Virginia is a recruitable companion who appears in the island wilderness. To befriend her, keep every weapon holstered, move slowly, and let her retreat; repeated peaceful encounters eventually produce an interaction prompt. After recruitment, give her a GPS Locator, pistol, and shotgun through her inventory. She acts independently rather than accepting Kelvin-style notepad commands, but she can guard, forage, relax, and use both firearms without consuming ammunition.
Who Virginia is and why she matters
Virginia is a cautious survivor encountered outdoors during exploration of the island. She is not recruited by defeating her, completing a quest, or selecting a dialogue tree. The relationship develops through several non-threatening meetings. Drawing a weapon or rushing toward her can make her flee and delay the interaction prompt.
Once recruited, Virginia becomes an autonomous companion. You equip and position her, but you do not assign her a detailed queue of jobs through the notepad interface used for Kelvin. Her practical value is different from Kelvin’s: she can defend an area with firearms, forage plants, and move around independently while you explore or build.
| Fact | What it means in play |
|---|---|
| Encounter | She appears in the island wilderness and may be seen relatively early while following the Team B investigation. |
| Recruitment | Peaceful, repeated encounters lead to an interaction prompt; aggression makes her retreat. |
| Control model | She is autonomous. You provide equipment and a safe operating area rather than issuing a Kelvin-style task list. |
| Weapons | She can use a pistol and a shotgun. |
| Ammunition | The companion reference states that she does not consume ammunition when firing either weapon. |
| Tracking | A GPS Locator assigned to her places her position on your GPS Tracker. |
| Achievement | Keeping Virginia and Kelvin alive through the end of the story contributes to Keep Your Friends Close. |
| Listed age | 20, according to a game-database character attribute; this is descriptive data, not a gameplay statistic. |
How to find Virginia
There is no fixed indoor recruitment room to clear. Search the island wilderness as you investigate Team B. Virginia can appear during relatively early exploration, but the exact meeting is not presented as a guaranteed, single-location spawn in the documented mechanics. Treat the first sighting as the start of a process, not as a fight.

Use this approach when she appears
- Put away every weapon. Holster your hands before closing the distance. A visible firearm makes an already cautious encounter more likely to end in a retreat.
- Walk instead of sprinting. Move slowly and leave her a clear escape route. Do not chase if she backs away.
- Let her leave. The first encounter may end with Virginia running off. That is normal and does not mean recruitment has failed.
- Return to the area later. Repeated peaceful meetings are the recruitment method. Come back after exploring elsewhere and repeat the same non-threatening behavior.
- Wait for the interaction prompt. When the game permits interaction, approach without a weapon drawn and use the prompt rather than attacking or trying to restrain her.
Patience is the important resource here. Shooting near her, swinging a tool, or pursuing her across the terrain can reset the encounter’s friendly tone. If she disappears, resume ordinary exploration and check the area again on a later pass.
How to befriend and recruit Virginia
Recruitment becomes available when the correct peaceful encounter produces an interaction prompt. Activate it to open Virginia’s inventory interaction and establish her as a companion. There is no separate gift list, reputation meter, or command tutorial required in the documented process.
What successful recruitment looks like
- The interaction prompt appears while you are close enough and unarmed.
- Using it opens an inventory handoff rather than a combat interaction.
- After the handoff, Virginia is treated as a companion and can be equipped.
- Her behavior remains self-directed; recruitment does not turn her into a character who accepts every order.
If the prompt is missing, do not interpret that as a requirement to find a special item. First check that your weapon is holstered, create more distance, and allow another peaceful encounter. The documented method depends on repeated calm contact.

Virginia cannot be managed with Kelvin’s comparable notepad command list. You cannot select a detailed instruction such as a specific gathering route, construction task, or destination and expect her to execute it on demand. Her movement and activities are autonomous.
“Follow me” therefore means managing the conditions under which she can operate, not issuing a literal follow command. Keep your base within an area she can reach, avoid treating her as a permanently stationed turret, and use a GPS Locator when you need to find her. She may guard, relax, or forage plants while you are elsewhere and can relocate herself between activities.
Practical positioning rules
- Make the base reachable. A base that is isolated from the routes she uses is harder to use as a defensive rendezvous.
- Equip before dangerous trips. Give her weapons before entering areas where you want her to contribute; do not wait until a fight has already started.
- Use the marker instead of chasing. Check the GPS Tracker to see where she has moved.
- Accept autonomous downtime. Guarding, relaxing, and foraging are listed behaviors, not signs that the companion system has broken.
How to put a GPS Tracker on Virginia
You need a GPS Locator, the small marker item used to identify people or places. Give it to Virginia through the inventory interaction, then read her position on the GPS Tracker.

Exact handoff sequence
- Obtain a GPS Locator.
- Open the locator’s icon-selection control before handing it over. Choose a distinctive icon if you want Virginia to be easy to distinguish from other markers.
- Approach Virginia and use the companion inventory interaction.
- Select the GPS Locator as the item to give her.
- Open the GPS Tracker and look for the icon you selected. As she moves, the marker shows her current position.
Choosing the icon first matters because the marker is easier to recognize when the tracker contains several points. The locator is not limited to companions: you can also mount one on a stick to create a stationary base or resource marker. That use is separate from assigning a locator to Virginia.
If Virginia is not showing on the tracker
- Confirm that you gave the locator through the inventory interaction rather than merely carrying it.
- Check that an icon was selected and that you are looking for that icon on the GPS Tracker.
- Remember that Virginia moves autonomously; a changing position is expected.
- If you used the locator on a stick, that marker is stationary and is not Virginia’s companion marker.
How to give Virginia weapons
Virginia can use both the pistol and the shotgun. The shotgun is identified in the VIP Keycard area, so obtaining it is part of normal progression toward arming her. Once a weapon is available, use the companion inventory interaction to hand it to her.
Recommended equipment steps
- Recruit Virginia first so the inventory handoff is available.
- Keep the pistol and shotgun in your inventory when you approach her.
- Open her inventory interaction and give her the pistol.
- Repeat the handoff with the shotgun when you have reached the VIP Keycard area and acquired it.
- Allow her to return to autonomous behavior; she will use the firearms when appropriate.
The companion reference states that Virginia does not consume ammunition while firing either weapon. This is particularly useful when you are conserving rounds for your own encounters. It does not mean you can skip obtaining the weapons: she still needs to be given the pistol and shotgun before she can use them.
Why arm her with both?
Giving both firearms lets her respond to more situations without requiring you to decide which weapon she should carry immediately before every encounter. The pistol is a compact option for routine defense, while the shotgun provides a different response when a close-range threat reaches the base or travel route. Her ammunition-free firing makes the loadout sustainable under the documented companion behavior.
How to use Virginia effectively
Think of Virginia as an independent defender and scout, not a programmable worker. Your job is to prepare her, keep her operating area accessible, and use the tracker to reconnect with her.

Leave her equipped near a base you regularly use, then allow her to choose when to guard or relax. Because she is not assigned a precise patrol route, do not expect a fixed firing position. A reachable base and a GPS marker are more reliable than trying to force her to stand at one doorway.

Foraging and downtime
Foraging plants is one of her listed actions. If she is not beside you, she may be gathering or relaxing rather than waiting for a command. Check the tracker before assuming she has been lost.
Exploration
Equip her before a dangerous trip and keep the locator active. The marker gives you a way to locate her after she moves independently, while her firearm capability can add defense without drawing from your ammunition supply.
Virginia versus Kelvin
The two companions solve different problems. Virginia is harder to recruit because she requires patience and repeated peaceful encounters, but she contributes armed defense. Kelvin is immediately command-oriented and focuses on gathering and building.

| Comparison | Virginia | Kelvin |
|---|---|---|
| Recruitment difficulty | Requires calm, repeated wilderness encounters before the interaction prompt appears. | Provides immediate command access through his notepad-style system after his introduction. |
| Control model | Autonomous; you equip and position her rather than assigning a detailed task list. | Accepts direct notepad commands for supported tasks. |
| Combat | Can use a pistol and shotgun; the documented companion behavior says she does not consume ammunition. | Does not fight. |
| Utility | Defense, relaxing, and plant foraging. | Gathering and building work directed by the player. |
| Tracking | Give her a GPS Locator and read her position on the GPS Tracker. | A locator can also be used for companion tracking, but Virginia’s independent movement makes the marker especially useful. |
A strong camp setup uses the strengths separately: Kelvin handles repeatable collection or construction instructions, while Virginia is equipped for defense and allowed to operate on her own.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep Virginia alive for the achievement
The Keep Your Friends Close achievement unlocks when Virginia and Kelvin are alive at the end of the story, according to the companion reference. Her survival is therefore more than a convenience if you are completing achievements.
Protection checklist
- Watch your aim around her and avoid friendly fire.
- Do not treat a downed state as proof of permanent death. Revive her when the game presents a downed companion state.
- Use the GPS marker to locate her before leaving a dangerous area or base unattended.
- Keep her armed so she can contribute defense instead of standing unprepared in a fight.
- Remember that no guaranteed recovery method after permanent death is documented; prevention is safer than relying on a late rescue.
If both companions are alive when the story reaches its ending, the documented requirement for the achievement is satisfied. The condition is about survival at the end, not about issuing a particular number of commands or keeping Virginia beside you every minute.

Troubleshooting common Virginia problems
She keeps running away
Holster your weapon, stop chasing, and leave the area. Return later and repeat a slow, peaceful approach. Running after her or approaching with a weapon drawn works against the recruitment method.
Recommended Free Tools
The interaction prompt never appears
Make sure you are unarmed and giving her room to retreat. The prompt follows repeated peaceful encounters rather than a single forced conversation, so continue exploring and revisit the wilderness meeting area.
She is not where you left her
This is expected from an autonomous companion. Check the GPS Tracker after assigning a GPS Locator. Her listed activities include guarding, relaxing, and foraging, all of which can take her away from your immediate position.
Her marker is confusing or missing
Verify that you selected a locator icon before the handoff and that you actually gave the GPS Locator through her inventory. Distinguish her moving companion marker from a locator mounted on a stick, which remains a stationary base or resource marker.
She is not firing
Confirm that the pistol or shotgun was handed to her, not merely carried by you. Also remember that you cannot issue a direct combat command; her decision to guard or engage is autonomous.
She was knocked down
Use the game’s revive interaction while she is in the downed state. If she has died permanently, the cited mechanics do not establish a guaranteed recovery method, so protecting her before that point is essential for the achievement.
Quick answers
- Where do I find Virginia? In the island wilderness while exploring the Team B investigation area; the documented encounter is not a single guaranteed indoor location.
- How do I befriend her? Holster weapons, approach slowly, let her flee, and repeat peaceful encounters until the interaction prompt appears.
- Can I order her to follow me? Not with Kelvin-style direct commands. She is autonomous; use equipment, accessible bases, and a GPS Locator to manage her presence.
- Can she use the pistol and shotgun? Yes. Give her both through the inventory interaction.
- Does she use ammunition? The companion reference says she does not consume ammunition when firing either weapon.
- How do I track her? Select an icon on a GPS Locator, give it to her, and read the resulting marker on your GPS Tracker.

Bottom line
Recruit Virginia by being patient rather than forceful: holster your weapon, let her retreat, and repeat the encounter until the prompt appears. Afterward, equip her with the pistol and shotgun, assign a clearly identifiable GPS Locator, and treat her as an autonomous defender and forager. Keeping her—and Kelvin—alive through the ending is the documented path to Keep Your Friends Close.
