.
  • Keep the speaker sheltered from sustained rain despite its IPX4 splashproof rating.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing unlike prices: ₹24,999 on an India sale page cannot be directly compared with $449.99 in the United States.
  • Planning around the maximum runtime: both figures are “up to” claims; Sony’s 20-hour figure is reported with lights off, and real use varies with volume and effects.
  • Assuming IPX4 means waterproof: neither product is rated for submersion.
  • Assuming accessories are included: JBL’s extra battery and optional wireless microphone are separate purchases.
  • Expecting a measured sound verdict: published exact-pair listening notes are subjective first impressions, not an instrumented comparison.
  • Ignoring regional support: confirm battery part numbers, plugs, firmware, warranty and stock in your country.
  • Tilting Sony outdoors without checking the rating condition: Sony’s IPX4 statement is explicitly tied to vertical orientation.

Bottom line

Buy the Sony ULT TOWER 5 for wired-source flexibility, DJ or small-PA duties and the higher advertised single-charge figure, accepting that its 20-hour claim is associated with lights-off use and that its battery replacement status is not established in the cited materials. Buy the JBL PartyBox Club 120 for karaoke, app-controlled lighting, PartyBox networking, a smaller package and a documented battery-swap option. Neither is a proven sound-quality champion; your inputs, event length, transport needs and listening preference should decide.
