Short answer: the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Trio should sound wider and more cinematic than a single soundbar with a subwoofer because its front-left, center and front-right elements are physically separated. Add BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 speakers for dedicated wireless surrounds and BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 for a 600W bass module, and the system can approach the immersion of a conventional home theater. A soundbar-and-subwoofer package is still the better fit when simple installation, low visual clutter and fewer power points matter more than maximum envelopment.

What you are comparing

These are two different approaches to building a TV audio system. A conventional soundbar puts its front channels in one elongated enclosure under or in front of the television, then uses signal processing to create width and height. A soundbar-plus-subwoofer arrangement adds low-frequency impact, but the entire front soundstage remains tied to one position on the TV wall.

The BRAVIA Theatre Trio separates that front stage into three speaker elements. The left, center and right positions can spread across a cabinet or stand, so sounds pan across a larger physical span instead of being reproduced from one bar. The center element can keep dialogue anchored to the screen while the left and right elements provide more space for music, effects and on-screen movement.

The Trio can operate as a front-stage system by itself or become a larger wireless package with Rear 9 speakers and Sub 9. That modular design is the key distinction: you can buy the separated front stage first, then add rear channels or more bass when your room and budget justify them.

Verdict at a glance

  • Choose the Trio if a broad front image, clearer left-right movement and a more speaker-like presentation are your priorities.
  • Add Rear 9 when movie or game surround is more important than keeping every speaker at the front of the room.
  • Add Sub 9 when you want stronger low-frequency impact for explosions, scores and effects; it is a 600W wireless bass module.
  • Choose a soundbar and subwoofer when you want one front enclosure, fewer boxes, fewer power locations and the least demanding installation.
  • Expect room-dependent results. Seating position, wall reflections, speaker height and calibration affect how wide, high and continuous the system sounds.

Why the Trio can sound wider than one soundbar

Physical separation creates a larger front image

With one bar, left and right channels start only a few inches or feet apart along the TV wall. Processing can suggest a wider image, but the speakers themselves are still close together. The Trio places its three front elements apart, increasing the physical distance between the left and right sources. That can make a car crossing the screen, an orchestra spreading across a stage or an off-screen voice feel less confined to the bar.

The effect is most useful with a wide television and seating that faces the system directly. Listeners sitting far to one side may hear a different balance between the channels, just as they would with separate stereo speakers. A narrow room, a very close sofa or furniture that forces the three elements together reduces the advantage.

Dialogue remains tied to the picture

The dedicated center position gives dialogue a stable anchor near the middle of the display. In a single bar, the center channel is also physically central, but the adjacent left and right drivers are closer to it. Separating all three positions gives the front stage more room to place a voice in the screen while effects and music occupy the sides.

More components mean more placement work

The wider image is not free. The Trio needs shelf, cabinet or stand space for three units, and the left and right positions must be kept clear of the television and each other. You also have more visible hardware and more power connections than with one bar. Measure the furniture and check cable routes before buying; a system that cannot maintain left-right spacing will not deliver the full reason for choosing it.

What Rear 9 changes

Dedicated rear locations instead of only virtualization

Rear 9 speakers create actual rear-channel positions behind or beside the seating area. That gives a helicopter, crowd, rainstorm or game-world movement a physical path around the listener rather than asking the front bar to simulate every direction from the TV wall. Sony specifies wireless setup through the BRAVIA Connect app.

Rear speakers are most valuable when the sofa sits inside a reasonably symmetrical listening area and viewers regularly watch films or play games mixed for surround. They are less useful when the sofa is pushed against the back wall, one side is open to a hallway or the speakers must sit behind furniture. In those cases, reflections and blocked line-of-sight can make the surround field uneven.

Placement and power requirements

Place the two rears at comparable listening height, slightly behind the main seats and with their drivers unobstructed. Keep left and right distances as similar as the room allows. Each wireless speaker still needs a power outlet, so “wireless” describes the audio connection, not a battery-powered installation. Leave room to reach the outlets and avoid burying the speakers in corners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the app-based setup after the speakers are in their final positions. Calibration and room geometry influence perceived overhead effects and the continuity between the front and rear channels. Do not assume that adding rears automatically produces the same Atmos height or surround precision in every room.

What Sub 9 adds

More low-frequency headroom

BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 is a 600W wireless bass module designed for the Trio ecosystem. A separate subwoofer can move more air at low frequencies than the small drivers in a television or front bar, giving film impacts, music kick drums and game sound effects greater weight. It also lets the front speakers concentrate on midrange and treble instead of attempting to reproduce the deepest bass at high levels.

Subwoofer placement still matters. A corner can increase bass output but may make some notes boom while others disappear. Starting near the front wall, then testing a few positions and recalibrating, is safer than assuming the most powerful location will sound the most accurate.

A review observation, not a guarantee

In its 2026 review, What Hi-Fi? reported that moving from the earlier Sub 8 to Sub 9 addressed an occasional buzzing issue in its test system and elevated the result. That is one reviewer’s observation under its test conditions, not a promise that every room or unit will experience the same change.

How a soundbar-plus-subwoofer setup compares

Its main advantage is simplicity

A single soundbar and wireless subwoofer normally require one front position, one subwoofer position and fewer visible components. There are fewer decisions about spacing, fewer power locations and less chance that furniture will compromise a channel. This matters in apartments, bedrooms, open-plan rooms and rentals where permanent speaker placement is difficult.

A premium bar can still provide Dolby Atmos decoding, room calibration and optional wireless expansion. For example, Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 documentation lists 13 speaker units, 360 Spatial Sound Mapping and support for optional wireless components. Those features can create convincing height and width from a compact front enclosure, although the physical front-stage separation is not the same as placing three separate speakers across the room.

Virtual surround has limits

Reflected and processed sound depends on ceiling height, wall distance, furniture and the listener’s position. A bar may sound impressively wide in a reflective room and less enveloping in a heavily furnished one. Rear 9 provides a more direct route to rear-channel envelopment because the surround sources are actually behind the listener.

Cost and upgrade path

What Hi-Fi? listed the following 2026 reference prices. They are published review prices, not a guarantee of current retail pricing, promotions or exchange rates in your region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Component or package UK price US price Australia price
BRAVIA Theatre Trio £1,999 $2,000 AU$2,999
BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 £699 $750 AU$1,299
BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 £899 $900 AU$1,299
Trio plus Rear 9 plus Sub 9 (arithmetic total) £3,597 $3,650 AU$5,597

The modular route lets you start with the separated front stage and postpone either upgrade. That can make sense if you move frequently, are unsure about rear-speaker placement or want to spread the expense. The full package costs substantially more than the Trio alone because Rear 9 and Sub 9 are separate purchases. A soundbar-and-subwoofer bundle generally has a lower all-in entry point, but the exact amount depends on the model and region rather than on a single published package price.

Set up the Trio for the widest, most coherent result

  1. Measure the front furniture. Confirm that the three units can sit securely with clear space between left, center and right. Keep the center element aligned with the display.
  2. Center the seating. The main listening position should face the center speaker. Extreme side seating reduces the intended stereo balance.
  3. Keep the front elements at similar height. Avoid placing one channel on a much higher shelf or behind a cabinet door.
  4. Connect the television and sources. Use the television’s compatible HDMI connection and enable the audio format options required by your sources. Test dialogue, a left-to-right pan and an Atmos program before adding more components.
  5. Add Rear 9 only after the front stage is stable. Put the rears slightly behind the seating area, at comparable height, with clear paths to the listeners and accessible power outlets.
  6. Place Sub 9 and calibrate. Start near the front wall, listen for even bass at the main seats, then run the system’s calibration after moving the subwoofer or rears.
  7. Recheck after furniture changes. Sofas, curtains, rugs and cabinets alter reflections. Recalibration is worthwhile after a major room change.

Which setup suits movies?

For films, the complete Trio, Rear 9 and Sub 9 combination is the strongest choice of these options when you can place the speakers correctly. The separated front stage gives dialogue and front effects more scale, Rear 9 supplies direct side and rear information, and Sub 9 adds physical impact to scores and effects. What Hi-Fi? described the complete package in 2026 as a cinematic alternative to a traditional AV receiver and Dolby Atmos speaker installation.

The Trio without rears is still a meaningful step up in front-stage width, but it cannot reproduce the same behind-the-seat envelopment as dedicated rear channels. A well-calibrated soundbar and subwoofer may be preferable to a poorly placed Trio if furniture prevents proper spacing.

Which setup suits music?

Music usually benefits most from the Trio’s separated left-center-right layout. Stereo recordings can occupy a broader stage, and vocals can remain centered while instruments spread naturally. Keep the front elements at matching height and avoid using a surround mode that artificially pushes vocals into the room unless that is your preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sub 9 is useful for recordings with deep bass, but excessive level can mask vocals and bass instruments. Adjust it for integration rather than maximum rumble. Rear 9 is optional for two-channel listening; it becomes more relevant for concert mixes and multichannel music.

Which setup suits gaming?

Gamers who play story-driven titles, racing games or competitive shooters can benefit from both a wide front stage and real rear channels. The Trio can make on-screen movement easier to place left and right, while Rear 9 can provide a more direct sense of sounds arriving from behind. Sub 9 adds impact but should not be so loud that it obscures quieter cues.

Check the console’s output format and the television’s audio passthrough settings. If the console is connected through the TV, the TV must pass the supported signal to the audio system; otherwise, the system may fall back to a less immersive format.

Common buying mistakes

  • Buying the Trio without measuring. Three front elements need real width and stable support.
  • Assuming wireless means cable-free. Rear 9 and Sub 9 use wireless audio links but still need power outlets.
  • Putting rears in corners or behind obstructions. Blocked or highly asymmetrical placement weakens continuity.
  • Expecting identical Atmos height in every room. Ceiling height, wall reflections and calibration change the result.
  • Choosing Sub 9 only for its wattage. Placement and level determine whether bass sounds integrated or boomy.
  • Comparing a premium complete Trio package with an unspecified budget bar. Sound quality and cost depend heavily on the exact soundbar, subwoofer and optional rears being compared.

Decision framework

Choose the Trio alone if

  • You want a visibly wider front stage than one bar can normally provide.
  • You have shelf or stand space for three front elements.
  • You may add rear speakers or a subwoofer later rather than buying everything immediately.

Choose Trio plus Rear 9 if

  • Movies and games are the priority.
  • Your seating has usable space behind or beside it for two speakers.
  • You can provide two additional power outlets and keep the speakers unobstructed.

Choose Trio plus Rear 9 and Sub 9 if

  • You want the most cinematic version of this Sony platform.
  • You value physical surround envelopment and strong bass more than minimal hardware.
  • Your room can accommodate the full layout and the higher combined cost.

Choose a soundbar and subwoofer if

  • You need the fastest, least visible installation.
  • Your furniture cannot separate three front speakers or place rears correctly.
  • You prefer fewer boxes and power connections, even if the front image is less physically spread out.

Bottom line

The BRAVIA Theatre Trio is the better-sounding design for a wide, speaker-like front stage, while the full Trio, Rear 9 and Sub 9 system is the more immersive choice for films and games. A soundbar with a subwoofer wins on simplicity and space efficiency. Because room geometry and placement determine how much of the theoretical advantage you actually hear, choose the system your room can support correctly rather than the one with the longest feature list.
