Sony plans to stop producing game discs for new PlayStation releases in January 2028. The statement about understanding fans’ attachment to physical games came from Sony Group CFO Lin Tao during the company’s FY2026 first-quarter briefing—not from former PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi.
What Sony is changing in January 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment said on July 1, 2026, that physical game-disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. New releases will be sold through the PlayStation Store and retailers in digital formats only.

Sony also says the change does not affect games that were already released, or that will be released before January 2028, in disc format. Existing PS5 and other compatible PlayStation discs therefore remain part of the platform’s supported library after the transition. The announcement concerns manufacturing discs for new releases, not an instruction to discard games already in circulation.
Retail stores are expected to remain part of the distribution system, but a retailer sale may provide a digital purchase rather than a playable disc. Sony’s announcement does not define one universal package or code format for every country and game.

Who said Sony understands the backlash?
The widely repeated “we understand those emotions” wording was attributed to Sony Group CFO Lin Tao in the FY2026 first-quarter investor Q&A. It was not a quotation from Ken Kutaragi, the historical creator of PlayStation.
In the reported translation, Tao said: “We understand those emotions; we want to consider that.” A longer passage described games as entertainment connected to people’s fond memories and said Sony would continue exploring how to engage gamers in a future digital ecosystem.
Kutaragi remains relevant to the story because of his role in creating PlayStation, but the current policy explanation should be credited to Tao. No statement from Kutaragi establishes that he made this comment about the 2028 disc change.

Why are PlayStation games going digital-only?
Sony’s stated reason is the broader digitalization of entertainment. GameSpot’s report on the investor briefing said Sony indicated that 82% of its consumers were choosing digital games. That figure was presented as the company’s basis for adapting distribution to prevailing buying behavior, not as a promise that every player prefers digital purchases.
The shift also changes how Sony handles manufacturing, inventory and retail distribution. Digital delivery lets a game be sold through the PlayStation Store without pressing, shipping and stocking a disc. Sony still says it intends to offer purchase choices through retailers and the PlayStation Store, but those choices will increasingly involve digital entitlements rather than physical media.
Why do gamers want physical games?
A Windows Central poll conducted in July 2026 collected 1,577 votes. In that poll, 71% said they would miss buying physical games, 16% wanted more options, and 13% were happy to embrace a fully digital future. The result measures that publication’s readers, not all PlayStation owners or the entire games market.

- Ownership and control: A disc is a tangible item that can remain on a shelf, even when a digital purchase is tied to an account and platform license.
- Resale and lending: A physical copy can generally be sold or lent under the rules that apply to the buyer’s region and the title. Digital purchases normally cannot be transferred in the same way.
- Preservation: A disc can preserve game data outside a company’s storefront. It may still require patches, installation or online services, so it is not automatically a complete archival copy.
- Collecting: Packaging, special editions and shelf displays are part of the value for collectors.
- Consumer choice: Many commenters were not rejecting digital purchases; they wanted digital convenience alongside an optional disc drive, multiple console versions or another way to keep physical collections.
- Trust: Players worry about delistings, account access, server shutdowns and future platform policies when a purchase exists only as a digital entitlement.

Can I still buy physical PS5 games?
Yes, for games released in disc format before January 2028, including titles already available and qualifying releases scheduled before that date. Those products can continue circulating through retailers and the used market after Sony stops manufacturing discs for new post-January-2028 games.
The announcement does not say that every future PS5 release will disappear from store shelves. Instead, a retailer may sell a digital format. Buyers should check the package description carefully before purchasing, particularly when a box is marketed as a “physical” or “boxed” edition.

Will PS5 discs still work after 2028?
Sony says the 2028 transition has no impact on games that already released, or will release before January 2028, in disc format. In practical terms, those discs remain usable on compatible hardware after the manufacturing cutoff. A particular game can still require installation, updates, an account or online servers, so “the disc still works” does not mean every feature will remain available indefinitely.

Some future boxed releases may contain a download code instead of a disc. GameSpot reported that Sony had suggested code-in-a-box releases could remain possible, citing GTA 6 as an example. That is a possibility, not a universal post-2028 standard.
Before buying, look for wording that identifies the contents as a disc, a digital code or an account-based entitlement. A box can provide shelf appeal without providing the ownership, resale and offline characteristics associated with a game disc. Availability and redemption rules may also vary by region.

What Sony’s decision means for players
The policy creates a clear split: pre-2028 disc releases remain in circulation, while new PlayStation games from January 2028 onward will be distributed digitally, including through retail channels. Sony is responding to a reported 82% digital purchasing share, but its own CFO’s comments acknowledge that convenience does not erase the emotional, practical and preservation concerns attached to physical games.
For players, the key question is no longer whether digital distribution is growing; Sony has decided it will be the format for new releases. The remaining uncertainty is how much choice retailers, boxed editions and console hardware will preserve for people who want a physical object rather than only a download entitlement.
