Short answer: Choose PULSE Explore for in-ear portability, a charging case and the ability to keep a phone connected over Bluetooth while you play through PlayStation Link. Choose PULSE 3D for an over-ear fit, physical headset controls, a documented 3.5 mm wired option and the longer single-charge runtime listed by Sony. Both can deliver PS5 3D Audio in supported games; Sony’s documentation does not establish an objective overall sound-quality winner.

The comparison below uses Sony’s product pages, support material and manuals accessed October 13, 2026. Battery, range and feature figures are manufacturer specifications rather than independent test results.

Quick verdict

  • Buy PULSE Explore if you want earbuds that pack into a small case, use them away from the console, or need a phone call to come through while PS5 game audio remains active.
  • Buy PULSE 3D if you prefer cushions around your ears, want mute, volume and game/chat controls on the headset, or need a cable option for PlayStation VR or a mobile device.
  • Do not choose on the phrase 3D audio alone. Both products are compatible with PS5 audio use, and Tempest 3D Audio depends on supported games and compatible headphones.

Design, fit and portability

PULSE Explore: earbuds and a case

Explore uses an in-ear design rather than a headband. That makes the complete kit easier to put in a bag and leaves your ears uncovered outside the earbuds, which is useful when moving between rooms or taking the set with you. The case supplies the additional charging capacity listed by Sony, so you recharge the earbuds between sessions instead of carrying a full-size headset.

#1 Best Overall
PULSE Explore Wireless Earbuds
  • Box Contents: PULSE Explore wireless earbuds, PlayStation Link USB adapter, Charging case, 6 Earbud tips, USB cable, Printed Materials
  • Next Generation Gaming Audio - Experience extraordinary lifelike sound in yur favorite games.
  • Multi-Device Connectivity - Go where adventure takes you with the ability to wirelessly connect to a range of devices.
  • Command and Control - Lead your squad to victory with crystal-clear voice capture and easy-access controls.
  • Built for Adventure - Enjoy lifelike sound wherever you go with a portable design and charging case.

In-ear comfort depends heavily on ear shape, tip size and how securely each bud seals. Sony’s safety guide gives a weight for each earbud with medium tips, but it does not predict whether a particular tip will remain comfortable during a long session. If you dislike anything entering the ear canal, the lighter individual-bud figure does not make Explore a suitable substitute for an over-ear design.

PULSE 3D: cushioned over-ear construction

PULSE 3D surrounds the ears with plush earpads and uses a padded headband. The cups can feel less intrusive than earbuds and avoid the seal-dependent fit of an in-ear product, although a headband and enclosed cups are more noticeable when you travel. Sony’s published headset weight is a specification, not a comfort test; pressure, glasses, head size and heat tolerance vary from person to person.

The two designs also behave differently in shared spaces. Explore does not cover the outer ear, so you may remain more aware of nearby sounds, while PULSE 3D’s closed, over-ear arrangement can feel more isolating. Neither Sony page promises a particular level of passive isolation, so treat this as a fit and lifestyle consideration rather than a measured acoustic rating.

Wireless and wired connections

How Explore handles two devices

Explore uses the included PlayStation Link USB adapter for PS5 and also supports Bluetooth. Sony Support documents a PS5-plus-phone configuration in which game audio arrives over PlayStation Link while a phone call is heard through the earbuds. This is a simultaneous connection, not a claim that every Bluetooth device or every PlayStation Link product can be combined. Sony’s PlayStation Link support documentation lists the supported-device principle and describes PlayStation Link as a lossless, wireless connection; that wording is Sony’s product description rather than an independent measurement.

The dual-connection behavior is the most meaningful connectivity advantage for people who answer calls, listen for phone notifications or switch between console and mobile use. It does not turn Explore into a wired headset: no wired audio connection is established in the Sony material used for this comparison.

How PULSE 3D connects

PULSE 3D uses 2.4 GHz radio communication through its supplied USB wireless adapter. Sony lists PS5 and PS4 use and compatibility with Windows and macOS computers through that adapter. The headset also includes a 3.5 mm audio cable. Sony specifically documents that cable for PlayStation VR and mobile devices, but the headset’s built-in controls are unavailable when audio is carried over those wired connections.

The wired option is therefore a fallback for devices that cannot use the USB adapter, not a way to retain every wireless feature with the cable attached. If one-cable compatibility with a VR headset or phone matters, PULSE 3D has the clearer documented path.

  • Multi-Device Connectivity - Go where adventure takes you with the ability to wirelessly connect to a range of devices.

What the adapters mean in practice

Neither product is simply a Bluetooth headset that pairs directly to a PS5. Their primary console paths use a supplied USB adapter: PlayStation Link for Explore and 2.4 GHz wireless for PULSE 3D. Keep that small adapter attached to the console or store it with the headset when traveling. On a computer, confirm that the required USB port and operating-system support are available before buying; Sony specifically names compatible Windows and macOS computers for PULSE 3D.

Explore’s Bluetooth link is useful for a phone, but it should not be treated as universal multipoint. Sony’s documented example is a supported PS5-plus-phone combination. If your plan involves a tablet, laptop and phone at the same time, check the current PlayStation Link compatibility list rather than assuming all three will mix.

Battery life and charging routine

Sony rates Explore’s earbuds for up to five hours and says the case provides up to ten additional hours. The first figure describes one charge in the earbuds; the second is stored energy delivered by the case across recharges, not an uninterrupted ten-hour earbud session. Real runtime changes with volume, microphone use, wireless conditions and other operating factors.

The PULSE 3D manual lists up to 12 hours at mid volume. That is a single-headset-use estimate, so it is easier to plan a long session without stopping to return earbuds to a case. Sony’s wording is conditional on mid-volume operation, and actual battery life can vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are different charging arrangements rather than a simple winner. Explore favors short sessions followed by case charging and portability; PULSE 3D favors a longer continuous session from the headset itself. If you regularly play marathon sessions, remember that Explore’s buds need to be returned to the case between charges, while PULSE 3D can remain on your head while connected to its charging cable only if your setup and cable placement allow it.

Microphones, chat and controls

Explore microphones

Explore has built-in microphones, and Sony advertises AI-enhanced noise rejection for its PULSE microphones. “AI-enhanced” is a manufacturer feature description; the supplied Sony material does not provide an independent speech-in-noise score or a comparison with PULSE 3D.

PULSE 3D controls and microphones

PULSE 3D has two built-in microphones that Sony describes as noise-cancelling. Its control layout includes dedicated mute and volume controls, a game/chat balance control and a mic-monitoring button. Those controls let you make common adjustments without opening a console menu, which is useful when you regularly switch between teammate voice and game sound.

  • LONG BATTERY LIFE & QUICK CHARGING: Up to 11 hours of battery life (up to 22hrs with case) with quick charging (5 min charge for up to 1 hour of playback).

  • STAY CONNECTED: Ambient Sound Mode keeps you aware of your surroundings.
  • EASY HANDS- FREE CALLING: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.

Explore can handle voice chat through its built-in microphones, but the reviewed documentation does not establish an equivalent physical game/chat and mic-monitoring control set. If those controls are central to your routine, PULSE 3D offers the better-documented control scheme. Conversely, players who mostly adjust volume in the PS5 menus may prefer Explore’s smaller form and not miss a dedicated mixer.

PS5 3D Audio and what can—and cannot—be concluded about sound

Sony says PULSE 3D was specifically tuned for the 3D Audio made possible by PS5. Sony’s current PULSE overview also says Tempest 3D Audio can be heard through compatible headphones in supported games. That supports using either product for PS5 spatial audio when the game and device path support it; it does not mean every game presents the same effect or that one headset has universally superior imaging.

Explore’s product description mentions planar magnetic drivers. PULSE 3D’s page emphasizes tuning for PS5 3D Audio. Both statements describe Sony’s design goals, not independent frequency-response, distortion, latency or imaging measurements. No controlled listening test in the available material proves that Explore sounds better than PULSE 3D, or vice versa.

Use the console and game’s own audio support as the deciding condition. A title must implement the relevant 3D Audio mode, and you still need a comfortable fit and a connection that suits your setup. A headset marketed for 3D Audio will not create the same spatial presentation in every stereo source, and the official specifications do not quantify positional accuracy.

Compatibility beyond a PS5

Explore as a mobile-friendly kit

Explore’s Bluetooth capability and documented simultaneous phone connection make it the more flexible choice for someone who moves between PS5 and mobile use. The simultaneous example is specifically PS5 plus a phone; do not assume that any two arbitrary devices will connect at once without checking Sony’s supported combinations.

PULSE 3D with PS4, computers and wired devices

PULSE 3D is documented for PS5 and PS4, and Sony lists compatible Windows and macOS computers when the wireless adapter is used. The supplied 3.5 mm cable extends use to PlayStation VR and mobile devices, with the control limitation described above. This gives PULSE 3D more documented connection methods, even though its over-ear form is less compact.

For a household with more than one console, the PULSE 3D’s PS4 documentation can matter as much as its PS5 features. Explore may still be useful away from the console over Bluetooth, but the reviewed Sony material does not establish a wired fallback or a universal adapter workflow for every older device.

What comes in the box and what you may need

Sony lists a PlayStation Link USB adapter for Explore and describes its charging case as part of the earbud system. The Explore safety guide gives approximate weights for the earbuds, case and adapter, which helps explain why the kit is travel-oriented. Plan for a free USB port on the PS5 and a way to charge the case.

For PULSE 3D, Sony lists the wireless adapter, a 1.2 m audio cable and a USB cable in the box. The 3.5 mm cable is the relevant accessory for PlayStation VR or mobile use, while wireless console operation requires the adapter. The included cable does not preserve the headset’s mute, volume, game/chat or mic-monitoring controls, so do not buy it expecting a full wired version of the wireless interface.

Basic connection checklists

Explore on PS5 with a phone available

  1. Plug the supplied PlayStation Link USB adapter into the PS5.
  2. Power on the earbuds and complete the PlayStation Link pairing procedure described in Sony’s documentation.
  3. On the phone, open its Bluetooth settings and pair the earbuds as a Bluetooth device.
  4. Place a test call or play a short clip while a PS5 game is running to confirm that the simultaneous PS Link and Bluetooth behavior works for your specific phone and software versions.

The last check matters because Sony describes simultaneous operation for supported device combinations rather than promising universal Bluetooth multipoint behavior. Test microphone input as well as incoming audio before relying on the setup for a group call.

PULSE 3D wirelessly

  1. Insert the included wireless adapter into the PS5, PS4 or compatible computer.
  2. Turn on the headset and complete the adapter’s pairing process.
  3. Use the headset’s mute, volume, game/chat and mic-monitoring controls during a chat session to confirm the controls you need.

PULSE 3D by cable

  1. Connect the supplied 3.5 mm cable to the headset and the PlayStation VR or mobile device.
  2. Set volume on the connected device, because Sony states that the headset controls are not available over this wired connection.

Cost, replacement parts and ownership details

There is no reliable price winner to report here because Sony’s pricing, retailer stock, colors and promotions vary by country and change over time. Compare the current local prices for the complete package, not just the headset listing: Explore’s case and PlayStation Link adapter are part of its intended setup, while PULSE 3D includes its adapter, USB cable and 1.2 m 3.5 mm cable.

Budget for convenience rather than assuming replacement accessories are interchangeable. Sony’s reviewed material does not confirm exact replacement ear-tip or replacement-cushion model numbers. Check the precise model designation before ordering third-party tips, cushions or cables, and do not assume a generic part has the correct fit or electrical compatibility.

Important limits before you buy

  • No independent performance ranking: Sony’s claims about lossless PlayStation Link, planar drivers, AI-enhanced noise rejection and 3D Audio tuning are manufacturer descriptions. The available material does not include laboratory measurements or hands-on tests of sound, microphone quality, latency, comfort or durability.
  • Battery and range are estimates: The published figures depend on volume, environment, interference and usage. PULSE 3D’s range figure is an approximate maximum, not a guarantee through walls.
  • Prices and availability are regional: Current retail prices, stock, colors and promotions were not established here. Check your local PlayStation store or retailer before purchase.
  • Accessory fit is not confirmed: Sony’s material reviewed here does not verify replacement ear-tip or replacement-cushion model numbers. Confirm the exact product model before buying replacement parts.
  • Comfort is personal: Plush earpads do not guarantee a comfortable fit for every head, and a low earbud weight does not guarantee that an in-ear seal will suit every ear.
  • Wireless claims have conditions: Simultaneous Bluetooth and PlayStation Link operation applies to supported combinations. It is not a promise of unrestricted multipoint pairing.

Final recommendation

For a PS5 player who values mobility and phone integration, PULSE Explore is the more distinctive choice: its earbud format, charging case and documented simultaneous Bluetooth connection solve problems that an ordinary console headset does not. For someone who wants a familiar over-ear shape, controls directly on the headset, a wired fallback and a longer single-charge estimate, PULSE 3D is the safer fit. Treat 3D Audio as a compatibility feature shared by both rather than as proof that either one is automatically the better-sounding product.

Which has longer battery life, Explore or PULSE 3D?

PULSE 3D is listed for up to 12 hours at mid volume on one charge. Explore is listed for up to five hours in the earbuds, with up to 10 additional hours supplied by its charging case.

Is PULSE 3D wired?

It is primarily wireless through its USB adapter, but Sony includes a 1.2 m 3.5 mm cable for PlayStation VR and mobile devices. Headset controls are unavailable when using that wired connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which is lighter?

Explore’s safety guide lists each earbud at approximately 6.1 g with medium tips, while the PULSE 3D headset is listed at 292 g. Those figures do not predict which design will feel more comfortable to you.

Can I use PULSE 3D with a PS4 or computer?

Sony documents PS4 use and compatible Windows and macOS computers through the included wireless adapter. The 3.5 mm cable also supports documented PlayStation VR and mobile-device use.

Does PULSE Explore have a wired mode?

No wired audio connection is established in the Sony material used for this comparison. Explore’s documented paths are PlayStation Link and Bluetooth.

Which headset is better for chat controls?

PULSE 3D has the clearer documented advantage because Sony lists dedicated mute, volume, game/chat balance and mic-monitoring controls. Explore has built-in microphones, but equivalent physical controls are not established in the reviewed documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick PULSE Explore for portable earbuds, a charging case and documented PS5-plus-phone connectivity. Pick PULSE 3D for over-ear comfort, on-headset chat controls, a 3.5 mm fallback and Sony’s longer single-charge estimate. Both support PS5 3D Audio in compatible games, so fit and connection needs should decide the purchase.
