In Sons of the Forest, tap your inventory binding to open the complete inventory. Hold that same binding to open the backpack’s Quick Select view. The backpack is acquired shortly after the helicopter crash and gives fast access to selected carried equipment without removing those items from your normal inventory.
Set up the backpack from the full inventory, then use it for the few weapons, tools, light sources, healing items, and food or stamina items you reach for most often. Keyboard players can also assign number-key hotkeys, while controller players should follow the button prompts shown by their active Controls screen because labels and defaults vary by platform and remapping.
The inventory controls in one glance
| Action | How to start it | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Full Inventory | Tap the key or button assigned to inventory | View carried items, manage equipment, craft, and configure the backpack |
| Backpack Quick Select | Hold the inventory binding | Choose a small set of assigned items while exploring |
| Keyboard hotkey | Press a configured number key after assigning it to a hovered item | Equip a frequently used item without opening the full inventory |
| Controller selection | Hold the inventory button, then use the on-screen selection prompt | Choose an assigned item with the buttons or stick shown for your layout |
The tap-versus-hold distinction is the most important thing to remember. A quick tap and a deliberate hold perform different actions, even though they use the same binding. If your game opens the wrong screen, check whether you released the control too quickly or held it long enough to trigger Quick Select.
What the backpack actually does
The backpack is not a second, unlimited storage container. Its documented purpose is to provide quick access to selected items through the Quick Select system. You choose eligible equipment from the full inventory and expose it through the backpack. The selected item remains in your ordinary inventory; assigning it does not create a duplicate or move it into a separate permanent stash.

You receive the backpack near the beginning of the game, after the helicopter crash. Once it is available, the full inventory becomes the place where you decide which carried items deserve fast access. The backpack is most useful when you are moving, fighting, or navigating in darkness and do not want to stop to search through every item you own.
There is no authoritative capacity figure for the backpack in the available controls material, so do not plan around an assumed number of slots. Treat Quick Select as a limited, curated list and follow the inventory interface’s prompts about which carried items can be assigned. The game may expose only eligible equipment in a particular context; an item that cannot be assigned is not evidence that the system is broken.
Tap the inventory key for the full inventory
- Find the active binding. Open the game’s Controls screen and note the key or button currently labeled for inventory. Defaults can be changed, so use the label in your own installation rather than relying on a keyboard diagram from another player.
- Tap, do not hold. Press and release the binding to open the complete inventory interface. Holding it is reserved for the backpack Quick Select view.
- Locate the backpack or Quick Select control. The inventory interface displays the control used to configure or access the backpack. Read the prompt at the bottom or beside the relevant panel; its exact wording can change with input method and remapping.
- Hover over an item. Move the cursor or selector to a weapon, tool, consumable, or other carried item you want available quickly. The interface should show the available assignment prompt when that item is eligible.
- Assign the item. Use the displayed command to place it in a backpack position or attach a number-key hotkey. The item stays in your regular inventory after assignment.
After configuring the backpack, close the inventory normally. You do not need to transfer the selected equipment to a different container before using Quick Select.
Hold the same binding to use Quick Select
- Close menus and return to play. Quick Select is intended for use while exploring, so begin from the normal game view.
- Hold the inventory binding. Keep the key or button depressed long enough for the backpack view to appear. A tap will reopen the full inventory instead.
- Choose the item. Use the selector, stick, mouse, or button prompts displayed by your current input method. Select the weapon, tool, light, treatment, or consumable you need.
- Release or confirm as prompted. The game’s prompt determines whether releasing the hold, clicking, or pressing a confirm button equips the highlighted item. Do not assume a keyboard action applies to every controller layout.
- Return to movement. Once the item is selected, resume play and use it normally. If the wrong item appears, reopen the full inventory later and refresh the assignment.
Practice the hold gesture in a safe area before entering a cave. The difference between a tap and a hold is easy to miss when you are under attack, and learning the timing away from danger prevents an avoidable pause in the wrong menu.
Configure keyboard hotkeys
Keyboard and mouse players have two related ways to reach equipment quickly: the backpack interaction and direct number-key hotkeys. A controls reference lists Item Slot 1 through Item Slot 4 as number-key quick-slot actions, while an Endnight Games Steam hotfix documented a hotkey system that lets players assign number keys 0 through 9 to hovered inventory items. These references describe defaults and available functions, not an unchangeable layout.

Assign a number key from the inventory
- Tap the inventory binding to open the full inventory.
- Move the pointer over the item you want to bind.
- Press the number key you want to use. The documented hotkey system accepts numerical keys 0 through 9 for hovered inventory items.
- Watch for the assignment indicator or slot change, then repeat for other frequently used items.
- Close the inventory and press the chosen number key during play to test the result.
If your installation uses only four visible item slots by default, that does not necessarily contradict the 0–9 assignment feature. The controls reference describes common Item Slot 1–4 actions, while the hotfix describes assigning keys across the number row. Your current Controls screen and the prompts in the inventory determine which behavior is enabled in your version and layout.

Open Options and then Controls from the game’s menu. Look for the inventory action, item-slot actions, and any command associated with assigning or selecting backpack items. If a number key does nothing, another action may already use it, the item may not be eligible, or the assignment may not have been saved. Remap the conflicting action, return to the inventory, and assign the key again.
Using a controller
The tap-versus-hold concept remains the same on a controller: tap the inventory button for the complete inventory and hold it for the backpack Quick Select view. The physical button and the confirmation command are not universal. Platform, controller type, accessibility remapping, and game settings can all change the prompts.
- Open Options > Controls and identify the button labeled for inventory.
- Tap it once to verify that the full inventory opens.
- Return to play, hold that same button, and wait for the backpack overlay.
- Use the stick or directional control shown by the overlay to highlight an assigned item.
- Press the confirm, release, or selection button displayed on screen.
Do not rely on a keyboard guide that substitutes number keys for controller actions. Controller Quick Select is an interaction with the backpack view, not necessarily a one-button equivalent of every keyboard hotkey. If you cannot select an item, pause and read the active prompt rather than guessing from a different platform’s layout.
A practical beginner Quick Select loadout
The game does not mandate one correct backpack configuration. The best list is the one that covers the problems you are most likely to face while leaving less frequently used objects in the full inventory. A balanced beginner setup is:

| Quick-access role | What to assign | Why it earns a slot | When to replace it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary weapon | A weapon you can use confidently | Combat can begin without stopping to search the inventory | Replace it when your normal fighting tool changes |
| Light source | Your regularly carried light or illumination tool | Dark areas require immediate access and make menu navigation harder | Change it when you adopt a different light source |
| Healing | A carried healing consumable | Damage can make opening and searching the full inventory risky | Refresh it when your available treatment changes |
| Food or stamina | A frequently used food or stamina consumable | Restores the resource you spend while traveling, climbing, or fighting | Swap it when your expedition’s needs change |
This arrangement is editorial guidance based on Quick Select’s purpose, not a fixed in-game rule. You can substitute a tool, defensive item, or another carried object when a particular trip demands it. For example, a cave expedition may justify a different tool than a short trip around camp.
Quick Select versus the full inventory
| Question | Quick Select | Full inventory |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Immediate access to selected, frequently used equipment | Broader storage, inspection, equipment management, and crafting |
| How you open it | Hold the inventory binding | Tap the inventory binding |
| Best use | Combat, darkness, healing, and movement when seconds matter | Preparation, sorting, crafting, and changing a complete loadout |
| What happens to assigned items | Displays items that remain in normal inventory | Shows the underlying carried items and assignment controls |
Use the full inventory for decisions and Quick Select for execution. Searching the entire inventory every time you need a light or treatment defeats the backpack’s purpose, while assigning every situational object makes the quick view harder to scan.

After a major gear change
Whenever you replace your main weapon, adopt a new light source, or begin carrying a different treatment, revisit the backpack. Old assignments can continue pointing to equipment you no longer use often. Reassign the high-frequency items before setting out rather than discovering the mismatch in a fight.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore a long cave trip
Pause in a safe location and configure the list before entering a cave or other hazardous area. Put the equipment needed for that trip together, test the hold gesture, and make sure the item is actually present in your carried inventory. Keeping rare or highly situational objects in the full inventory preserves Quick Select for actions you expect to perform repeatedly.
After changing controls
Remapping can invalidate muscle memory. After changing the inventory binding, number keys, or controller buttons, test both actions: tap for the full inventory and hold for Quick Select. Recheck any keyboard assignments because a key moved to another command may no longer behave as before.

Troubleshooting common inventory problems
A tap opens Quick Select, or a hold opens the full inventory
Release the control completely, then test again with a short tap and a sustained hold. If the behavior remains reversed, open Options > Controls and verify the active inventory binding. Another action, an accessibility remap, or an unfamiliar controller profile may be changing the input you expect.
An item is not available for assignment
Confirm that the item is currently carried and that the inventory interface displays an assignment prompt for it. The documented system exposes eligible carried equipment; it does not promise that every item type can be placed in Quick Select. Keep an ineligible or rarely used object in the full inventory and choose another item for the quick list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Check the Controls screen for the current Item Slot or hotkey binding.
- Confirm that you assigned the key while the pointer was hovering over the intended item.
- Check for a conflicting command using the same number key.
- Return to the inventory and assign the key again after remapping.
- Test with an item that the interface identifies as eligible for quick access.
The controller prompt does not match a guide
Use the prompt rendered by your game, not a button label from a different platform or controller. The tap/hold behavior is the transferable concept; the exact button, stick direction, and confirmation command are configurable details.
The wrong equipment appears
Open the full inventory and inspect the backpack assignments. Replace obsolete entries after changing gear, then close the menu and hold the inventory binding to verify the updated list. Because assignments expose items that remain in normal inventory, moving, consuming, or replacing an item can make an old setup no longer useful for the task at hand.
A simple routine for every expedition
- At camp or another safe location, tap the inventory binding.
- Check that your primary weapon, light source, healing item, and food or stamina consumable are carried.
- Assign the items that match the upcoming trip, using the backpack prompt or keyboard number keys.
- Close the inventory and hold the binding once to confirm that the expected items appear.
- Enter the hazardous area only after you know how to select each item with your current input method.
- After returning or changing equipment, repeat the check so the backpack reflects your new priorities.
This routine separates preparation from emergency use. The full inventory remains the right place for sorting and crafting, while the backpack supplies a compact action list when stopping to browse would cost time or safety.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Tap the inventory binding for the complete inventory; hold it for backpack Quick Select.
- The backpack is obtained near the start after the helicopter crash and exposes selected carried equipment.
- Assigned items remain in the ordinary inventory rather than being duplicated or permanently moved.
- Keyboard hotkeys can be assigned to hovered items with number keys 0–9 where supported, while common controls references show Item Slot 1–4 defaults.
- Controller labels and bindings vary, so the active Controls screen is the authority for your setup.
- For a beginner loadout, prioritize one weapon, one light source, one healing item, and one food or stamina consumable.
- Keep rare or situational items in the full inventory and refresh assignments after major gear changes.
