Sony Bank has received conditional approval for a proposed U.S. national trust-bank subsidiary that could issue U.S.-dollar stablecoins for PlayStation and other Sony services. The charter is not final, and no token can be issued until the OCC and other regulators grant all required approvals.
What Sony filed—and what was approved
Sony Bank applied to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a U.S. national trust-bank subsidiary named Connectia Trust, National Association. Sony Financial Group’s announcement on July 6, 2026, said the OCC had granted the application conditional approval.

That is an important distinction from receiving a final bank charter. Connectia Trust still needs the OCC’s final approval and other authorizations before it can conduct business. Sony’s announcement explicitly says that no activity—including issuing stablecoins—will begin until every required approval has been obtained.

Sony expects the plan to have an immaterial effect on consolidated results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. That disclosure describes the near-term financial impact, not a forecast of a token launch or user adoption.

Why PlayStation is part of the plan
Sony’s 2025 Investor Day Q&A said the group was considering using its Banking-as-a-Service function across Sony companies and issuing stablecoins “for uses such as a means of payment for PlayStation users.” The same material discussed working with Sony businesses that have overseas customer bases through a U.S. trust subsidiary.
PlayStation is therefore a named potential use case, not proof that a PlayStation-branded coin has already been designed or approved. Sony’s wording points to a broader Sony ecosystem strategy that could include digital-content businesses and other services. It does not say that every PlayStation purchase will require the stablecoin, that the token will replace cards or wallets, or that it will be available in every country.

How the U.S. regulatory process affects the launch
The OCC’s GENIUS Act rulemaking proposal, published February 25, 2026, covers the requirements that would apply to permitted payment-stablecoin issuers. Its scope includes reserve assets, redemption, risk management, audits, reporting, supervision, custody, applications, examinations, and capital and operational safeguards.

The GENIUS Act was enacted on July 18, 2025, and generally bars anyone other than a permitted issuer from issuing a U.S. payment stablecoin. Connectia Trust’s conditional approval does not itself make Sony a permitted live-token issuer. Sony must still satisfy the final charter conditions and obtain the other approvals described in its announcement.

Conditional approval versus final approval
- Application: Sony Bank submitted the proposal for a national trust-bank subsidiary.
- Conditional decision: The OCC conditionally approved the application as of Sony’s July 6, 2026 announcement.
- Remaining authorization: The OCC’s final approval and other required authorizations must be completed.
- Commercial activity: Only after those approvals can Connectia Trust begin activities such as stablecoin issuance.
What is known about the proposed coin
Sony has described the asset as a stablecoin denominated in U.S. dollars and said Connectia Trust would issue and manage it. That establishes the intended currency denomination and the proposed issuer structure. It does not establish that the coin is already circulating or that its reserves will consist of a particular mix of cash, Treasury securities or other assets.
Sony has not publicly identified a ticker, blockchain, reserve composition, redemption mechanics, customer fees, supported jurisdictions, interoperability plans or consumer-facing wallet. Those details matter because they determine how the token could be bought, redeemed, transferred and used at checkout.

When could a PlayStation stablecoin launch?
Sony has not committed to a launch date in its official announcements. A July 9, 2026 report by The Block said a 2027 launch was possible, subject to final approval, but that timing was not a Sony commitment. Until the approval process is complete, any specific release month, supported console, store integration or payment timetable is speculative.
For now, PlayStation users should not expect a new Sony coin to appear in their account, wallet or checkout options. Existing payment methods and store policies remain the practical way to buy games, add-ons and subscriptions unless Sony later announces a live product.

Questions Sony still needs to answer
- What will the token be called, and will it have a public ticker?
- Which blockchain or blockchains will carry it?
- What assets will back each token, and how often will reserves be audited or reported?
- Will holders have a direct one-to-one redemption right for U.S. dollars, and who will process redemptions?
- Which Sony services will accept it beyond the possible PlayStation use case?
- Where will customers be allowed to use it, and what identity, age and compliance checks will apply?
- What transaction, conversion or withdrawal fees will apply?
The central takeaway is that Sony has moved beyond a purely speculative idea: it has a named, wholly owned U.S. trust-bank subsidiary with conditional OCC approval and USD 40 million in stated capital. But the project is still a regulated proposal, not an operating bank or an available PlayStation payment token.
