The Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 (HT-A7100) does not include a subwoofer. Pairing it with Sony’s optional Sub 7 makes it a 5.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos and DTS:X system, and the combination is the version praised by What Hi-Fi? and tested by Tom’s Guide. Whether it is a no-brainer depends on the bundle price, your bass needs, and whether the package fits your room and budget.
Does the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 come with a subwoofer?
No. The Bar 7, model HT-A7100, is a standalone soundbar without a built-in subwoofer. Sony’s Sub 7 is an optional wireless companion. Listings may describe the paired system as BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 + S, Bar 7 + Sub 7, HTA7100KIT, or HT-AP710, so confirm the actual components before buying.
For an existing Bar 7 owner, purchasing a compatible sub separately is one route. For a new buyer, compare that combined cost with the bundle rather than assuming the package name or product photo guarantees that a sub is included.

Channels and audio formats
What Hi-Fi? identifies the paired system as 5.1.2-channel and lists support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. These formats can provide height effects with compatible content, but format support alone does not guarantee the same immersive result in every room or with every source.

Physical fit
What Hi-Fi? lists the soundbar at 6 × 95 × 13 cm and 4.6 kg, and the subwoofer at 36 × 35 × 13 cm and 6.2 kg. How do the bundle and separate purchase compare?
Publication-time U.S. prices in 2026 reviews were close across outlets, but they are not live quotes. What Hi-Fi? reported £799 / $1,100 for the Bar 7 + Sub 7 and £699 / $870 for the bar alone. Tom’s Guide reported $1,099 for the bundle and $869 for the standalone bar. Use current regional listings to compare the bundle with the bar plus a separately bought sub; availability and prices can change.
| Option | What it includes | Reported U.S. price in cited 2026 review | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bar 7 alone | HT-A7100 soundbar; no subwoofer | $869 in What Hi-Fi? and $869 in Tom’s Guide | Buyers who want the bar now and may add bass later, or who do not need a separate subwoofer. |
| Bar 7 + Sub 7 bundle | HT-A7100 soundbar and wireless Sub 7 | $1,100 in What Hi-Fi? and $1,099 in Tom’s Guide | Buyers who want the system’s companion sub from the outset and prefer one package. |
| Bar 7 plus separately bought compatible sub | HT-A7100 and a compatible subwoofer purchased separately | Not stated as a combined separate-purchase total in the cited reviews | Existing Bar 7 owners or buyers who want to choose a different supported subwoofer. |
The small difference between the outlets’ bundle figures is consistent with publication-time reporting, not evidence that either is the current price. Calculate the actual total in your region, including any delivery or other costs shown at checkout.

Does adding the subwoofer make it a no-brainer?
The reviews do not give a single verdict for every configuration. What Hi-Fi? tested the bar with the optional Sub 7 and praised the paired package’s balanced, engaging sound. Tom’s Guide says its reviewer tested the subwoofer version and reports clear dialogue, powerful bass, and impressive surround sound. TechRadar’s more critical comments about bass and spatial rendering concern the standalone bar; they should not be treated as a test of the Bar 7 + Sub 7 package.
That distinction matters if you are deciding whether to spend more for the complete system. The sub is the relevant addition if you want more dedicated low-frequency output, but it also takes floor space and may be less welcome in a small room or a home where bass travels to neighbours. If you mostly watch dialogue-led programmes at modest volume, the standalone bar may be enough; if films and music benefit from stronger bass, evaluate the full bundle rather than relying on reviews of the bar alone.

Which subwoofers are compatible with the Bar 7?
Sony’s compatibility matrix lists Sub 7, Sub 8, Sub 9, and legacy SA-SW3 and SA-SW5 as compatible with the Bar 7. Compatibility does not mean these models are interchangeable in price, size, or performance. Compare the exact model and current local listing, and do not mistake a Sub 8 price for the price of a Sub 7.

Its displayed price was $349.99 when accessed in 2026; that is a volatile listing for Sub 8, not a Sub 7 price or a current price guarantee. Sony also lists Rear 8 speakers as a separate surround expansion, not as a subwoofer.

Who should buy the bundle, and who should choose another route?
- Choose the Bar 7 + Sub 7 bundle if you want the complete bar-and-sub system from the start, have a place for the sub, and the current bundle price makes sense against separate purchases.
- Choose the standalone Bar 7 if you are comfortable without a separate subwoofer for now, want to spread out the purchase, or need to assess how the bar fits your room before expanding.
- Consider a different compatible subwoofer if you already own the bar or have a specific reason to select Sub 8, Sub 9, SA-SW3, or SA-SW5. Verify model compatibility, software requirements, local availability, and total cost.
- Look at a separate surround expansion only if adding rear speakers addresses a need distinct from bass; Rear 8 is a surround option, not a replacement for the subwoofer.
