On the Sony ULT TOWER 5 (model SRS-ULT500), choose among ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, and LIVE, then use the Sony | Sound Connect app for the speaker’s custom 10-band equalizer. The front ULT button is the physical control Sony identifies for sound-mode and volume functions, while LIVE can also be selected or assigned in Sound Connect. If an EQ boost will not increase, lower the speaker’s volume first: Sony prevents increases when the speaker is already at maximum output.
What you can change on the ULT TOWER 5
Sony documents four selectable sound modes for the SRS-ULT500: ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, and LIVE. The official specification and product pages confirm the mode names, but they do not publish a measured frequency curve, decibel boost, or a technical description that establishes exactly how ULT1 differs from ULT2. Treat those two modes as listening choices rather than as documented bass specifications.
The speaker has two separate adjustment layers:
- Mode selection: use the speaker’s front ULT control for the available sound modes. Sony describes that control as a sound-mode and volume control.
- Equalization: use the Sony | Sound Connect smartphone app. Sony lists a custom EQ with 10 bands for this model.
The current app interface, firmware behavior, and physical-button sequence can change. Sony’s product page confirms that LIVE can be selected or assigned with Sound Connect, but it does not specify a press-count or long-press sequence. Do not rely on an assumed number of presses; check the current SRS-ULT500 Help Guide and manuals for the behavior shown for your firmware.

Documented modes and the safest way to compare them
| Mode | What Sony’s available documentation establishes | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| ULT1 | Selectable sound mode on the SRS-ULT500. | Listen to it with the same track and volume as the other modes; the cited pages do not establish a specific bass curve. |
| ULT2 | Selectable sound mode on the SRS-ULT500. | Compare by ear rather than assuming it is a quantified “deeper” or “punchier” setting. |
| FLAT | Selectable sound mode on the SRS-ULT500. | Useful as a neutral reference point for judging what a mode or EQ change is doing; “neutral” here is a listening workflow, not a published response measurement. |
| LIVE | Selectable mode; Sony says it can be selected or assigned using Sound Connect. | Use the app if you want LIVE available through the app or assigned to the ULT control. |
The mode names and 10-band EQ are listed by Sony on its SRS-ULT500 specifications page and the ULT TOWER 5 product page. Neither page supplies a laboratory comparison of the four modes.

Before changing a setting
- Make sure the speaker is powered on and connected to the phone that has Sony | Sound Connect installed.
- Keep the speaker at a moderate listening level while you compare modes. This gives you room to raise or lower the EQ later and avoids confusing a louder signal with a better tonal balance.
- Use one familiar track with a steady vocal, bass, and percussion section. Change only one control at a time so you can identify whether the mode or the EQ made the difference.
- Note the starting mode and any existing EQ adjustments. If the result becomes confusing, return to FLAT and a neutral EQ position before beginning another comparison.
These are repeatability steps, not requirements for the speaker to operate. They simply make an audible comparison more reliable.
How to select a ULT mode on the speaker
The front-facing ULT control is the physical control Sony assigns to sound-mode and volume functions. Sony’s public product information does not state the exact sequence of short presses, long presses, or indicator behavior, so a responsible procedure cannot specify a universal “press it twice” instruction.
- Locate the button marked ULT on the speaker’s front control area.
- Use the button in the manner shown for your unit in the current SRS-ULT500 Help Guide. Watch the speaker’s indicators or listen for the mode-change feedback described there.
- After each mode change, play the same passage at the same volume. Record whether you prefer ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, or LIVE for that type of content.
- If the button changes volume instead of mode, stop repeating presses and consult the Help Guide for the control’s assigned operation and any lock or app-assignment setting.
Do not infer a technical bass ranking from the order in which the modes appear. The accessible Sony pages identify the choices but do not quantify their low-frequency response.
Use Sound Connect to select or assign LIVE
Sony specifically says LIVE can be selected or assigned through the Sony | Sound Connect app. Because menu names and locations may differ by app version, use the current on-screen labels rather than an older tap sequence.

- Open Sony | Sound Connect on the smartphone paired with the SRS-ULT500.
- Select the connected speaker in the app’s device view.
- Open the speaker’s sound, mode, or control section and look for the mode selector. The exact label and location are subject to change.
- Choose LIVE if you want to audition it, or use the app’s control-assignment option if you want LIVE associated with the ULT control.
- Play your reference track and confirm that the speaker remains connected while you compare the result.
If you cannot find a mode-assignment option, update Sound Connect and check the current Sony Help Guide listing. The manuals page lists a Help Guide release dated September 18, 2026; the exact instructions should come from that guide for the software and firmware you are using.
Adjust the 10-band custom EQ in Sound Connect
Sony documents a custom equalizer with 10 bands for the SRS-ULT500. The official pages do not publish the current app’s exact menu labels or tap-by-tap navigation, so the reliable instruction is to use the speaker’s equalizer control in Sound Connect and follow the labels displayed by your version.
- Launch Sound Connect and connect to the SRS-ULT500.
- Open the connected speaker’s sound controls.
- Select the equalizer or custom-EQ control. If the app presents preset and custom choices, select the custom option to expose the adjustable bands.
- Change one band at a time in a small increment, then replay the same section of music.
- Stop when the change solves the problem you were correcting. Large simultaneous boosts make it difficult to identify the cause of harshness, muddiness, or reduced headroom.
- Save or apply the setting using the control shown in the current app, then check the speaker again after switching tracks.
The 10-band count is a product specification, not a promise that every phone or app release will display identical labels. If your screen differs from an older guide, use the current app interface and the model-specific Help Guide instead of forcing a sequence meant for another version.
A controlled bass-adjustment workflow
“More bass” can mean a stronger low-end impact, clearer kick drum, or less distracting mid-bass. The ULT TOWER 5 documentation does not provide measured curves for ULT1 or ULT2, so use this process to find the setting that fits your room and program material without claiming a technical difference Sony has not published.

1. Establish a reference
Set the speaker to FLAT and leave the custom EQ at its neutral position. Play a familiar track containing bass, vocals, and high-frequency detail. This gives you a repeatable reference before adding coloration.
2. Compare ULT1 and ULT2 at equal loudness
Select ULT1 and ULT2 using the documented control method for your unit. Keep the volume unchanged while switching. Choose the mode that sounds preferable for your material; do not label one as a specific decibel increase because no such figure is supplied in the cited Sony pages.
3. Use the EQ for smaller corrections
After choosing a mode, return to Sound Connect and adjust only the bands needed for your goal. A small low-frequency change may be enough; if vocals become recessed or percussion becomes sharp, undo the last change rather than adding boosts everywhere.

4. Recheck at the volume you normally use
Sound can seem fuller when it is louder. Confirm the setting at your normal listening level and with a second track before keeping it as your everyday configuration.

Practical starting points for common listening goals
These are listening methods, not Sony-certified presets. They avoid inventing frequency values while giving you a way to make a decision.
- Maximum low-end emphasis: audition ULT1 and ULT2 first, then make the smallest EQ adjustment that adds the impact you want. Stop if vocals lose clarity.
- Balanced music: begin with FLAT, compare the same track at equal volume, and add only a modest custom-EQ change if the room or placement calls for it.
- Live-sounding presentation: audition LIVE and compare it directly with your preferred ULT mode. If you want quick access, assign LIVE in Sound Connect where that option is available.
- Clearer speech or vocals: start from FLAT, reduce any EQ change that masks the vocal range, and verify with spoken content as well as music.
Because Sony does not publish a frequency-response chart for these mode choices in the cited material, the final selection is necessarily preference-based.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why an EQ boost may not work at maximum volume
The most important troubleshooting rule comes from Sony’s model-specific support article. Sony states: “If the speaker is already set to maximum volume, the device is already operating at its output limit.” It also says: “To protect the speaker, pressing + (plus) will not increase the equalizer setting. However, you can still decrease this setting with – (minus).” Read the complete guidance at Sony Support’s maximum-volume article.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Lower the speaker’s volume from maximum.
- Return to the EQ control in Sound Connect.
- Increase the desired band in a small step.
- Raise the volume again only after the EQ adjustment has been accepted, and stop below the point where the speaker refuses further increases.
If the EQ can be reduced but not increased, that behavior matches Sony’s protection rule rather than indicating a defective equalizer.

If a mode or EQ change seems ineffective
The speaker sounds unchanged after a mode switch
- Confirm that the app or physical control is operating the SRS-ULT500, not another nearby Sony device.
- Use a track with sustained bass and percussion; a sparse recording may not expose a difference.
- Compare at equal volume and return to FLAT before repeating the test.
- Check the Help Guide for the indicator or confirmation behavior associated with your firmware, since the public product page does not define the button sequence.
The EQ control is missing
- Verify that Sound Connect shows the SRS-ULT500 as the connected speaker.
- Look in the connected speaker’s sound-control area for equalizer or custom-EQ controls.
- Update the app if its controls appear incomplete, then consult the model-specific manuals page for firmware-dependent instructions.
The change sounds harsh or muddy
- Undo the last adjustment and change only one band at a time.
- Check the result with vocals and percussion, not only a bass-heavy passage.
- Try FLAT as a reference before deciding whether the mode or the EQ is responsible.
The setting does not remain as expected
- Use the app’s explicit save or apply control if one is shown.
- Reopen the speaker page and verify the displayed mode and EQ after reconnecting.
- Check for app or firmware updates and follow the current Help Guide rather than an instruction written for an earlier release.
A repeatable setup checklist
- Connect the SRS-ULT500 to Sound Connect.
- Record the initial mode and EQ position.
- Use FLAT as a reference, then audition ULT1, ULT2, and LIVE at the same volume.
- Choose the mode that suits the track without assuming an undocumented technical bass difference.
- Open the custom 10-band EQ and make one small adjustment.
- Check the result at normal listening volume and with another track.
- If an EQ increase is blocked, lower the speaker volume before trying again.
- Save or apply the setting using the current app controls.
- Record the final mode and EQ positions so you can restore them after experimenting.
What the official specifications do—and do not—tell you
Sony’s specifications identify the custom EQ as 10-band and list the four sound modes. They do not provide a graph showing the response of ULT1 versus ULT2, a numerical bass boost, or a universal description of how LIVE changes frequency balance. Sony’s product marketing uses general deep-bass language, but that is not a measured comparison.
The SRS-ULT500 is listed at approximately 28 lb on Sony’s USA support specification page. That physical figure is not a sound-setting requirement and does not determine which mode or EQ you should use.
App menus, firmware behavior, regional availability, and program terms can change. For button behavior or a control that is absent from your app, use the latest model-specific material on Sony’s SRS-ULT500 manuals page.

Karaoke note: the microphone is separate
If you are adjusting sound for karaoke, Sony notes that a microphone is sold separately. The microphone is not needed for changing ULT modes or the custom EQ, so leave it out of the setup unless you are using the speaker’s microphone features. The product information is available on the ULT TOWER 5 product page.
Bottom line for choosing your settings
Use the physical ULT control and the current Help Guide to move among ULT1, ULT2, FLAT, and LIVE; use Sound Connect for LIVE assignment and the 10-band custom EQ. Compare modes at equal volume, make small EQ changes, and treat the choice between ULT1 and ULT2 as a listening preference because Sony’s cited documentation does not publish a quantified bass difference. When an EQ boost is unavailable, lower the speaker from maximum volume before trying again.
