Keep a dependable water source and a protected place to sleep near your base, eat before Fullness is empty, and save portable supplies for caves, dungeons and winter. Hunger and thirst are the two meters that can directly drain health when completely depleted. Fatigue does not directly injure you, but it reduces maximum vitality and makes travel and combat less forgiving.
The safest routine is simple: establish shelter near a lake, river, pond or stream; carry both renewable food and packaged food; drink and eat before the warning state; and sleep in a shelter rather than in the open. If either hunger or thirst reaches zero, restore it immediately because the damage is periodic and the two damage sources stack.

What the three survival meters do
Fullness, Hydration and Energy are related, but they do not have the same consequences. Treating them as interchangeable is a common reason a character dies while travelling, fighting or trying to sleep.
| Meter | What lowers it | What happens at a critical level | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fullness (hunger) | Time passes and food is not consumed. | When hunger is fully depleted and the character is dying of hunger, the current stats reference reports 2 health points of damage every 10 seconds. Hunger damage can stack with dehydration damage. | Eat before the meter reaches the danger state; restore it immediately at zero. |
| Hydration (thirst) | Time passes and the character does not drink. | At complete depletion, the current stats reference reports 2 health points of damage every 10 seconds. This damage stacks with hunger damage. | Drink regularly, using nearby natural water for routine days. |
| Energy (fatigue) | Activity, and especially active hunger or thirst. | Below 25%, the HUD marks the character as actively tired. Fatigue does not directly deal damage, but it lowers maximum vitality. | Rest or sleep before a long trip, cave run or fight. |
The practical distinction is important: an exhausted character is less capable, while a starving or dehydrated character is losing health. Empty hunger and thirst together are especially dangerous because both periodic damage effects apply at the same time.

Why hunger and thirst can kill you while you sleep
Sleeping does not cancel a depleted meter. If Fullness or Hydration is already empty, the character can continue taking periodic damage during the attempt to rest. Because each source is reported as 2 points every 10 seconds once the associated dying state begins, allowing both to reach zero creates a combined emergency rather than a single problem.
There is a second risk: exposed sleep can be interrupted by nearby enemies. An interruption means you may wake without getting the recovery you expected, while still having low meters and a dangerous area around you. Put the bed in a defensible shelter, check the immediate area before using it, and keep a fire or torch available so you can respond if a threat approaches.

Use this pre-sleep check:
- Drink if Hydration is low; do not begin a sleep attempt with an empty meter.
- Eat if Fullness is low, particularly after a fight or a long run.
- Move the sleeping spot into a tent, sleeping bag setup or built shelter.
- Choose a location with practical access to water and food, not merely the shortest route to the next objective.
- Keep a light source ready for an interruption or a night-time check.
A reliable early-game survival loop
A good first base reduces all three problems at once. The early-game approach below uses natural water for daily hydration, renewable food for ordinary days and a portable reserve for places where resupply is uncertain.
- Set up near water and shelter. A lake, river, pond or stream gives you a repeatable everyday hydration option. Build or place your sleeping arrangement nearby, but select a defensible position rather than sleeping directly in the open.
- Organize two food categories. Use renewable supplies such as hunted animals, fish, berries and other edible plants during normal travel. Keep packaged food for cave and dungeon trips, where returning to a base for a meal may be impractical.
- Use the meters as timing signals. Eat and drink before Fullness or Hydration reaches its danger state. Waiting for a completely empty meter turns a routine resupply into a health emergency.
- Sleep before Energy bottoms out. Tents, sleeping bags and built shelters provide places to rest. Resting earlier preserves more capacity for a fight or a long journey than pushing on until the HUD marks you actively tired.
- Prepare before winter. Store food ahead of the season and do not make a fish trap your only supply. The official Patch 01 note says fish traps function only when placed in water and when the current season is not winter.
- Handle empty meters as an emergency. Eat or drink first, then move to safety and rest once the immediate health loss has stopped.
This loop works because it separates routine needs from expedition needs. Natural water and renewable food support a base; portable items cover the gaps created by caves, dungeons, distance and seasonal changes.
Hydration: when to use natural water and when to carry supplies
Use nearby natural water for ordinary days
When available, a lake, river, pond or stream is the dependable everyday answer to thirst. Building your routine around a nearby source means you do not have to consume or carry your portable reserve for every short trip. It also makes a base more useful as a staging point: return, drink, eat, rest and leave with full meters.

Natural water is most valuable when you can reach it without crossing a dangerous area. Include the source in your base decision, alongside shelter and food access, rather than treating water as an afterthought.

Save portable water for places without a refill routine
Portable water should be reserved for caves, dungeons and winter according to the early-game guidance. Those situations remove one or more advantages of a base: you may be underground, far from a known source or operating during a season in which a food plan no longer works. Enter such trips with a deliberate reserve instead of assuming you can find a convenient drink after the meter falls.
Before leaving, ask three questions:
- Where is the next dependable water source if the trip takes longer than expected?
- Is this route a cave or dungeon where returning to the base for a drink would be costly?
- Could winter make the normal resupply plan unreliable?
If the answer to any of these questions is yes, treat portable water as expedition equipment, not as a day-to-day convenience.
Food: renewable supplies versus packaged rations
Renewable food for normal travel
Hunted animals, fish, berries and other edible plants are useful for routine days because they can be obtained repeatedly during ordinary play. Their main advantage is repeatability: you can maintain Fullness without exhausting a finite emergency stockpile. Use them around a base and on short journeys where you can return to familiar foraging or hunting areas.
Packaged food for long expeditions
Packaged food belongs in the reserve you carry into caves and dungeons. These trips can outlast a planned schedule, and the cost of leaving to resupply is higher underground or far from shelter. Consuming packaged items on every short outing may leave you with no margin when an expedition runs long.

Compare food and drink on four axes
The best item is not simply the one you can use immediately. Evaluate each option by renewability, portability, safety and seasonal reliability.
| Axis | Question to ask | How it affects a decision |
|---|---|---|
| Renewability | Can you obtain it repeatedly during normal play? | Renewable food is suited to base life; finite supplies are better protected for emergencies. |
| Portability | Can you carry enough for a cave or dungeon trip? | Portable food and water cover routes where returning to a base is inefficient. |
| Safety | Does it restore the meter without sickness or damage? | Prefer supplies that restore Fullness or Hydration predictably; avoid relying on an option whose effects you have not confirmed. |
| Seasonal reliability | Will the source still work in winter? | A plan that fails seasonally needs a stored replacement before winter begins. |
Use the table as a planning tool rather than a ranking. A renewable source can still be the wrong choice for a cave if it cannot be carried, while a portable ration can be wasteful for a short walk beside your base.
Energy and fatigue: restoring capacity before a fight
Energy is restored by sleeping, resting and some foods. It drains faster during activity and drains rapidly when the character is actively hungry or thirsty. That interaction explains why a player can feel exhausted soon after starting a trip: low Fullness or Hydration accelerates the Energy problem.
The HUD marks the character as actively tired below 25% Energy. Fatigue itself does not directly damage health, but it lowers maximum vitality. In practice, entering a fight or a long traversal while tired leaves less room for mistakes even when the health bar is not being directly reduced by fatigue.
Use rest as part of travel planning
- Sleep or rest before setting out on a demanding route instead of waiting for Energy to reach the bottom.
- Check Fullness and Hydration before resting; low meters make Energy drain faster and can turn sleep into an interruption or damage problem.
- After a strenuous activity, return to a shelter, eat and drink, then rest before beginning another long segment.
- Keep a light source close to the sleeping position so an interruption does not leave you reacting in darkness.
Do not mistake a full Energy meter for complete readiness. A character can have energy available while hunger or thirst is approaching its damage threshold. Read all three meters together.

Shelter and sleep locations
Tents and sleeping bags
Tents and sleeping bags provide practical rest locations when a permanent structure is not yet available. Place them where enemies are less likely to interrupt you and where water and food are within a manageable return distance. A temporary camp that is safe and supplied is more valuable than a convenient bed in an exposed position.
Built shelters
A built shelter gives you a repeatable place to rest as your base develops. Its value is not only the bed: positioning it near water, renewable food and a light source creates a compact loop for restoring all three needs. Keep the approach defensible so a sleep attempt is less likely to be interrupted by nearby enemies.

Sleeping in the open carries the highest interruption risk because nearby enemies can break the attempt. If you must use an exposed location, first restore food and water, scan the immediate area, and keep a torch or fire available. Treat this as a stopgap rather than the standard overnight plan.

Winter changes the reliability of food plans. The official Patch 01 announcement states: “Fish trap should now work and catch fish (every 5-10 minutes) as long as it’s placed in water and the current season is not winter.” That statement gives two conditions and one interval: the trap must be in water, the season must not be winter, and the announced catch cycle is every 5–10 minutes.
Therefore, a fish trap can supplement supplies outside winter but should not be your sole winter strategy. Store food before winter arrives and keep portable provisions for travel. If a trap appears inactive, check its placement in water and the current season before assuming it is broken; winter is an explicit limitation in the patch note.

What to do when a meter reaches zero
Empty Fullness or Hydration is an emergency because periodic damage has already begun. Use this order to stop the situation from escalating:

- Restore the depleted need. Eat when Fullness is empty and drink when Hydration is empty. If both are empty, address both immediately with the supplies you have.
- Move to a defensible position. Do not begin a vulnerable sleep attempt beside an active threat.
- Recheck all three meters. Confirm that hunger and thirst have stopped causing the emergency and that Energy is not still critically low.
- Rest or sleep under cover. Once immediate damage is addressed, use a tent, sleeping bag or built shelter and keep a light source ready.
Hunger and thirst damage stack, so delaying one meter while treating the other can continue the health loss. The safest emergency response is to restore both before committing to a long retreat or a fight.
Planning a base and an expedition
Base checklist
- Natural water within a practical routine route.
- A tent, sleeping bag or built shelter in a defensible location.
- Renewable food sources such as hunted animals, fish, berries or other edible plants.
- A fire or torch for visibility around the sleeping area.
- Stored food before winter, with no dependence on a fish trap alone.
Cave or dungeon checklist
- Portable water reserved specifically for the trip.
- Packaged food rather than relying only on supplies that require a return to the surface.
- Enough Energy to handle activity, with a rest plan before entering.
- A route back to shelter if the expedition takes longer than expected.
- A decision point for turning around before Fullness or Hydration reaches the danger state.
Daily decision rule
Stay near the base when your supplies are renewable and the meters are stable. Carry reserves when distance, darkness, caves, dungeons or winter remove predictable resupply. The farther you are from water and shelter, the earlier you should eat, drink and rest.
Common mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting until the hunger or thirst meter is empty. | Periodic health damage has begun, and the two effects can stack. | Eat and drink before the danger state; treat zero as an emergency. |
| Using all packaged food on short trips. | No reserve remains for caves, dungeons or unexpected delays. | Use renewable food for ordinary days and protect packaged supplies for expeditions. |
| Sleeping beside a threat or in the open by default. | Enemies can interrupt sleep, leaving Energy unrestored. | Use a defensible shelter and keep a fire or torch available. |
| Assuming low Energy is the same as direct damage. | Fatigue lowers maximum vitality but is not itself a direct damage source. | Rest before demanding activity while continuing to monitor hunger and thirst. |
| Relying on a fish trap through winter. | The Patch 01 note limits the trap to seasons other than winter. | Store food beforehand and carry a winter reserve. |
| Ignoring the interaction between meters. | Hunger and thirst accelerate Energy loss during active depletion. | Restore food and water before attempting a long fight, journey or sleep. |
Version and evidence note
The maintained Sons of the Forest statistics reference is marked Patch 16 Hotfix 3 (2025). Mechanics and balance can change in later updates, so check the current statistics reference after a patch if a meter behaves differently from the values above. The 2-point, 10-second damage figures and the 25% tired threshold are presented with that version context rather than as permanent guarantees.
The fish-trap conditions quoted here come from Endnight Games’ official Patch 01 announcement. They describe the stated behavior for that patch: placement in water, a non-winter season and catches every 5–10 minutes. Seasonal systems can be revised, so use the current patch notes when planning a long-term food source.
