Sony has not confirmed when the PlayStation 6 will launch or what it will cost. In a May 2026 investor Q&A, Sony said decisions on next-generation platform timing and pricing had not been made. A reported 2027 launch and a handheld codenamed Project Canis remain speculation, not announcements.

What Sony has actually confirmed

Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki said during the live interpretation of the May 2026 earnings briefing: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” GameSpot reported that wording, while Sony’s written Q&A confirms the substance and cautions that its summary is not a verbatim translation.

That means two of the most common online claims—an exact PS6 release date and a launch price—have no official confirmation. Sony also has not announced Project Canis, the reported codename for a possible handheld companion.

Why memory costs are affecting the decision

Sony said it had secured the memory volumes needed for 2026, but expected memory prices and supply-demand conditions to remain elevated and tight through 2027. Higher memory prices raise the bill of materials—the cost of the components inside each console—and increase manufacturing costs.

Rather than commit to a launch plan before those conditions are clearer, Sony said it is considering several responses:

  • Reducing hardware costs where possible.
  • Adjusting sales and go-to-market strategies.
  • Considering changes to the business model.

Sony’s comments do not establish that memory shortages alone will delay PS6. They do show that component pricing and availability are part of the commercial decision about when to launch and how to price the system.

Why a 2027 launch remains unconfirmed

Online predictions often place PS6 in 2027, but that year is not a Sony commitment. In a June 2026 Game & Network Services Q&A, Sony said next-generation hardware development requires a long lead time. It also said coordinating a launch with competitors is not feasible.

The June statement leaves room for Sony to choose its own schedule rather than treating another company’s hardware launch as a fixed target. It does not provide a launch window, reveal a production milestone, or confirm that the console will arrive in 2027.

What Project Canis claims do—and do not—show

Project Canis should be treated as a reported codename for a possible handheld companion. The available October 14, 2026 report says alleged custom-processor and graphics details have not been authenticated by Sony.

A reported leaker comment that “$600 is definitely not possible right now” came from a NeoGAF discussion. It is neither a Sony price nor a verified forecast. Readers should not treat it as evidence that a handheld will cost less than $600, launch at $600, or launch at all.

  • A retail price, release date, or regional availability.
  • A bundle relationship between a handheld and the next PlayStation console.

Sony has a large existing platform to protect

Sony reported more than 125 million active PlayStation users in its May 2026 corporate strategy materials. That installed audience gives Sony a substantial base for future hardware, but it does not reveal the PS6 schedule or pricing strategy. A large user base can support several launch approaches, including different hardware configurations, digital and physical options, or changes to how the console is sold; Sony has not said which approach it will choose.

What an official PS6 announcement would need to clarify

When Sony does publish specifications, buyers will need more than a date and headline price. The most consequential details to check are:

  • Launch timing by region and whether availability is simultaneous.
  • Price, taxes, storage capacity, and memory configuration.
  • Physical-disc and digital-only models, if both are offered.
  • Backward-compatibility support for existing PlayStation games and accessories.
  • Performance targets and the conditions used to describe them.
  • Whether any handheld is sold separately, bundled, or remains an unrelated project.

None of those PS6 specifications is confirmed in the current statements. Until Sony publishes them, retailer listings, leaked specification sheets, and social-media price claims should be considered provisional.

How to read the latest PS6 rumors

  1. Look for a Sony source. A corporate announcement, investor Q&A, or official PlayStation post carries more weight than an anonymous report.
  2. Separate timing from prediction. “Expected in 2027” describes a forecast; it is not a launch date.
  3. Check whether a price is official. A leaker’s estimate or forum comment cannot establish retail pricing.
  4. Require authentication for specifications. Alleged processor and graphics details remain unverified unless Sony confirms them.
  5. Wait for regional information. Even an announced date or price may differ by market.

As of October 16, 2026, the defensible position is straightforward: Sony is still deciding the next-generation console’s timing and price, memory economics remain a major consideration, and Project Canis is an unconfirmed rumor rather than a revealed product.
