Most Sons of the Forest server problems become much easier to solve when you identify the symptom first. A server that exits during startup needs different checks from one that runs but stays out of the browser, while a loading hang often points to world-save synchronization. Use the port map, logs, configuration-path checks, build matching, and backup procedure below in that order.
Make a short incident note before changing anything: what players see, whether the process remains running, the last console message, which save slot was active, and whether the problem began after an update or configuration edit. This prevents a browser-discovery problem from being mistaken for a corrupted world and gives you a comparison point after each fix.
Start with the symptom, not a random setting
Write down exactly what happens and when it happens. Avoid changing several settings at once; otherwise you cannot tell which change fixed or caused the problem. The same symptom can have different causes depending on whether it affects every player, only remote players, or only one save slot.

Separate local and remote tests. A successful connection from the host machine or another computer on the same LAN proves that the process is alive, but it does not prove that Internet NAT, the public address, or the provider-assigned port is correct. An outside test is required for a public server.

Use the correct port map
For a home-hosted dedicated server, the current port reference separates three UDP services. All three must be allowed inbound in the host firewall and forwarded by the router’s NAT rule to the machine running the server.

Use the exact port values configured by your installation or hosting panel. A provider may expose a public port that differs from the internal value; in that case, forward the provider-assigned external port to the server’s configured internal port as the panel specifies. Do not copy a port from a different server instance without checking which instance is active.
Forward the ports safely
- Give the server computer a stable private IP address, either with a DHCP reservation on the router or a correctly configured static address.
- Create inbound UDP rules for 8766, 27016, and 9700 in the host firewall, allowing the dedicated-server executable or the documented server process.
- Create matching UDP port-forwarding rules on the router, sending each port to that private IP.
- Start the server and confirm the console shows it listening without a bind or address-in-use error.
- Test from a network outside the server’s LAN, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside the same network can hide a NAT or hairpinning problem.
Check the destination address in every rule after a router reboot or DHCP change. A forward can remain present while pointing at an old private address. Likewise, a host firewall rule can appear enabled while applying to a different executable or network profile than the one used by the running service.
Do not assume that opening the game port alone is sufficient. Browser discovery and save synchronization use different UDP paths.
When the server will not start or exits immediately
Read the console and log before editing anything
The last console lines are the most useful evidence. Record the final error and whether shutdown occurs while reading configuration, binding a port, or loading a world. Make one change, restart, and compare the new output with the previous attempt.
Keep the last successful startup output as a baseline. If the service is managed by a panel or wrapper, read the panel Console as well as any server log it exposes; the wrapper may show the reason for shutdown even when the game process reports only a generic failure. Log visibility is itself a documented server setting, so confirm that logging is enabled enough to capture the startup sequence.
Repair invalid dedicatedserver.cfg JSON
A missing comma, mismatched quotation mark, or unmatched brace can stop startup before networking is initialized. Stop the service, copy the file for safekeeping, and run the active file through a JSON validator. Correct only the syntax error, save the file, and restart.

A syntactically valid file can still contain an unsupported value, so use the settings documented for your server build rather than importing an old configuration wholesale. Preserve the original malformed file in a separate backup so you can identify which edit introduced the problem.
Rule out a port conflict
Another process using one of the configured ports can cause an address-in-use or bind failure. Check the operating system’s listening-socket or process tools for UDP 8766, 27016, and 9700. Stop the competing service or assign a documented alternative port, then update the corresponding firewall and NAT rules. Do not change ports merely because the server is missing from the browser; first establish that a bind conflict exists.
After changing a port, restart the service and verify the new listening value in the console or panel. Update every dependent rule together: the server configuration, host firewall, router forward, and any provider-side allocation. Leaving one layer on the old value creates a new, harder-to-read failure.

Check the active data path
Panels and service wrappers can use a working directory or user-data directory different from the folder you opened manually. Confirm the service’s active dedicatedserver.cfg, save location, and startup working directory in the panel or service definition. If your edit has no effect, you may have changed a copied file rather than the file the running service reads.
Check the file’s modification time immediately before and after a restart and look for a configuration path in startup output. Also verify the active SonsOfTheForestDS data directory; multiple installations or migration copies can contain similarly named files. Stop the service before replacing a configuration so the process cannot overwrite your repair with an older in-memory copy.
Separate a bad save from a bad installation
If the process fails while loading a particular world, stop it and select another save slot temporarily. A fresh world that starts normally points to corruption or incompatibility in the original save rather than a general server failure. Keep the original files untouched until you have a backup and a recovery plan.
This controlled comparison is more informative than repeatedly restarting the same broken slot. If every slot fails, return to configuration, ports, and installation checks. If only one slot fails, keep network settings unchanged and focus recovery on that world’s backup.
When the server runs but is not visible in the browser
Disable LAN-only operation for an Internet server
Verify that the configuration is not set to LanOnly. A LAN-only server is intentionally excluded from public discovery, so changing firewall rules will not make it appear on the Internet. Confirm the intended mode after every configuration restore, since a backup made for local testing may retain LAN-only behavior.
Verify the query path on UDP 27016
Browser discovery uses the Steam query port, not the primary game-traffic port. Confirm that UDP 27016 is listening, allowed through the host firewall, and forwarded to the correct private IP. A server can accept local connections while remaining invisible externally when this one port is blocked.
Check the query rule independently from UDP 8766. Seeing a running process or a successful direct connection does not prove that browser queries can reach it. If the query port is correct but the listing remains absent, continue with address, provider-port, and external-network checks instead of repeatedly editing the server name or save settings.
Use the address and port actually exposed by the host
For a home connection, check the current public address and whether the Internet provider places you behind carrier-grade NAT. For a managed panel, use the public address and provider-assigned port displayed by that panel; do not substitute an internal address. Test from outside the server’s LAN and, if possible, ask a friend on another provider to search for it.
Carrier-grade NAT or another provider-level restriction can prevent inbound access even when local router rules are correct. In that case, document the public address and assigned port shown by the provider and ask whether inbound forwarding is supported. A managed host can remove the home-router requirement, but you still need to verify the panel’s address and port and confirm that the service is not configured for LAN-only operation.

When players can see the server but cannot join
Check UDP 8766 first
Once discovery works, UDP 8766 becomes the primary connection check. Confirm that the router forwards it to the same private address shown by the server machine, that the host firewall permits inbound UDP, and that the server is still listening after a restart. A stale DHCP address can silently send traffic to another device.

Ask whether the failure affects every remote player or only one client. If everyone fails, concentrate on the server’s port, firewall, NAT, and build. If one player fails while others join, compare that player’s game build and connection path before changing server-wide settings.
Investigate loading hangs with UDP 9700
If the server appears and the connection begins but hangs while loading, verify UDP 9700. This port is used for world and save synchronization. A rule that allows 8766 and 27016 but blocks 9700 can produce a convincing “server is online” result followed by a failed load.
Check UDP 9700 in both directions required by the host and router rules described by the provider, then retry with a known-good save slot. If a fresh world loads but the original does not, treat the result as save-specific and begin backup and restore work rather than repeatedly changing network ports.

Check for mismatched builds
If only some players fail, compare their game build with the dedicated-server build and remove stale client updates. If everyone fails after a patch, treat version mismatch as the leading cause rather than rebuilding the network rules.
Do the comparison after the server has been fully updated and restarted. A separately updated installation may not be the copy used by the service, so verify the installation path and update timestamp in the active panel or service definition.
When everyone is rejected after a game update
- Stop the dedicated-server service cleanly.
- Run the update workflow for the dedicated-server installation used by the service, not a separate copy.
- Wait for the update to finish and verify the installed build or update timestamp.
- Start the server again and read the startup output for errors.
- Have clients update the game before attempting to join.
Do not leave an old server process running while updating another installation; clients can continue reaching the old process and receive the same rejection. If rejection continues, confirm that the clients are connecting to the updated address and port rather than a second instance or an old provider allocation.
When configuration changes appear to do nothing
Trace the complete path from the service launcher to the file it reads:
- Confirm the panel or service definition’s working directory.
- Confirm the user-data directory and the active
SonsOfTheForestDSdata folder. - Check the modification time of the file immediately before and after a restart.
- Read the startup log for the configuration path, if it reports one.
- Change one setting only, restart, and verify the resulting behavior.
Editing a template, backup, or unused installation can be perfectly correct and still have no effect on the live service. Keep a note of which instance, save slot, and provider allocation you tested so a second panel or migrated directory is not mistaken for the active one.
Recovering a failed save or missing progress
Back up before repair
Before an update, migration, configuration experiment, or recovery attempt, stop the service and copy the complete SonsOfTheForestDS data directory to separate storage. Preserve the directory structure and keep more than one dated backup when possible. A partial copy may omit the files needed to restore a world.
Do not overwrite the only backup with a repair attempt. Keep the failed directory, the pre-failure backup, and any newly created test-world data in clearly named locations. This lets you return to the original state if a restore is incomplete.

Use a controlled slot test
- Stop the server and preserve the current data directory.
- Start with a different existing save slot, or create a temporary fresh world.
- Attempt one join and observe whether the server reaches a stable running state.
- If the alternate world works, stop the server and focus recovery on the original slot rather than changing network settings.
Record which slot was tested and whether the failure occurred before or during world loading. A successful alternate slot is evidence that the server process, ports, and clients can work together; it does not repair the damaged slot by itself.

Restore only after stopping the service
Choose a backup known to predate the failure, stop the service, and restore the required save files or the complete data directory according to the panel’s procedure. Keep the failed copy separate so you can return to it if the first restore is incomplete.
After restoration, start the service once and read the console before inviting players back. Confirm that the expected save slot loads and that progress is present. Do not delete the failed copy until the restored world has remained stable through a normal stop and start.
Treat destructive commands as recovery operations
The documented server settings include initType, save slots, autosave interval, and log visibility. The /restart command can reset save data, so do not use it as a routine diagnostic shortcut. Confirm what it will reset in your build, take a backup, and use it only when you deliberately intend that recovery action.
A restart command and a clean service restart are not interchangeable recovery steps. Use the least destructive test first: inspect logs, validate JSON, test another slot, and confirm the active path. Only then consider an action that can reset world data.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both models can run a reliable server, but they place different tasks on the operator.

Managed hosting is most useful when router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT, firewall maintenance, or backup administration is the obstacle. It does not remove the need to diagnose build compatibility, active paths, or corrupted saves. Before choosing a provider, confirm that its panel exposes console and log output, identifies the public address and assigned ports, offers a documented update workflow, and explains snapshot retention and restoration.

This sequence limits unnecessary changes and preserves the evidence needed to find the real cause.

Which ports must I forward for a home-hosted dedicated server?
Forward UDP 8766 for game traffic, UDP 27016 for Steam browser queries, and UDP 9700 for world and save synchronization. Allow all three inbound through the host firewall and router NAT.
