For the default Sons of the Forest dedicated server, allow the three game-specific ports as inbound UDP traffic: GamePort, QueryPort and BlobSyncPort. Permit them in the server computer’s firewall, then forward the same UDP ports from your router to the server’s stable private IP address. A server hosted by a provider needs those ports configured in the provider’s firewall or control panel instead; your home router is not involved.
The default port set
The dedicated-server configuration uses these default values. All three are UDP; creating TCP-only rules will not provide the required inbound path.

These are defaults, not immutable assignments. The dedicated-server configuration guide notes that the values can be changed in the configuration file. If you change one, the new value must be used consistently in the operating-system firewall, router or provider mapping, and any connection instructions you give players.
What each port affects
GamePort: the player connection path
GamePort carries the server’s core game traffic. Treat it as essential for player connectivity. If the server process is running but this path is blocked, players generally cannot establish a playable session even if the server appears locally healthy.

QueryPort: discovery and listing
QueryPort handles server-query traffic used for discovery and listing. A blocked query port can make a server absent from browser listings while the dedicated-server process continues running. That symptom does not, by itself, prove that the game port is wrong; test the query rule separately from the connection path.
BlobSyncPort: synchronization traffic
BlobSyncPort is part of the dedicated server’s blob and world-state synchronization. Keep it open with the other two values. The available guidance identifies the required ports but does not publish a complete version-specific map in which every individual blocked port produces one unique symptom, so use the full three-port check rather than diagnosing from a single symptom.
Before you create any rules
- Know whether the server is running on a computer in your home network or on a remote managed host.
- Identify the server computer’s current private IPv4 address, such as the address shown by your operating system’s network settings.
- Create a DHCP reservation, static lease, or equivalent so the router continues assigning that same private address. A forwarding rule aimed at an old address silently sends traffic to the wrong device.
- Open
dedicatedserver.cfgand confirm the three configured values. Do not assume the defaults if someone has edited the file. - Stop or restart the dedicated server after configuration changes according to the server’s normal configuration workflow, then verify the running process is using the intended values.
Configure the server computer’s firewall
The host firewall is the first gate. A router rule can deliver a datagram to the computer, but the operating-system firewall can still discard it before the dedicated server receives it.

Windows host
- Open Windows Security, choose Firewall & network protection, then open Advanced settings.
- Select Inbound Rules and choose New Rule.
- Choose Port, select UDP, and enter the configured GamePort, QueryPort, and BlobSyncPort values. You can create one rule covering the values if your firewall interface supports a comma-separated list, or create separate rules for clearer auditing.
- Choose Allow the connection, apply only to the network profiles you actually use, and give the rule a name that identifies the dedicated server and UDP ports.
- Save the rule and confirm it is enabled. If you prefer application-scoped rules, allow the dedicated-server executable while still ensuring the three UDP ports are covered.
On Linux or another operating system, use that system’s firewall manager to allow inbound UDP on the configured values for the dedicated-server process. The exact command differs by distribution and firewall framework; the requirement is the same: inbound UDP must reach the process on all three configured ports.
Forward the ports on a home router
Port forwarding translates traffic arriving at your public address to the private address of the server computer. Router menus vary, but the sequence is consistent.
- Sign in to the router’s administration interface and open its Port Forwarding, NAT, or similarly named section.
- Create a rule for each configured port, or one multi-port rule if the router supports it. Set the protocol to UDP; do not select TCP-only.
- Enter the same value for the external and internal port unless you intentionally changed the public mapping. Set the destination to the server computer’s reserved private IP address.
- Save or apply the rules. Some routers require a service restart before the mapping becomes active.
- Check that no broader rule, parental-control policy, guest-network isolation setting, or second NAT device overrides the mapping.
Forward only the ports required by the dedicated server. Do not expose the router’s administration interface, remote-desktop service, or unrelated applications as part of this setup.

When the server is hosted elsewhere
A managed provider places the server outside your home LAN. In that arrangement, configure the three UDP ports in the provider’s firewall, allocation panel, or game-server control panel. Do not add a home-router forward for a remote machine: your router cannot forward traffic to a server that is not behind it.
Providers may assign a public port that differs from the internal port, or may require you to reserve ports before starting the instance. Follow the allocation shown by that provider and make the values in the server configuration match. If the provider supplies an external address and port, give players that information rather than your home public address.
UDP versus TCP: what to select
The dedicated-server guide labels GamePort, QueryPort, and BlobSyncPort as UDP. Use UDP rules for all three. Steam’s general support material also lists broader client and dedicated/listen-server ranges for Steam operation, but those ranges are not a replacement for the game-specific inbound forwarding set above. Opening unrelated Steam ranges can increase exposure without fixing a missing game rule.

If your router offers choices such as TCP, UDP, or TCP/UDP, choose UDP when creating these game-specific mappings. A TCP/UDP rule may work on some devices, but it is broader than necessary; a TCP-only rule is the common configuration error.
Verify the setup from outside your network
A successful connection from another computer on the same LAN does not prove that public NAT is correct. Routers differ in their support for hairpin or NAT-loopback connections, and a local test can bypass the public path entirely.
- Start the dedicated server and confirm its configuration file contains the intended values.
- Run the server’s built-in network self-test, if available, and read the resulting log output rather than relying only on a green status message.
- Confirm that the host firewall rules are enabled for inbound UDP and that the router or provider mapping points to the correct destination address.
- From a genuinely external network, such as a phone using cellular data or a separate location, check whether the server can be discovered and joined. Do not test only from the same Wi-Fi network.
- After every port or address change, repeat the external test. A test performed before a rule was applied says nothing about the corrected configuration.
Generic web port-checking sites often test TCP and therefore cannot reliably validate a UDP game port. Prefer the server’s self-test, an actual external join attempt, and the server logs.

Troubleshoot by symptom and layer
The server is not visible in the browser
- Check QueryPort first, including the protocol. A blocked query path can hide a running server from listings.
- Verify that the configured query value is the one forwarded; do not assume the default if
dedicatedserver.cfgwas edited. - Confirm the host firewall permits inbound UDP and that the router rule targets the server’s current reserved address.
- Test from outside the LAN. A local browser result can be affected by NAT-loopback behavior.
Players cannot join directly
- Check GamePort and BlobSyncPort as well as QueryPort; opening only the listing port does not create a complete connection path.
- Look for a TCP-only rule, a typo in the port number, or a router rule aimed at another device.
- Read the dedicated-server log and run the network self-test.
The rules look correct, but the server remains unreachable
- Check whether another process is already using one of the selected ports. Resolve the conflict or choose different values and update every layer together.
- Look for two routers performing NAT. If the internet connection enters one router and a second router sits behind it, the mapping may need to exist on both devices, or the inner router must be placed in an appropriate bridge or access-point arrangement.
- Ask whether the internet service uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). With CGNAT, your router may not have a directly reachable public address, so conventional inbound forwarding can be impossible.
- Check for provider-level firewall restrictions or a managed-host allocation that has not been attached to the instance.
Home hosting is impossible because of CGNAT or provider restrictions
If you cannot obtain a usable public inbound path, use a managed host or a supported tunneling solution that supplies its own port-mapping process. Follow that service’s instructions; do not keep changing local router rules that cannot overcome upstream NAT.

The port numbers alone do not determine which approach is better. Compare the operational trade-offs before exposing a home connection.

Security and reliability practices
- Use a reserved private address so a lease renewal does not redirect traffic to another device.
- Permit only the required inbound UDP ports and keep router firmware and the server operating system maintained.
- Do not publish your router-admin credentials or expose management interfaces through the same forwarding screen.
- Record the configured values in
dedicatedserver.cfg, the host firewall, and the router or provider panel so future changes remain synchronized. - Back up the world data and configuration before changing ports, updating the server, or moving hosts.
- Remember that the configuration guide’s default
MaxPlayersvalue of 8 is a server setting, not a measured player-capacity statistic or a guarantee of network performance.
Quick checklist

dedicatedserver.cfg. - Inbound UDP is allowed on the server computer.
- Home-router forwarding, if applicable, targets the server’s reserved private IP.
- A remote host has the ports allocated in its own firewall or control panel instead of your home router.
