After the helicopter crash, play for a safe checkpoint rather than a dramatic expedition. Open the emergency pack, collect enough nearby supplies to make a tarp-and-stick tent, save and sleep there, then establish a routine for food, water, warmth and rest before scouting farther with Kelvin. This order gives you a recovery point and keeps early exploration from turning into a costly death loop.
Your first minutes after the crash
The opening area is a scramble, but the priorities are simple: recover your equipment, make the interface usable, and create somewhere you can save. Do not treat the crash site as a place to linger indefinitely or as a reason to sprint toward the first mysterious marker. Turn the first few minutes into a controlled setup.
1. Open the emergency pack
Interact with the emergency pack immediately. The Sons of the Forest Wiki’s Beginner’s Guide gives the same direct reminder: “Remember to open your emergency pack after the crash!” Items inside are not useful to you until you have actually opened it and collected what it contains.
2. Search the ground around the wreck
Walk a short circuit around the crash site and pick up obvious supplies. Prioritize sticks, rocks, food and water-related items because they support both a temporary shelter and your first survival cycle. Do not run a long-distance search before you have a save point; every minute spent scouting without one increases the distance you must repeat after an incapacitation.

3. Equip navigation and light
Put the GPS and a light source where you can reach them quickly. The GPS helps you orient yourself and identify important locations, while a light is essential once visibility drops or you enter an enclosed area. Keep both accessible before you begin collecting materials or following markers.
4. Decide on a short-term camp area
Choose a spot close enough to the crash site to revisit but with room to stand, gather and see approaching threats. You are not selecting a permanent headquarters yet. The first camp exists to provide a reliable save and sleep location while you learn the surrounding terrain.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Build a tarp-and-stick tent before exploring far
Your first construction target is a tent made from one tarp and one stick. It is deliberately modest: the tent is a checkpoint, not a finished base. Build it as soon as you have those two materials instead of waiting to collect a large stockpile.
How to place the first tent
- Open the Guide Book (also referred to as the Survival Book in some descriptions) and select the shelter blueprint for the tarp tent.
- Place the blueprint on level ground near your initial camp. Leave enough clearance to approach it from more than one direction.
- Add one tarp and one stick when prompted. If the placement is awkward, rotate or move the blueprint before committing materials.
- Interact with the completed tent to save your game and to sleep when your character needs recovery.
Saving and sleeping are separate decisions. Save whenever you have made meaningful progress—especially after collecting equipment, setting up a new camp or returning from an outing. Sleep when rest is becoming a limiting factor and you have a safe, supplied position. A tent that is difficult to find in darkness is a poor checkpoint, so note its position on the GPS or remember a distinctive nearby landmark.
Use a two-tent habit when you leave camp
For a longer trip, place another temporary tent before committing to a dangerous route. This gives you a nearer return point without forcing you to dismantle your original camp. Keep the first shelter as a stable fallback until you have built a more defensible permanent site.
Manage the five survival constraints
Early progress is usually limited by your condition rather than by a missing blueprint. Hunger, thirst, rest, warmth and vitality interact, so monitor the whole set instead of waiting for one meter to become critical.

| Constraint | What it affects | First-day response |
|---|---|---|
| Hunger | Your ability to sustain a trip between camps | Collect food while gathering other materials and eat before a long detour. |
| Thirst | How long you can remain active away from a water source | Keep water available before leaving camp; do not begin a cave trip already dehydrated. |
| Rest | How long you can work, travel and fight effectively | Use the tent to sleep and plan pauses before your stamina is exhausted. |
| Warmth | How safely you can remain outside in cold conditions | Use shelter, fire and warmer clothing when conditions demand it. |
| Vitality | Your health reserve and the ceiling for available stamina | Avoid unnecessary damage, recover at camp and do not force combat while weakened. |
Cold is more than a comfort penalty: the beginner guidance notes that cold limits vitality. Maximum stamina is tied to maximum vitality, so a cold or injured character cannot sustain the same sprinting, climbing or fighting routine as a healthy one. If you feel as though your stamina is unusually short, check your condition and temperature before assuming the game is malfunctioning.
Make a repeatable gathering loop
Use a short loop around camp rather than wandering randomly. Collect sticks and rocks first, then food and water, and return to the tent before rest or warmth becomes a problem. This pattern leaves you with materials for the next construction step and a known route home. As you learn the area, extend the loop toward GPS-marked points only when the original circuit is comfortable.
Learn the Guide Book, inventory and GPS together
The Guide Book is your construction reference. It lets you browse building instructions and place blueprints before you have gathered every required component. Open it when deciding what to build, not only when you are already standing in a dangerous area without the right materials.
Guide Book workflow
- Open the Guide Book from your current controls.
- Browse the shelter, utility and defensive categories available to you.
- Select a blueprint and preview its footprint on the ground.
- Confirm the location only after checking access, visibility and room to expand.
- Gather the listed materials, then return to the blueprint to complete it.
The inventory is for equipment, crafting and quick selection. Keep frequently used items assigned to quick select so you are not searching through the full inventory when an enemy appears or darkness arrives. The exact control prompt can vary by platform and update, so follow the current on-screen label rather than relying on a remembered button from an older version.

| Build or preparation | Why it comes early | Decision test |
|---|---|---|
| Tarp-and-stick tent | Creates the first save and sleep point. | Can you reach it quickly and identify it in poor visibility? |
| Fire setup | Supports warmth and gives you a safer place to pause. | Is it positioned where you can use it without blocking movement around the shelter? |
| Additional shelter | Extends your save network as you scout farther. | Will it shorten the return route from a planned destination? |
| Storage and work space | Keeps gathered materials and crafting organized as your camp grows. | Do you have a steady supply loop before committing to a larger footprint? |
| Defensive construction | Improves safety once hostile encounters become regular. | Can you see approaches and still move freely around the camp? |
Do not spend your first stock of materials on an elaborate perimeter while you still lack food, water or a nearby save. A small camp that you can maintain is more useful than an impressive structure you cannot safely reach or defend.
Choosing an opening camp without a “best” location
Evaluate possible camp sites using five practical axes. The game does not establish one universally superior location, so treat the choice as a trade-off between immediate safety and future convenience.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Axis | Questions to ask | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Safety | How close are hostile patrols, and can you see them approaching? | A remote position may be safer but farther from useful supplies. |
| Resource access | Can you gather sticks, logs, rocks, food and water without a long trip? | Resource-rich ground speeds construction but may attract more attention. |
| Save convenience | Can you reach the tent quickly after an outing? | A central camp saves travel time but may be harder to hide. |
| Mobility | Does the site connect naturally to GPS-marked locations and caves? | A mobile position supports exploration but may offer less room to expand. |
| Defensibility | Is there visibility and space for walls or traps later? | Open ground is easier to defend but can expose you to threats. |
For the first day, favor save convenience and access to basic materials. Reconsider the site after you understand nearby routes and enemy activity; relocating later is normal and does not mean the first camp was a mistake.
Use Kelvin as a gathering assistant
Kelvin is most valuable when you give him a narrowly defined task while you handle navigation and risk. Commands are issued through his notepad. He can gather, clear areas, collect logs or rocks, and work on shelter or fire-related tasks while you scout. He can alert you to enemies, but he does not fight them.
A reliable Kelvin assignment cycle
- Approach Kelvin and open the notepad interaction.
- Choose one task that matches your immediate bottleneck, such as sticks, rocks, logs, clearing, shelter or fire.
- Specify a manageable area or destination when the command offers that choice.
- Move a short distance away and complete a complementary task yourself.
- Return periodically to check his progress and change the assignment before leaving for a long expedition.
Give Kelvin work that reduces repetitive collection, not work that requires him to survive a fight. If enemies are nearby, treat his warning as information and reposition or prepare; do not expect him to hold a line. Assigning shelter or fire work can let you scout while the camp develops, but keep enough personal materials for an emergency tent.
When Kelvin appears idle
- Check that the notepad command was actually selected and acknowledged.
- Move the task to a closer, clearer area if the destination is obstructed.
- Look for an enemy warning before assuming he has stopped working.
- Reissue a simple gathering command and watch for a visible response.
- Do not leave him as your only defense; his role is support and warning, not combat.
When to explore caves and marked locations
Caves can contain useful items, but they also introduce new enemies and mysteries. Enter only after you have a working tent, a light source, basic food and water, and enough vitality and rest to retreat. A cave run should be an intentional outing with a known return route, not a panic escape from camp.

Pre-trip checklist
- Save at the nearest shelter.
- Confirm that your light source is equipped and usable.
- Carry food and water rather than relying on an unplanned find.
- Check warmth and rest; cold or fatigue reduces your margin for error.
- Identify the cave’s direction on the GPS and note a nearby outdoor landmark.
- Decide in advance where you will turn back.
Inside the cave
Keep your light ready, move slowly enough to hear or notice threats, and use stealth when it avoids an unnecessary fight. Early equipment and health are limited, so do not spend them proving that every encounter can be won. If you lose the route, stop moving, reorient with your light and GPS where possible, and return toward the last recognizable junction rather than pushing deeper.
Leave before the run becomes a death gamble
Turn back when vitality is low, stamina is repeatedly unavailable, supplies are nearly gone or you cannot identify the exit path. A partial cave trip that preserves your equipment is progress. Save again after returning to shelter before sorting items or starting another expedition.
Understand the consequences of early deaths
The death page describes a particularly severe early failure state: a second loss of all health before you have survived a day can return you to the crash site, remove inventory items and reset statistics. That consequence makes frequent shelter saves and conservative exploration more important than squeezing one more room out of a cave.

Recovery procedure
- After the first incapacitation, prioritize reaching or rebuilding a shelter.
- Save before attempting the same route again.
- Replace missing essentials—especially light, food, water and basic building materials.
- Use Kelvin for low-risk gathering while you restore your supplies.
- Delay cave exploration until your condition and equipment are stable.
If the second early death has already reset your position, treat the crash site as a restart point: reopen the emergency pack if necessary, make a new tent immediately and rebuild the short gathering loop before pursuing the lost route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical first-day schedule
This sequence is a framework rather than a timed challenge. Weather, encounters and the crash location can change how quickly each step is safe.
- Crash recovery: Open the emergency pack, gather nearby supplies, equip the GPS and prepare a light source.
- Checkpoint: Collect one tarp and one stick, place the first tent and save.
- Stabilization: Gather sticks, rocks, food and water in a short loop. Watch rest, warmth and vitality rather than maximizing distance.
- Camp support: Establish a fire-related setup and assign Kelvin a simple gathering or clearing task through his notepad.
- Orientation: Use the GPS to identify a nearby destination and walk only far enough to understand the return route.
- Decision point: If your supplies and condition remain strong, place a second temporary shelter or make a short scouting trip. If not, sleep, save and continue gathering.
- First serious expedition: Attempt a cave or distant marker only after the shelter, light, food, water and return plan are all ready.
Troubleshooting common first-day problems
“I cannot save.”
Confirm that the tarp-and-stick tent is fully built rather than only previewed as a blueprint. Approach the completed shelter and use its interaction prompt. If the prompt is absent, move around the tent, check that both materials were added and rebuild or reposition it on clearer ground.

“My stamina disappears immediately.”
Check vitality, warmth and rest. Cold limits vitality, and available stamina cannot exceed maximum vitality. Recover at shelter, improve warmth and avoid chaining sprints while hungry, thirsty or injured.

“I keep getting lost.”
Stop extending your gathering loop until you can return reliably. Mark the tent’s direction with a memorable landmark, check the GPS before every detour and place temporary shelters along longer routes.
“Kelvin is not helping.”
Reopen the notepad, assign one clear task and verify that the destination is reachable. Use nearby sticks, rocks or clearing as a test assignment. Remember that an enemy warning is not a promise that Kelvin will attack; he does not fight.
“A cave trip ended in a chain of deaths.”
Break the cycle by saving at a shelter, restoring food, water, warmth and rest, and approaching the cave from a shorter route. Use stealth, keep a light equipped and set a retreat point before entering. Repeating the same push with the same depleted condition only risks the early death reset described above.
Version and control caveat
The wiki overview lists Patch 16 Hotfix 3 as released on October 3, 2025. Controls, item locations and companion behavior can change after updates, so verify the current in-game prompts and live version before treating a particular button, location or Kelvin behavior as permanent. The priorities in this guide—opening the pack, securing a save point, managing condition, using the Guide Book and assigning Kelvin low-risk work—remain the safest way to structure a new game, while exact interface details may differ.
First-steps checklist
- Emergency pack opened and nearby supplies collected.
- GPS and a light source equipped and easy to reach.
- Tarp-and-stick tent built, used to save and sleep.
- Food, water, warmth, rest and vitality checked before travel.
- Guide Book and inventory understood well enough to place a blueprint and use quick selection.
- Kelvin given a gathering, clearing, shelter or fire task through the notepad.
- First cave or distant-marker trip planned only after a save, supplies and a return route are ready.
- Additional shelter planned before a long expedition.
The Bottom Line
The safest opening is deliberately methodical: open the pack, make the one-tarp/one-stick tent, save and sleep, stabilize your condition, delegate low-risk work to Kelvin, and explore caves only when you can afford to retreat. That sequence protects your equipment and turns the island’s first day into a series of recoverable decisions.
