Sony’s newly announced Midnight Black PS5 is a Japan-market, digital-only console—not a globally available color option. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black (model CFI-2200B02S) costs ¥55,000 including tax and goes on sale in Japan on November 19, 2026. Sony says it can be used only with the console language set to Japanese and a PlayStation account whose country/region is Japan.
Black PS5 price and release date
Sony’s suggested retail price in Japan is ¥55,000, including tax. The console is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026. Reservations are set to begin October 20 through PlayStation retailers and e-commerce sites in Japan; Sony’s announcement does not confirm retailer stock or preorder listings.
This is a Japanese-market price and release. Sony has not announced that this model will be sold outside Japan.
Can you use the Japanese black PS5 outside Japan?
Sony limits the model to use in Japan. Both the console’s language and the PlayStation account’s country/region must be set to Japan. That makes it a poor fit for buyers who need another console language or an account registered in a different country, even if they can obtain the hardware.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sony’s announcement does not establish broader international availability or explain exceptions to these requirements. Check Sony’s October 13, 2026 announcement for the stated conditions before considering an import.
What features does the Midnight Black PS5 include?
The CFI-2200B02S is a digital-only PS5 with an 825GB SSD. Some of that storage is used by system software, so the capacity available for games and other content is lower. Sony says the model retains the PS5’s high-speed SSD, 3D audio, and PS4 backward compatibility, as well as DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

How does its price compare with other Japanese PS5 models?
Sony’s March 27, 2026 Japan price update lists the regular PS5 at ¥97,980 and the regular PS5 Digital Edition at ¥89,980, both including tax. Sony also said the Japanese-language-only Digital Edition remains ¥55,000. These are prices for different market models; they do not establish a like-for-like hardware comparison or a global PS5 price cut.

No. Sony previously announced Midnight Black covers as cosmetic accessories for the 2023 slim PS5. Its January 2024 Japanese notice identifies cover model CFI-ZCS2G01 for the CFI-2000 slim model group and says it does not fit the older CFI-1000 group. That cover is not the newly announced CFI-2200B02S console.

Sony has not confirmed that older covers fit the new model. Do not assume compatibility based on the shared color name; verify the exact console and accessory model with Sony before buying a cover.
