The right Sony soundbar with a subwoofer depends on what you mean by “with.” The HT-S400 is a simple 2.1-channel system with a separate wireless subwoofer; the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6 adds a documented 3.1.2-channel layout and Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility with a wireless subwoofer; and the HT-A7000 has a subwoofer built into the soundbar. Sony also offers optional subwoofers for certain models, but compatibility is model-specific.
Which Sony soundbar-and-subwoofer setup should you choose?
These are configuration-based picks, not a sound-quality ranking. Sony’s published specifications identify layouts, connections and supported formats; they do not establish that a higher channel count or power figure will sound better in every room.

For the HT-S400, Sony’s 330 W figure is a manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement of performance. The available official information for the Theatre Bar 6 and HT-A7000 does not provide a like-for-like basis for ranking bass, dialogue or overall sound quality.

Separate wireless subwoofer included
A separate unit can be placed apart from the bar, but it occupies floor space and needs a suitable location. The HT-S400 and BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6 are examples of systems listed with a wireless subwoofer.

Subwoofer built into the bar
An integrated arrangement keeps the setup to one soundbar enclosure. Sony specifies a built-in subwoofer in the HT-A7000; that does not mean it has the same arrangement as a bar supplied with a separate subwoofer.
Optional compatible subwoofer
An add-on can expand a compatible system, but Sony does not describe its subwoofers as universally interchangeable. Check the exact soundbar and accessory models in Sony’s optional-speaker compatibility guidance before buying.

Can you add a subwoofer to a Sony soundbar?
Sometimes. Sony’s compatibility guidance lists optional subwoofers for specific soundbar families. For Bar 7 (HT-A7100), Bar 8 (HT-A8000) and Bar 9 (HT-A9000), it lists BRAVIA Theatre Sub 7 (SA-SW7), Sub 8 (SA-SW8), Sub 9 (SA-SW9), SA-SW3 and SA-SW5. This list is model-specific, not a promise that every listed subwoofer works with every Sony soundbar.

Sony identifies the BRAVIA Theatre Sub 8 (SA-SW8) as an optional subwoofer for systems including Bar 9, Bar 8, Bar 7, HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000. Its product page specifies a 200 mm aluminum driver. Sony says two Sub 8 units can be connected only with soundbars that support dual subwoofers, and the pair must be matching subwoofer models.

What to check before choosing
TV connection and formats
Match the soundbar’s documented connections to your TV and intended setup. The HT-S400 specifications list HDMI ARC, optical input and Bluetooth 5.0. The Theatre Bar 6 is listed in Sony’s catalog as compatible with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, but check the exact regional product page for connection details before purchase.
Room and furniture fit
A separate subwoofer needs its own footprint and a place where its cable or wireless connection can work within your room layout. An integrated soundbar avoids a separate enclosure. Measure the space available for the bar and any subwoofer, and check the model’s dimensions on its product page; the cited material here does not provide a consistent set of dimensions for comparing all three examples.
