If your Sons of the Forest dedicated server process is running but the server is missing from the browser, start with the server’s active configuration and startup self-test. Confirm the bind address and all three default UDP ports, forward those same ports to a stable LAN address, allow them through the host firewall, and then test from outside your home network. A server can be healthy while still being invisible to a client behind the same router, so browser discovery on the host’s own LAN is not a reliable first test.
What “running” and “visible” actually mean
A dedicated-server process staying open only proves that the program launched. Visibility requires several separate network paths to work:

- The game traffic, query traffic and blob-synchronization traffic must use the expected UDP ports.
- Your router or hosting panel must send those ports to the machine that is running the server.
- The operating-system or provider firewall must permit the executable and its ports.
- The client must be testing from a network where discovery is possible.
When one of these checks fails, symptoms can look contradictory. The console may continue running, a local client may connect by an internal IP, or a remote player may connect directly while the public browser remains empty. Treat “not listed” as a network-path problem first, not proof that the server executable failed.
Check the three default UDP ports before changing anything else
The Steam Community Dedicated Server Configuration Guide (2023) identifies three default UDP ports for this server:

Do not assume that forwarding only the game port is sufficient. A closed or mismatched query or blob-synchronization port can leave the server absent from the browser even though the process is running. Every place that defines a port must use the same value: the active dedicatedserver.cfg, the router’s port-forward entries (or your provider’s equivalent), and the host firewall.
Steam’s general required-port documentation also lists remote UDP ports 27015–27050 and TCP ports 27015–27050. That is a Steam connectivity reference, not a replacement for the dedicated server’s three configured UDP values. If your hosting provider or a Steam-related service requires additional rules, follow that service’s documentation without changing the game server’s own settings accidentally.

Use the active configuration and read the startup self-test
The dedicated server performs a network self-test while booting. The guide describes this test as a check that the server is properly configured; a failed check prevents normal startup and the console or log identifies the failing condition. This output is more useful than repeatedly refreshing the server browser.
- Stop the server cleanly. Close it through the server console or the normal stop procedure rather than killing the process. This prevents a stale process from keeping files or ports in use.
- Open the configuration the running installation actually reads. Edit the active
dedicatedserver.cfg, not a copied sample, backup or file in another installation directory. If you have multiple server folders, confirm the path shown by your launch script or service definition. - Record the current bind address and port values. Save a backup before editing so you can restore a known working value.
- Start the server and watch the first self-test messages. Fix the first inaccessible port, bind error or address mismatch reported. Later errors can be consequences of the first failure.
A self-test failure is a stop sign: forwarding ports or changing browser filters will not make the server discoverable until the server can bind and complete its own checks.

Verify the bind address without guessing
The bind address tells the server which local network interface should accept traffic. It must correspond to the host that receives your forwarding rules. A common mistake is entering a public address, an old LAN address or an address belonging to a different adapter.
- On the host, identify the current private IPv4 address shown by the operating system’s network settings.
- Compare it with the address used by each router-forwarding rule.
- Check whether Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a VPN or a virtual adapter changed the active interface since the server was configured.
- Leave the bind value at the documented working address unless the self-test or logs show a bind problem.
Community reports describe cases in which correcting the configured address together with its port restored visibility, and other cases in which binding to 0.0.0.0 helped. Those are configuration-specific remedies, not universal defaults. Try them only after checking the documented ports and logs, and keep the original value so you can undo the experiment. Binding to 0.0.0.0 means listening on all local interfaces; it does not by itself create router forwarding or bypass a firewall.
Give the host a stable LAN address and forward all three ports
Port forwarding points to an internal address. If the router gives the host a different address after a reboot, the rules can silently point at another device. Steam’s router guidance recommends using a static internal IP for reliable forwarding.
Reserve or assign the address
- Open your router’s LAN or DHCP settings.
- Create a DHCP reservation for the server machine’s network adapter, or assign a static private address using your network’s documented method.
- Confirm that the host still has that address after reconnecting or restarting.
Create matching forwarding rules
- Open the router’s Port Forwarding, NAT or similarly named page.
- Choose UDP as the protocol for each dedicated-server rule.
- Enter each of the three values from the port table as the external and internal port, unless your provider explicitly documents a different mapping.
- Set the destination to the host’s reserved LAN address, not the router address and not an old address.
- Save the rules and restart the router only if it requires a reboot to apply them.
Managed hosting panels use the same logic: add the UDP rules to the server instance’s network or security-group controls and target the instance running the dedicated server. A rule on the wrong virtual machine has the same symptom as a missing rule at home.

Allow the executable and ports through the host firewall
Forwarding changes the router; it does not automatically permit traffic on the computer. On Windows, open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection and verify that the dedicated-server executable, commonly shown as SonsOfTheForestDS.exe, is allowed on the active network profile. For a precise rule, open Advanced settings → Inbound Rules → New Rule, choose a port rule for UDP, enter the three configured ports, and allow the connection for the profiles you actually use.
If the server is hosted by a provider, check both layers: the provider’s network firewall or security group and the operating system inside the instance. A provider rule can allow traffic to the machine while the guest operating system still blocks it, or the reverse.

After changing a firewall rule, restart the server and inspect the startup output again. Avoid disabling the entire firewall as a permanent fix. A short, controlled test can isolate the cause, but restore protection and create a narrow executable or UDP rule once the test is complete.
Test discovery from the right network
Steam documents a specific same-router limitation: when the client and server are behind the same router, the client may not be able to connect through the server browser. Therefore, a missing listing on the host’s home network does not prove that internet players cannot reach the server.

For a same-LAN test
- Open Steam’s server favorites or direct-connect interface rather than relying on the public browser.
- Enter the server host’s internal IP address and the configured game port in the format accepted by your Steam client.
- Test from another device on the same LAN.
This verifies local routing, the bind address and the host firewall, but it does not validate internet forwarding.
For an internet test
Use a client on a different connection, such as a phone hotspot or a friend’s network. Do not test from another device that still uses the same home router. If the server works externally but not through the local browser, the same-router discovery limitation is the likely explanation.
Isolate router, NAT and filtering problems
When the self-test passes, the configuration matches the forwarding rules, and the firewall is allowed, isolate the network equipment one layer at a time. Steam’s support guidance recommends rebooting the modem and router, checking filtering features, and temporarily connecting the host directly to the modem. A wired Ethernet connection is useful because it removes Wi-Fi association and roaming variables from the test.
- Reboot the modem and router. Wait for the internet connection to return, then start the dedicated server and repeat the external test.
- Inspect stateful inspection and dynamic packet filtering. Security features can reject unsolicited inbound UDP even when a forwarding entry exists.
- Review QoS and UPnP. Temporarily disable conflicting rules or automatic mappings only for testing, then restore the security settings you need.
- Look for double NAT. If an internet modem also performs routing and a second router sits behind it, the outer device must pass the traffic to the inner router, or the inner router must be placed in the documented bridge or access-point arrangement.
- Check for CGNAT. If your provider does not give your router a publicly reachable address, ordinary inbound forwarding may not work. Ask the provider whether inbound connections are restricted and what public-address options are available.
- Run the direct-modem test. Connect the host directly to the modem with Ethernet only when you understand the security implications and can restore the normal setup immediately. Steam notes that if Steam connectivity works after bypassing the router, the router’s configuration or compatibility is implicated.
Record what changed in each test. If direct modem access works and the normal router path does not, focus on NAT, filtering or forwarding rather than reinstalling the server.

What to do after a game or server update
Community reports describe servers disappearing after updates. An update can leave an old configuration in place, change which file is active, or expose an address-and-port mismatch that previously went unnoticed. Treat an update-related disappearance as a configuration regression until the logs show otherwise.
- Confirm that the launch command still points to the intended server directory.
- Reopen the active
dedicatedserver.cfgand compare its bind address and three UDP values with the router and firewall rules. - Read the complete startup self-test after the update rather than relying on an old successful console window.
- Only after those checks, test the reported address correction or
0.0.0.0binding remedy, one change at a time.
If one change restores visibility, write down the previous and new values. That makes a later update easier to troubleshoot and prevents an unverified workaround from becoming permanent by accident.
Symptom-based diagnosis

Home hosting versus managed hosting
Both approaches can work; the practical difference is who controls the network boundary and who performs maintenance.

Managed hosting is worth considering when your home connection is behind CGNAT, you cannot configure forwarding, or you need a host that remains online while your personal computer is off. Before moving, verify that the provider permits all three UDP ports, exposes startup logs, and lets you edit the active configuration rather than only a read-only template.
A repeatable recovery checklist
- Stop the server cleanly and back up the current configuration.
- Edit the active
dedicatedserver.cfg, not an example copy. - Confirm the bind address belongs to the host that will receive traffic.
- Confirm the three default UDP values in the configuration and use those same values in forwarding and firewall rules.
- Reserve a stable LAN address for the host.
- Allow
SonsOfTheForestDS.exeand the configured UDP ports through the operating-system firewall. - Start the server and fix the first self-test error shown in the console or logs.
- For local testing, use Steam favorites with the internal IP instead of trusting browser discovery.
- For real availability, test from a separate internet connection.
- If it still fails, reboot the modem and router, then investigate filtering, QoS, UPnP, double NAT and CGNAT.
- Test address-specific community remedies only after the documented checks, changing one setting at a time and keeping a rollback copy.
The fastest path is evidence-driven: the self-test identifies what the server cannot reach, the port table prevents inconsistent values, and an external test separates a genuine internet-access problem from the known same-router browser limitation.
