If you want an alternative to Sony’s HT-S40R, start by deciding whether you need separate rear speakers or just a soundbar that processes surround effects. The four non-Sony models below have manufacturer-documented configurations relevant to that choice, but the available information does not support a verified nine-product ranking or a single current price list. Product availability and exact package contents vary by market, so check the model suffix and local listing before buying.

First, decide what “Sony surround sound” means for your setup

The Sony HT-S40R is a 5.1 system with rear speakers. Sony India’s specification page lists a wired subwoofer. It is a useful reference if your priority is speakers behind the listening position, rather than surround effects generated mainly from the front of the room. Sony’s US page showed a price of $329.99 and marked the product no longer available; Sony India lists an MRP of ₹34,990. Those are different regional listings, not directly comparable current prices. Sony US HT-S40R page; Sony India HT-S40R specifications.

Do not assume that a channel count or an audio-format logo tells you whether rear speakers are included. Check the box contents for the exact regional model. Sony’s HT-S2000, for example, is a 3.1-channel Dolby Atmos bar. Sony describes its Vertical Surround Engine and S-Force PRO Front Surround as ways to create surround effects; that is a different kind of package from a system with separate rear speakers. Its US product page also marks it no longer available. Sony US HT-S2000 page.

Four non-Sony alternatives with documented configurations

The table separates what manufacturer pages establish from what they do not. Specifications describe supported features and listed components; they do not guarantee how convincing a system will sound in every room.

LG S65TR LG India lists a 5.1 system with subwoofer and rear speakers, 600 W, and Dolby Digital. Someone seeking a package with separate rear speakers. The cited information is for LG India’s product page and regional variant; confirm local availability and box contents. LG India S65TR.
Samsung HW-B67EF/XL Samsung India lists 5.1, Dolby Audio, DTS Virtual:X, and 490 W. Someone considering a Samsung soundbar with processed surround effects or compatible-TV integration. Q-Symphony requires specified compatible Samsung TV models. It does not mean the package has separate up-firing speakers. Confirm the exact TV compatibility and included components. Samsung India HW-B67EF/XL.
Hisense AX5125H Hisense UK lists 5.1.2, 500 W, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X. Someone looking for Atmos and DTS:X support in a multi-channel package. Confirm exact box contents and local price; the cited page is for the UK model. Hisense UK AX5125H.
JBL Bar 500MK2 JBL lists 5.1, Dolby Atmos, DTS Virtual:X, and a wireless 10-inch subwoofer. Someone who wants a soundbar-and-subwoofer package with virtual surround features. The cited specifications do not establish that separate rear speakers are included. Check the package contents rather than inferring them from “5.1.” JBL Bar 500MK2.

How to choose the right type, not just the biggest channel number

If you want sound from behind you

Prioritize a listing that explicitly includes rear speakers. The LG S65TR’s India page documents rear speakers, as does Sony’s HT-S40R reference configuration. For any model, verify whether the rear units are included, how they connect, and whether the cited product page matches the version sold in your country. A 5.1 label by itself is not proof that the box contains physical rear speakers.

If you want Atmos or DTS:X support

Hisense lists Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for the AX5125H; JBL lists Dolby Atmos for the Bar 500MK2. Format support is one factor, not a promise of height effects in every room. Also check whether your television and connected sources can pass the audio formats you intend to use, and whether the connection you plan to use supports your setup.

  • Feel every note with a 600W power output
  • Get the best seat in the house with 5.1ch real surround sound
  • Rear speakers deliver powerful surround sound to complete your home cinema experience

  • Wireless connectivity for music streaming

If your television is a Samsung

The HW-B67EF/XL may be worth considering if you have a compatible Samsung TV and want to use Q-Symphony. Samsung’s compatibility condition matters: the feature is not a universal benefit across all televisions, and it should not be confused with discrete height speakers.

Check connections, placement, and local listing details

Before choosing a model, compare the equipment you own with the exact product listing. Manufacturer feature pages establish some supported formats and components, but the cited product details do not establish every connection requirement across markets. Confirm the available HDMI, eARC, or optical connections on both the soundbar and TV, and check that your intended audio source can use the connection and format combination.

Sony BRAVIA Theater Quad 16-Speaker Home Theater Audio System HT-A9M2
  • UNLEASH THE FULL POTENTIAL OF SURROUND SOUND: Hear cinema-style surround sound all around you with 360 Spatial Sound Mapping.
  • ROOM OPTIMIZED SOUND: Sound is auto calibrated to your room’s characteristics with Sound Field Optimization.
  • SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Supports industry-standard formats including Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and IMAX Enhanced.
  • INNOVATIVE ACOUSTIC DESIGN: With 16 speaker units, hear exceptional acoustic performance and precise room filling spatial audio.
  • WIRELESS SPEAKERS: Position the four wireless speakers virtually anywhere in the room for total flexibility.
  • Box contents: Confirm rear speakers, subwoofer, cables, and any required transmitter or control unit are actually included in the local package.
  • Subwoofer setup: Check whether the subwoofer is wired or wireless and whether its placement and cable route work in your room. Sony India specifies a wired subwoofer for the HT-S40R; JBL lists a wireless subwoofer for the Bar 500MK2.
  • Room layout: Separate rear speakers need suitable positions around the listening area. A compact bar avoids that placement requirement but may rely more on processing for surround impressions.
  • Exact model and region: Match the suffix on the seller’s listing to the manufacturer’s regional page. Specs, included parts, availability, and warranty terms can differ by market.

Why these are not a nine-product price ranking

The available price examples are snapshots from separate markets and dates, not a comparable shopping basket. Sony US listed the HT-S40R at $329.99 while marking it no longer available; Sony India lists ₹34,990 as its MRP. What Hi-Fi? reports a test price of £249 / $350 for the Hisense AX5125H and a UK observed low of £199. The latter figures are editorial price observations, not a guaranteed current sale price. What Hi-Fi? Dolby Atmos soundbar guide.

Those currencies and price types should not be used to rank these models against one another. Check a local authorized retailer for the current price and stock of the precise variant you want. The documented candidates here are four non-Sony models; the evidence does not establish nine equally substantiated alternatives with current local availability and prices.
