For Sony’s current U.S. over-ear range, the WH-1000XM6 is the premium pick to investigate first; the WH-1000XM5 is the previous-generation alternative, while ULT WEAR and WH-CH720N are other models to compare for different budgets or priorities. Sony’s catalog confirms these models are available in its lineup, but the evidence here does not establish independent winners for sound, noise cancellation, comfort, or calls. Choose by the features you need, then check current pricing and detailed reviews before buying.
Which Sony over-ear headphones should you consider?
| Model | Best considered for | What the available evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Premium feature set | Sony lists adaptive noise-canceling features, multipoint, ambient sound, and up to 30 hours of playback with noise canceling on. Its listed specifications include Bluetooth 5.3 and a detachable cable. |
| Sony WH-1000XM5 | Previous-generation alternative | Sony lists multipoint, ambient sound, and up to 30 hours with noise canceling on. Its listed specifications include Bluetooth 5.2. |
| Sony ULT WEAR | A candidate in Sony’s bass-positioned ULT POWER SOUND line | Sony’s U.S. catalog lists it in that product family; the evidence available here does not support comparative sound or noise-canceling judgments. |
| Sony WH-CH720N | A lower-cost model to compare | Sony’s U.S. catalog lists it among its over-ear products; detailed comparative specifications and performance are not established here. |
The model labels above are a shortlist, not test-based awards. Sony’s catalog establishes lineup placement, while the more detailed specifications below are manufacturer statements. There is no independent comparative testing here to establish which model sounds best, cancels the most noise, fits most comfortably, or handles calls best.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSony says the XM6 uses its HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 and an adaptive 12-microphone system, with optimization for external noise, air pressure, and wearing style. Sony’s product FAQ, marked generated July 23, 2026, says the QN3 is “7x faster than the QN1” in the XM5 and describes real-time microphone optimization for noise cancellation, sound quality, and call clarity. That is Sony’s processor comparison, not an independent measurement showing how much better the XM6 performs in everyday use.

How does the WH-1000XM5 compare?
Sony’s specifications list the XM5 at approximately 8.82 oz, with Bluetooth 5.2, SBC, AAC, and LDAC support, multipoint, atmospheric-pressure optimization, and ambient sound. Sony gives the same maximum music playback figures as for the XM6: up to 30 hours with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off. These are manufacturer figures, not a guarantee of runtime for every listening setup.

The XM5 may be worth considering if its current price makes it a better fit than the newer model. Sony’s catalog showed offers when accessed on October 7, 2026, but those prices are volatile and should not be treated as current. Compare the live prices of both models before deciding; the available evidence does not establish that the XM5 is better value at any particular price.

Battery life and charging
Sony rates both models for up to 30 hours of music playback with noise canceling enabled, or up to 40 hours with it disabled. Those matching maximum figures do not prove that real-world endurance is identical. Sony’s XM6 product FAQ also mentions Quick Charging support, but the available specifications here do not establish charging times for a direct comparison.

Bluetooth and codecs
The XM6 supports Bluetooth 5.3 and SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3; the XM5 supports Bluetooth 5.2 and SBC, AAC, and LDAC. Whether a codec is usable depends on the connected device and configuration. A longer codec list, or a newer Bluetooth version by itself, does not establish an audible advantage.
Wired use and connections
Sony lists multipoint and ambient sound for both headphones. The XM6 support specifications additionally list a detachable cable and passive operation, which may matter if you want a wired option. These feature listings do not establish how either model performs in calls or how convenient its controls are in daily use.

Weight and comfort
Sony’s approximate listed weights are 8.96 oz for the XM6 and 8.82 oz for the XM5. Weight alone cannot determine comfort: the evidence available here does not provide independent fit testing or establish which model is more comfortable over long sessions.
How should you choose?
- Start with your budget. Check Sony’s current U.S. catalog and compare live prices for the XM6 and XM5. Do not rely on an older sale or MSRP as the price you will pay.
- Decide whether the XM6’s listed features matter to you. Its specifications include LC3, Bluetooth 5.3, a detachable cable, and passive operation; the XM5 specifications list Bluetooth 5.2 and no LC3. Verify compatibility with your devices before treating a feature as useful.
- Compare performance evidence for your priorities. If sound character, noise cancellation, call quality, fit, or case portability is decisive, consult independent tests that evaluate those areas directly. Sony’s product descriptions alone do not settle those comparisons.
- Consider the other catalog models only after checking their details. Sony lists ULT WEAR and WH-CH720N, but the evidence here does not establish their comparative sound, noise cancellation, comfort, calls, or exact specifications. Confirm current product details and pricing before choosing one.
What is confirmed—and what is not?
Sony’s U.S. catalog accessed October 7, 2026 lists the WH-1000XM6, WH-1000XM5, ULT WEAR, and WH-CH720N among its over-ear options. Sony’s support pages provide the XM6 and XM5 specifications described above. These are useful for checking stated features, but they are not independent performance tests. Current prices and promotions can change, and no current retailer stock or seller comparison is established here.
