The Shovel is at the end of Shovel Cave, at the meeting point of two rivers below the mountain crash site, west or northwest of the snowy mountain. You must bring the Rope Gun to cross the cave’s first traversal gap and the Rebreather to pass its flooded sections. At the far end, pick up the Shovel beside a deceased worker.

What you need to know before starting
The Shovel is not a surface pickup and cannot be obtained from a random campsite or ordinary container. Shovel Cave is its only acquisition location. The cave is deliberately placed behind two traversal requirements, so attempting it without both items will stop your progress.

- Rebreather: required for the long underwater sections deeper inside.
- Basic expedition supplies: bring enough food, water and healing items for an extended cave trip. The route combines vertical traversal and prolonged swimming, leaving few opportunities to resupply.
The Rope Gun and Rebreather are not optional conveniences. If either is missing, turn back and obtain it before committing to the cave.

Where Shovel Cave is located
Look for the entrance at the confluence of two rivers below the mountain crash site. On the island map, this places the cave west or northwest of the snowy mountain. A separate walkthrough also identifies the cave as west of the snowy mountain and confirms the same two prerequisites.
Use the river junction as your practical landmark rather than searching for a surface shovel icon. The entrance is associated with the cave mouth and its blocked opening, not with a shovel lying outside. Once you reach the river confluence, inspect the rock opening for the route into the cave.
How to get the Shovel: step-by-step route
- Secure the Rope Gun and Rebreather first. Check your inventory before travelling to the cave. The Rope Gun handles the first major gap; the Rebreather handles the submerged passages.
- Travel to the river confluence below the crash site. Approach the area west or northwest of the snowy mountain and follow the two rivers until they meet. The cave entrance is at that junction.
- Enter the cave and reach the initial gap. The opening route is obstructed by stalagmites and leads to a gap crossed by a zipline. This is the section for which the Rope Gun is required.
- Use the zipline traversal. Equip the Rope Gun and cross the opening gap. If the route cannot be completed, verify that you are using the Rope Gun rather than trying to jump the opening.
- Continue until the cave floods. The deeper route contains fully flooded stretches. Equip the Rebreather before entering the long underwater sections.
- Swim through the submerged passages. Follow the cave route underwater and resurface whenever the passage allows. The Rebreather is what makes this section traversable; without it, the submerged route is not a realistic progression path.
- Reach the far end of the cave. Continue beyond the flooded sections until the passage opens at the cave’s endpoint.
- Pick up the Shovel beside the deceased worker. The tool is located next to the body at the far end. It is not hidden in a separate container or found on the surface outside the cave.
What the Shovel does
The Shovel removes soil from marked diggable patches. Its important function is excavation: it exposes entrances, graves and buried points of interest that remain inaccessible from the surface until you use the tool.

Buried maintenance bunkers
Several maintenance-bunker entrances are covered by soil. Digging them out opens underground areas that contain major progression items. The Shovel therefore acts as a progression gate rather than merely an optional utility item.

The exact item found at a given site depends on the bunker, but the overall role is consistent: excavation converts a sealed surface hatch into an explorable location.
Graves and buried objects
The Shovel also opens graves that contain important equipment. Digging the marked grave containing the Shotgun reveals the weapon. A separate buried Mercenary grave contains a body carrying a GPS Locator. These objects cannot be collected by simply examining the soil; the dig action is required.
Why the Shovel matters for progression
Many players first treat the Shovel as a late-game curiosity because it is found in a demanding cave. In practice, it unlocks several branches of island exploration. Maintenance A, B and C connect excavation to bunker progression, while the Shotgun grave and Mercenary grave connect it to weapons and navigation equipment.

The Rope Gun and Rebreather solve the immediate traversal problem; the Shovel then lets you open buried locations that provide access to the Maintenance Keycard, Firefighter Axe, Compound Bow, Revolver, Shotgun and GPS Locator. If a map marker or walkthrough points to a dig site, having the Shovel is the requirement that determines whether the location can actually be entered.

Shovel, Rope Gun and Rebreather: what each tool is for
These three items form a progression chain, but they solve different problems. The Rope Gun is a traversal tool, the Rebreather is an underwater-access tool and the Shovel is an excavation tool.

The prerequisite burden is different as well. Shovel Cave requires both the Rope Gun and Rebreather, while those items are obtained earlier in the progression chain. If you are choosing what to pursue next, obtain the traversal tools first; the Shovel cannot substitute for either one.
Using the Shovel as a weapon
The Shovel is equippable and can be swung in combat. Its attack speed is reported as high, but its damage is low, and the item is considerably less effective than dedicated weapons. Treat it as an improvised emergency weapon rather than your planned combat loadout.
- Use the Shovel primarily at dig sites.
- Do not discard stronger weapons on the assumption that the Shovel replaces them.
- If you are attacked while carrying it, switching to a dedicated weapon is generally the better combat decision.
Its melee capability does not change its progression role: the value of acquiring it comes from what it lets you excavate.

Troubleshooting the Shovel run
You cannot cross the first gap
Confirm that the item in your inventory is the Rope Gun. The cave’s initial opening uses a zipline traversal; attempting to jump or climb around the gap will not replace that requirement. If the route still appears blocked, return to the cave entrance and look for the zipline path across the stalagmite-obstructed opening.
You run out of air underwater
The flooded route requires the Rebreather. Equip it before entering the long submerged section, not after you are already underwater. If you entered without it, retreat to a dry area and leave the cave to obtain the item before trying again.
You cannot find the Shovel at the entrance
The Shovel is at the far end of the cave, beside a deceased worker. The surface entrance and the first chambers do not contain the pickup. Continue through the zipline section and the flooded passages until you reach the endpoint.

A bunker hatch or grave will not open
Look for a marked diggable patch and use the Shovel there. Buried hatches and graves are not opened by striking them with an axe or by interacting with the soil empty-handed. If there is no dig prompt, verify that you are at a designated dig site rather than an ordinary patch of ground.

You expected the Shovel to be a strong weapon
Its melee performance is limited: high speed but low damage, and weaker overall than dedicated weapons. Keep it because of its excavation function, not as a primary combat upgrade.
A practical checklist
- Rope Gun equipped or available in your inventory.
- Rebreather available before entering the flooded route.
- Route planned to the two-river confluence below the mountain crash site.
- Map orientation checked: the cave is west or northwest of the snowy mountain.
- Enough healing, food and water for a cave expedition.
- Inventory space for the Shovel and any items obtained from newly opened sites.
- After collecting the Shovel, mark maintenance bunkers and graves you could not previously excavate.
What to do after collecting it
Once the Shovel is in your inventory, revisit buried points of interest rather than continuing to search for another copy. Start with the maintenance-bunker dig sites if you want progression items, then excavate the Shotgun grave and the Mercenary grave for their respective rewards. The Shovel’s acquisition location does not change the locations of those dig sites; it simply makes their buried entrances and objects accessible.
