The Sony Bravia 9 II is the most convincing RGB Mini-LED television yet. Its independently controlled red, green and blue LEDs deliver exceptional brightness, wide color volume and remarkably controlled blooming, making it a standout for bright rooms and very large screens. It does not universally beat OLED: OLED still offers finer pixel-level contrast, stronger off-axis consistency and a slimmer design. But the Bravia 9 II is a genuine showcase for what RGB backlighting can do.
Sony announced the Bravia 9 II on May 27, 2026. Independent measurements and reviews position it as the Mini-LED TV to beat for viewers who want OLED-like color without giving up sustained LCD brightness.
What makes the Bravia 9 II different
Sony’s Backlight Master Drive Pro uses separate red, green and blue LEDs in each dimming zone. Conventional Mini-LED televisions generally use white or blue LEDs with a quantum-dot layer to create color. By controlling the three primary colors directly, the Bravia 9 II aims to increase color volume, brightness and accuracy at the same time.

That architecture matters most in scenes that combine intense color with high brightness. The set can keep saturated reds, greens and blues vivid instead of washing them toward white, while local dimming controls the backlight behind dark areas. RTINGS describes the design as RGB LEDs assigned to each dimming zone rather than a conventional white/blue Mini-LED and quantum-dot stack.

Brightness and picture quality
The 65-inch model tested by Tom’s Guide reached 3,903 nits in a 10% HDR window, an unusually high peak for a consumer television. Its measured UHDA-P3 coverage was 99.18%, and input lag measured 9.8 milliseconds. These are Tom’s Guide laboratory results from 2026, not Sony’s rated specifications.
| Measurement or feature | Bravia 9 II result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Peak HDR brightness | 3,903 nits | Tom’s Guide measurement in a 10% window, 2026 |
| UHDA-P3 coverage | 99.18% | Tom’s Guide measurement, 2026 |
| Input lag | 9.8 ms | Tom’s Guide measurement, 2026 |
| Dimming zones | 1,530 | What Hi-Fi? 65-inch test model specification |
In viewing tests, Tom’s Guide reported controlled shadows, vivid color, smooth gradations and nearly zero visible blooming in difficult scenes. The anti-reflective coating also makes the television particularly effective in sunlit rooms. What Hi-Fi? called it the best picture it had seen from a backlit TV and found that its brightness gives RGB Mini-LED a clear advantage over OLED when bright content fills much of the screen.
Bravia 9 II versus OLED
The choice is not simply “newer technology versus older technology.” Each display type wins in different conditions.

| Picture or hardware factor | Bravia 9 II | OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Peak and full-screen brightness | Major strength; sustained brightness suits daylight and large bright scenes | Usually less effective when most of the screen is bright |
| Black level and blooming | Very strong local dimming with near-zero blooming in reported tests | Pixel-level control remains more precise |
| Color volume | RGB LEDs maintain saturated color at high brightness | Excellent color, but high-area brightness is not its main advantage |
| Isolated highlights against black | Strong, but not as precise as OLED at the pixel level | OLED remains superior |
| Viewing angles | Some contrast loss when viewed off-axis | More consistent across wider seating angles |
| Motion and gaming latency | 9.8 ms measured input lag; supports 4K/120, VRR and ALLM | Model-dependent; many OLED sets also support these features |
| Available sizes | 65, 75, 85 and 115 inches | Varies by model and manufacturer |
| Chassis depth | 1.75 inches on the tested 65-inch set | OLED designs are generally slimmer |
What Hi-Fi? concludes that OLED remains the more complete choice for most viewers because of its pixel-level precision, three-dimensional depth in dark scenes, isolated highlights and viewing-angle consistency. The Bravia 9 II is the better fit when a room is bright, the screen will be very large, or you prefer to avoid OLED while retaining vivid, high-end color.
Models, prices and physical specifications
Tom’s Guide reported the following US launch prices. Prices, availability and firmware can change, so treat these as launch figures rather than current offers.
| Screen size | US launch price | Model information |
|---|---|---|
| 65 inches | $3,599.99 | K65XR90M2; tested configuration |
| 75 inches | $4,599.99 | Model designation not stated in the cited specifications |
| 85 inches | $6,499.99 | Model designation not stated in the cited specifications |
| 115 inches | $30,999 at launch; $30,999.99 MSRP on Sony’s US page | K115XR90M2 |
The 65-inch test chassis measured 1.75 inches thick and weighed 58.6 pounds. A 115-inch screen is a specialty luxury purchase at roughly $31,000, not a mainstream value option. The 85-inch model is the more practical choice for buyers who want an unusually large image without entering the 115-inch price category.

A certified 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 cable is appropriate for the set’s 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM capabilities.
Other documented connections include eARC and an optical audio output. Check the on-screen input labels and your receiver’s capabilities before assuming every port supports the same bandwidth.

Which Bravia 9 II size should you buy?
65 inches
Choose the 65-inch K65XR90M2 if you want the full RGB Mini-LED feature set at the lowest launch price in the range and your seating distance suits a conventional living-room screen.
75 inches
The 75-inch version adds immersion while remaining far less expensive than the 115-inch flagship. It is a sensible middle ground for bright rooms where OLED’s size or full-screen brightness is limiting.
85 inches
The 85-inch model is the strongest fit for buyers who prioritize a cinema-scale image and sustained brightness but cannot justify the 115-inch model’s luxury pricing.
115 inches
At $30,999.99 MSRP in the United States, the 115-inch K115XR90M2 is for dedicated theaters, large hospitality spaces or buyers treating the display as a statement purchase. Its price makes it a specialty product rather than a value recommendation.
Important limitations
- Only two HDMI inputs provide 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, which can constrain multi-console setups.
- Contrast decreases slightly when the screen is viewed from an angle compared with OLED.
- OLED still has the edge for pixel-level black control, isolated highlights and dark-room depth.
- No cited source provides a long-term burn-in, durability or multi-week ownership test, so the Bravia 9 II should not be described as burn-in-proof or guaranteed to last longer than OLED.
- Prices, stock, software behavior and firmware features are volatile and should be checked immediately before purchase.
Verdict
The Bravia 9 II earns its flagship status by solving the traditional Mini-LED trade-off more convincingly than previous LCD designs. RGB control, a measured 3,903-nit HDR peak, nearly complete UHDA-P3 coverage, strong anti-reflection and controlled blooming make it exceptional for bright rooms and large-format viewing. OLED remains the safer all-around choice for dark-room purists, wide seating layouts and the thinnest possible installation. For everyone else—especially buyers seeking 85 or 115 inches—the Bravia 9 II is the RGB Mini-LED TV to beat in 2026.
