Sony has withdrawn the promised Android 17 upgrade for the Xperia 10 VI. In a support notice modified October 15, 2026, Sony says limitations in the phone’s storage configuration mean it cannot deliver an Android 17 experience that meets its standards. The Xperia 10 VI will therefore finish its major-version support at Android 16.
What Sony changed
When Sony launched the Xperia 10 VI in 2024 with Android 14, it announced three Android operating-system upgrades. That commitment implied an upgrade path through Android 15, Android 16 and Android 17. Sony’s current support table now lists only Android 14 → Android 15 → Android 16 for the model.
Sony acknowledges that the decision reverses its original announcement: “We recognise that this falls short of our original announcement, and we wish to apologise for this change.” The company has not announced compensation, a trade-in program or replacement devices for affected owners.

Sony attributes the cancellation to “limitations related to the device’s storage configuration.” Its explanation is that the Xperia 10 VI cannot provide an Android 17 upgrade experience Sony considers adequate.

The notice does not identify the exact storage component, a minimum usable-space threshold, a specific partition or a software workaround. It is therefore not established that freeing storage, replacing a component or resetting the phone would make Android 17 possible. Owners should treat Sony’s decision as a support-policy change rather than a problem they can fix through settings.
What version will Xperia 10 VI owners receive?
Final major Android release
Android 16 is the final major Android version listed for the Xperia 10 VI. The phone launched on Android 14, received Android 15 and is scheduled for Android 16. Android 17 is no longer part of Sony’s supported path for this model.
Security support continues
The canceled operating-system upgrade does not end security maintenance immediately. Sony says its four-year-from-launch security commitment remains unchanged. In Sony’s regional support overview, the Xperia 10 VI has a security-update end date of May 1, 2028. That date applies to the regional table Sony published; update timing and availability can still vary by market, carrier and software-release schedule.
Does this affect other Xperia phones?
Sony says the storage-related issue is specific to the Xperia 10 VI and “will not impact other Xperia models.” That statement does not change the support commitments listed for other devices, but it also does not provide a broader guarantee about future product announcements. Owners of another Xperia phone should check that model’s own Sony support entry rather than infer its update schedule from the 10 VI reversal.

What owners should do now
- Check your installed version: Open the phone’s Settings app, select System, then About phone or Android version (the exact label can vary by software release) to confirm whether Android 15 or Android 16 is installed.
- Keep automatic updates enabled: In Settings, open System and Software update, then install official updates when Sony or your carrier makes them available.
- Continue normal security practices: Apply Google Play system updates, use a screen lock and install apps from trusted sources. The end of Android 17 eligibility does not mean the phone stops working.
- Plan around 2028 if longevity matters: If you need Android versions beyond 16 or security support after May 1, 2028, compare replacement phones by their stated operating-system policy, security end date, storage design and total replacement cost.
What the cancellation means for buying or keeping the phone
The Xperia 10 VI still has a defined software path: three years of major Android versions counting the launch release’s two subsequent upgrades, followed by security support through the date Sony lists for the relevant region. The change matters most to buyers who chose the phone because the third post-launch upgrade was explicitly promised.
For current owners, the practical trade-off is between keeping a familiar handset through its remaining security period and replacing it earlier to obtain a longer Android runway. A replacement comparison should use documented update duration, the final supported Android version, the security-update end date, storage configuration and the complete purchase cost. Sony’s notice supplies no replacement discount or other remedy to include in that calculation.
Why the reversal matters
Major Android upgrades can require more than a compatible processor. They also depend on system-partition layout, available storage and the manufacturer’s ability to maintain acceptable performance and reliability. Sony has not published enough engineering detail to identify which storage constraint blocked Android 17 on this model, so owners should not assume that every phone with a similar capacity or specification will face the same limit.
The episode also shows why an advertised upgrade count should be read alongside the exact model, launch software and regional support terms. For the Xperia 10 VI, the originally announced three-upgrade promise no longer matches Sony’s current device table: the supported major-version sequence ends at Android 16.
