Kelvin is a support survivor, not a combat companion. Because the helicopter crash left him deaf and mute, you control him with written notepad orders. His strongest uses are gathering materials, moving resources to holders, completing simple construction, clearing space, maintaining a base and warning you about nearby enemies. He retreats instead of fighting, so plan your defenses and combat around that limitation.
How Kelvin works
After the crash, Kelvin can follow you and accept written instructions through his notepad. Walk up to him and interact to open the order list, then select the task and any destination or location option shown for that task. He does not respond to spoken commands, and he cannot interpret a general instruction such as “help me” without a specific order.
Orders are assignments rather than permanent abilities. You can give him a new command whenever you need a different job, tell him to pause, or relocate him. His usefulness depends on the terrain, available resources, nearby enemies and the features supported by your current game patch.
Kelvin’s command list

Using Get to gather and deliver resources
Get is Kelvin’s most flexible order. Select the resource first, then select what should happen to it after collection. The exact holder options can vary with the item and the patch, so read the destination choices shown in the notepad rather than assuming every resource supports every destination.

Logs
Choose logs when you are expanding a base or preparing a large blueprint. Kelvin can collect logs and, in supported builds, fill a log sled. He can also drop logs nearby or bring them along his route when that option is available. Log work is most effective when trees and the intended building site are close; otherwise he can spend a long time walking between the source and the base.
Sticks, rocks and stones
These small construction materials are useful for traps, fires, shelters and defensive projects. Kelvin can gather sticks, rocks and stones and either leave them near a chosen area or fill a compatible holder. Stone pickup and holder behavior have changed through patches, so a command that worked differently in an older save may have a different result after an update.
Fish and berries
Kelvin can collect fish and berries for food. Use a nearby source and select a handoff or drop-off that keeps the food accessible at camp. He manages his own basic eating and drinking, but that does not turn him into an automatic food-storage system: you still need to provide suitable gathering instructions and organize the result.

Arrows and radios are listed among his carry targets. These are useful when you want him to move scattered items toward camp or a player rather than spend time carrying building materials. If the item is not offered in the current command menu, the current build may not support that target in the present context.

- Fill a compatible holder.
- Drop the item nearby.
- Give it directly to you.
- Continue following you while carrying it.
When a holder does not fill, check that it is the correct holder for that item, that the resource is available, and that Kelvin is not blocked by terrain, combat or another assignment.
Building, clearing and maintaining a base
Build orders
Use Build for a fire, shelter, a structure that is already placed as a blueprint, or a clear-shelter action. Kelvin is most reliable when the blueprint is accessible and the required materials are close enough for him to reach. He helps with straightforward construction; he does not replace the player for every specialized or complex building action.

For a new project, place the blueprint yourself, bring the required materials into the area, then assign Kelvin to finish it. If he stops, inspect the blueprint for missing resources, blocked access or an enemy encounter before issuing the command again.
Maintain base
Maintain base is the right command for routine upkeep rather than one isolated construction step. Depending on the version, Kelvin can repair structures, complete available blueprints, fill some holders and sharpen defensive walls. This makes him valuable at a long-term camp, especially when you leave to hunt or explore.
Maintenance is not unlimited automation. He cannot perform every interaction in the game, and support for particular holders, traps or defensive pieces has been added and corrected over time. Keep critical repairs and high-risk defenses under your own control if an attack is imminent.

Clear
Clear removes vegetation and small obstructions around Kelvin. Select a radius of 5, 10 or 20 metres. A 5-metre radius is useful for a compact shelter or fire; 10 metres suits a normal work area; 20 metres is better for a broad building footprint but can take longer and may remove more of the natural cover you wanted to keep.
Keeping Kelvin in the right place
Follow Me
Use Follow Me before relocating your camp, gathering him for an expedition or moving him away from a dangerous edge. It is also a practical way to reset his position after a long gathering route.
Stay
Stay offers three useful choices: remain where he is, stay at a shelter, or stay hidden. A shelter location is convenient for a permanent base; hidden is better when you want him out of sight while you scout or fight elsewhere. Staying does not make him invulnerable, so avoid treating a fixed position as a guarantee of safety.
Take a break
Choose Take a break to pause an assignment. This is useful when you want to stop him gathering before the area is depleted, prevent him from wandering during an attack, or temporarily free him from maintenance while you reorganize the base.
What Kelvin can and cannot do

Can Kelvin fight?
No. Kelvin is not a combat companion. He can indicate the direction of nearby enemies, but when fighting starts he retreats rather than engaging as a frontline survivor. Keep him away from a planned battle with Stay or Take a break, and do not build a strategy that depends on him holding a defensive line.

His noncombat value is substantial: he can keep materials moving while you explore, finish routine work while you hunt and help restore a base after damage. Think of him as a worker and warning system whose safety is your responsibility.
Kelvin’s carry targets and clothing

To change his outfit, choose Take Item / Take clothing and give him the clothing item. Clothing is cosmetic, so select it for role-play or visual preference rather than protection, speed, carrying capacity or combat strength.

Debug access provides optional commands for testing, custom saves and recovery. These commands are not a substitute for the normal notepad system and are sensitive to game version, platform setup and command context. Enable and use debug features only in a save where you accept the possibility of unexpected behavior.
addcharacter robby
This command adds another Kelvin character. Multiple survivors can create unusual pathing, ownership and save-state behavior, so use it deliberately rather than as a routine way to replace the original companion.
robbycarry
robbycarry is used for selected carried items. The available item behavior can be limited, and the result may differ by version or by whether Kelvin is already assigned another task. If you issue it repeatedly, carried items can accumulate rather than replacing what he already has.

additem and spawnitem
These commands add items to inventory or spawn them in the world, depending on the syntax and context supported by the current debug implementation. Confirm the item name and command form for your build. A command that is accepted but produces no visible result may have targeted inventory instead of the ground, or may no longer support that item after a patch.
Safe debug workflow
- Back up the save before enabling or using debug commands.
- Test one command at a time in a disposable or duplicate save.
- Check Kelvin’s position and carried items after each command.
- Do not repeatedly run carry or spawn commands until you confirm whether the previous command succeeded.
- If behavior becomes inconsistent, reload the backup and return to normal notepad orders.
Patch sensitivity and version notes
Kelvin’s behavior has changed across updates. The maintained wiki home lists Patch 16 – Hotfix 3 as released on October 3, 2025. The Kelvin reference also records earlier additions and fixes involving stone pickup, log-sled filling, traps, drying racks, trees, arrows and holders.
Those changes matter when a command appears to work differently from an older guide. Before troubleshooting a failed task, confirm that your game is updated and that the command is supported in the current build. A saved world can also retain an assignment or object state created under an earlier version, so reissuing the order after loading may be necessary.

Starting a new base
- Use Follow Me to bring Kelvin to the selected site.
- Use Clear with a 5-, 10- or 20-metre radius according to the footprint you need.
- Place your shelter, fire or other blueprint.
- Use Get for nearby sticks, rocks, stones or logs and select the available holder or drop-off.
- Assign Build to finish the supported structure.
- Switch to Maintain base once the camp is operating.
Stocking a permanent camp
Keep Kelvin near the camp with Stay or Follow Me, then rotate Get orders by need: logs for major construction, small materials for repairs, and fish or berries for food. Use holders where the menu offers them; otherwise select a nearby drop or handoff. Pause him before a dangerous expedition so he does not wander into the encounter.
Preparing for an attack
- Use Take a break to stop gathering or building.
- Use Stay hidden or move him to a shelter.
- Check defensive walls and other structures yourself.
- Fight the attackers without expecting Kelvin to assist.
- After the area is safe, use Maintain base to repair supported damage and resume resource work.
Troubleshooting Kelvin’s orders
He does nothing
- Open the notepad again and confirm that the order was actually selected.
- Check whether he is paused with Take a break or fixed by a previous Stay instruction.
- Look for an unreachable resource, blocked blueprint or missing holder.
- Move him closer with Follow Me, then issue the command again.
He stops carrying items
- Verify that the selected destination supports that resource.
- Check whether the holder is full, damaged or outside his route.
- Look for an enemy encounter that caused him to retreat.
- Confirm that the item is still a supported carry target in your patch.
He will not fill a sled, rack or holder
Holder interactions have received fixes and additions over time. Confirm the current build, make sure the object is placed correctly and try a fresh Get order. If the menu does not offer the holder, use a nearby drop or direct handoff instead of repeatedly issuing the same command.
He disappears or is in the wrong place
Use Follow Me to reset his location and then assign Stay at a shelter or safe work area. If a debug command created a duplicate or moved him unexpectedly, reload the backup save rather than stacking more commands.

Best way to use Kelvin
Give Kelvin short, local assignments that match his strengths: gather a material near camp, finish an accessible blueprint, clear a defined work area or maintain completed structures. Keep him out of combat, verify destination options before committing him to a long route, and treat every console command as experimental and patch-sensitive. Used this way, he turns routine survival work into background progress without pretending to be a fighter.
