For a premium movie-focused Sony TV, start by comparing the 2025 BRAVIA 8 II QD-OLED with the 2025 BRAVIA 5 Mini LED. Sony lists Dolby Vision and HDR10 support for the BRAVIA 8 II; the BRAVIA 5 is a different display class to consider alongside your budget, room, screen-size needs and playback setup. These are feature-based starting points, not a universal performance ranking.
Which Sony TV is a good starting point for movies?
The 2025 BRAVIA 8 II is the premium movie-first starting point in this comparison. Sony identifies it as a QD-OLED Google TV and lists 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10, IMAX Enhanced compatibility and Acoustic Surface Audio+. Those are product features, not independent measurements of picture or sound quality.
If you want to compare a different display type, consider the 2025 BRAVIA 5. Sony describes it as a Mini LED TV with 4K HDR, XR Backlight Master Drive and XR Triluminos Pro. The official feature information establishes what each model offers, but does not support declaring OLED or Mini LED the better choice for every room or viewer.
BRAVIA 8 II and BRAVIA 5 compared
| Model | What Sony lists | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| BRAVIA 8 II (2025) | QD-OLED; 4K HDR; Dolby Vision and HDR10; IMAX Enhanced compatibility; Acoustic Surface Audio+ | Budget, available screen size, room lighting, HDR services and whether you plan to use external audio |
| BRAVIA 5 (2025) | Mini LED; 4K HDR; XR Backlight Master Drive; XR Triluminos Pro | Budget, available screen size, room lighting, content and HDR needs |
Choose by the combination that matters in your home rather than by display label alone: compare the actual price and size, how bright the room is during viewing, which services and formats you use, and whether the TV’s built-in sound meets your needs.

Check the whole HDR playback chain
A TV’s format support does not guarantee that a particular film will play in that format. Sony Support says the app or streaming service must support Dolby Vision, and compatibility can also depend on the TV model, input and connected device. An HDMI source may need a software update. Check the requirements for the exact TV and playback source before relying on Dolby Vision: Sony’s HDR format compatibility guidance.
Verify model year, size and current offer
Sony’s current U.S. television lineup includes 2026 models as well as 2025 and older products. Confirm the full model name and year when comparing listings or reviews; similar line names do not make models from different years interchangeable. Check the exact size, current price, stock and delivery terms for the model you want, since retailer listings and promotions can change.

Sony promotes Sony Pictures Core benefits with BRAVIA TVs, but movie credits and included streaming periods are conditional on model eligibility, registration and offer terms. Read the current terms for the exact model rather than treating a promotion as a guaranteed feature.
Decide whether you need external audio
Sony lists Acoustic Surface Audio+ on the BRAVIA 8 II and promotes surround-sound options across its TV range. If you plan to add a soundbar or other home-theater equipment, verify compatibility with the exact television and the features you intend to use. A general note that products are compatible with a BRAVIA line does not establish that every soundbar supports every TV feature.
