If your Sony soundbar turns off by itself, first match the symptom to its cause: shutdown after inactivity can point to Auto Standby, while shutdown when the TV powers off can point to HDMI-CEC or BRAVIA Sync. The exact fix depends on the soundbar model and connected TV, so check the model-specific Sony manual before changing settings or trying a reset.
Find out when the soundbar shuts down
- After a period without sound: Check Auto Standby and the connected source’s audio output. Sony says the feature may put some bars into standby after approximately 15 minutes; that timing is not established for every Sony model. Sony’s auto-shutdown guidance was last modified February 3, 2022.
- When the TV turns off: Check HDMI-CEC power controls on both the soundbar and TV. Sony describes this linked-power behavior in its HDMI-connected equipment guidance, last modified January 19, 2026.
To identify the right instructions, find the soundbar’s model number and open its matching manual or Help Guide through Sony Support. Setting names, available features, and reset procedures vary by model.
Turn off Auto Standby if your model allows it
Search the model’s manual for “Auto Standby” or a similarly named standby option. If the manual shows a control for it, follow those model-specific instructions to disable the feature and see whether the bar stays on.

Not every soundbar offers this option. Sony specifically says Auto Standby cannot be turned off on the HT-CT80, so the absence of a disable setting may be expected rather than a fault.

Check the audio signal from the source
If the soundbar goes into standby while you expect it to be playing, check how audio is being sent to it. Sony suggests these setup-dependent checks:
- With a cable or satellite box connected, set that box’s volume to maximum and control listening volume with the soundbar.
- When using a TV, select external audio output in the TV’s audio settings if that option is available. If it is not, try increasing the TV volume.
These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes; the relevant controls depend on the TV, source device, and soundbar connection.

Check whether the TV is controlling soundbar power
If the shutdown consistently follows the TV turning off, review HDMI-CEC power settings at both ends of the connection. Sony uses names including BRAVIA Sync, Control for HDMI, “Standby Linked to TV,” and “Auto devices off,” but labels and availability differ across products.
- In the soundbar’s matching manual, look up Control for HDMI or the equivalent setting and check its current state.
- In the TV’s settings, look for BRAVIA Sync, HDMI-CEC, or an equivalent device-control option. If the TV is not a Sony BRAVIA, the setting may have another name.
- Review any linked standby or automatic device-off option on the TV, then test whether the soundbar still powers down with the TV.
Do not assume a particular menu path applies to every model; consult the relevant manuals for the exact controls.

Reset the soundbar if the checks do not help
If Auto Standby, source audio, and linked power settings do not explain the shutdown, Sony recommends trying a reset. Use the reset procedure in the manual for your exact model; button combinations are not universal. Sony’s soundbar troubleshooting guide, last modified January 19, 2026, provides model-oriented support guidance.
If the soundbar remains properly connected but continues shutting down after these checks and a reset, contact Sony Support about repair. The troubleshooting guidance does not establish that a replacement bar, remote, cable, or part is needed.
