Sony has announced a lower-priced PS5 Digital Edition for Japan: the Midnight Black Japanese-only model costs ¥55,000 (tax included) and is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. It is not a newly announced US price cut or a worldwide bargain console. Sony says buyers must use Japanese as the system language and have a PlayStation account registered to Japan.
What Sony announced
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese-only on October 13, 2026. The console, model CFI-2200B02S, is a Japan-limited digital PS5 with a planned November 19, 2026 release. Reservations are scheduled to begin October 20 through Japanese PlayStation retailers and ecommerce sites. Sony’s announcement sets the suggested retail price at ¥55,000 including tax.
The “cheaper” description needs a regional qualifier. Sony’s announcement applies to Japan, and the language and account requirements mean it is not simply a discounted console for buyers elsewhere. Sony says the console must be configured with Japanese as its system language and used with a PlayStation account whose country or region is Japan.

How much does it cost, and how does it compare?
The console is digital-only as sold: there is no disc drive in the box. If you want to play packaged games, Sony’s matching Midnight Black Disc Drive is a separate purchase for ¥11,980 including tax. Buying both at the announced Japanese suggested prices brings the total to ¥66,980, before any retailer-specific pricing or other costs.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
For context in the United States, Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 are $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, and $899.99 for PS5 Pro. Those US figures are not a direct price comparison with ¥55,000: they apply to a different market and currency, and the Japan price includes tax. Sony Direct displayed $649, $599, and $899 when checked on October 13, 2026; those are a dated store snapshot, not a stable price quote. Sony attributed its global price increases to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Sony’s March 2026 pricing announcement provides the effective-date recommended prices.
This is also not the first Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition announced at ¥55,000. A separate model was reported in November 2025 and launched on November 21, 2025; the 2026 announcement is for a later Midnight Black model. TechRadar’s November 12, 2025 report covers that earlier model.

What is included, and what are the specifications?
Sony lists an 825 GB custom SSD, one DualSense wireless controller, two horizontal feet, HDMI cable, power cord, USB cable, printed materials, and preinstalled ASTRO’s PLAYROOM. The vertical stand is sold separately. Sony cautions that system software uses some of the SSD, so the storage available for games and other user content is less than 825 GB.

Sony says the basic PS5 experience includes 3D audio, PS4 backward compatibility with exceptions, and DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. It also cautions that not all external devices are guaranteed to work and that specifications may change without notice. The announcement lists an M.2 connector but does not, by itself, establish which SSDs meet compatibility requirements; check Sony’s current requirements before buying an expansion drive.
Can you add a disc drive?
Yes. Sony plans to sell a matching Midnight Black Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1J01, separately for ¥11,980 including tax, also from November 19, 2026. It can be installed to play packaged games, but Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console. It is not included with the ¥55,000 console.

What does Sony say about future disc games?
Sony’s announcement says that newly released PlayStation games from January 2028 onward will be sold only as downloads through PlayStation Store and retailers. It also says disc games released before January 2028 will remain usable. This is the scope stated in Sony’s announcement; it does not say that existing disc games stop working when the new sales policy begins.
