Sons of the Forest has seven armor types: Leaf, Hide, Bone, Creepy, Tech, Ancient (the renamed Golden Armor), and Solafite (the upgraded form of Bone Armor). Four are made from ordinary materials, Creepy Armor is taken from skinned mutants, Ancient Armor is a late-game cave find, and Solafite Armor is created in an Armor Plater. This guide gives the location or source for every set, explains the materials and progression requirements, and separates ordinary replaceable armor from Ancient Armor’s special damage-resistance system.
Every armor type at a glance
Use this table to choose a realistic target for your current stage. Conventional armor pieces can be replaced as they break. Ancient Armor is different: it is a complete progression outfit with its own mitigation rules rather than a stack of ten conventional pieces.

Armor values and progression gates can change in future patches. If a major update changes a recipe, cave entrance, or armor behavior, verify the current in-game description and the latest Sons of the Forest Wiki entry before committing rare materials.
How the armor system works
Conventional armor pieces
Leaf, Hide, Bone, Creepy, Tech, and Solafite use the normal piece-based system. You carry or equip individual pieces, and damaged pieces can be replaced by crafting or looting more. For these sets, the practical question is not only “which is strongest?” but also “can I replace it in the area where I am playing?” A theoretically stronger set is a poor expedition choice if one lost piece requires a long trip to a printer or a dangerous cave.

Ancient Armor’s separate model
Ancient Armor is a complete progression outfit rather than ten breakable pieces. It does not use the same replacement loop as the craftable sets. Its published mitigation figures are 30% damage resistance against cannibals and other mutants and 70% against demons. Treat it as a late-game objective with story utility, not as an early replacement for Bone or Creepy Armor.
Resource availability matters more than a simple tier list
Leaves and cloth are usually easier to gather than electronics or Solafite. Hides are tied to wildlife, bones to combat sites and caves, and Creepy pieces to mutant encounters. That makes “best armor” situational: the best set is the one you can keep complete while preserving the resources needed for medicine, weapons, tools, and progression.
Leaf Armor: the immediate fallback
Where the materials come from
Collect leaves from ordinary vegetation and cloth from the cloth items you find while exploring. Leaf Armor is crafted directly in the inventory; no printer, bunker, blueprint, or special cave is required.

Leaf Armor is most useful immediately after starting a save, during a long scouting trip, or whenever your normal set has broken and you are short on bones, hides, or electronic parts. It is also renewable: as long as you can gather foliage and cloth, you can rebuild pieces without hunting a particular animal or fighting a particular mutant.
What to plan for
Do not interpret its easy recipe as proof that it is the strongest option. The cited material does not provide a numeric durability figure for Leaf Armor, so judge it by availability rather than an invented statistic. Keep cloth in reserve instead of converting every piece at once; cloth is useful for several other survival recipes.
Hide Armor: hunt for a renewable animal supply
Animal sources
Hide Armor is made from animal hides. Practical routes use deer or moose as the source animals. Wildlife availability varies by region and by how much you have already hunted, so scout the area around your base before relying on Hide Armor for a long expedition.

Crafting and replacement
When you have the required hide and cloth in your inventory, craft the pieces in the normal inventory interface. Store spare hides near your base if you intend to use this as your regular set. A damaged piece is only convenient to replace if animals are still available nearby; otherwise you may have to switch temporarily to Leaf or Bone Armor.

Hide Armor suits players who already maintain a hunting loop and want a material source that does not require mutant combat or a 3D Printer. It is less predictable for a cave-focused run, where wildlife may be far from the route.
Bone Armor: the foundation for Solafite
Finding bones
Bone Armor is crafted from bones and cloth. Bones commonly accumulate at combat sites and in caves, so search the remains of fights and explore cave interiors rather than waiting for a specific animal spawn. The cited guide confirms the recipe components but does not establish a universal quantity for each piece; use the quantities shown by your current in-game crafting interface.
Why Bone Armor remains important
Bone Armor is more than a conventional mid-game option because it is the required base item for Solafite Armor. If Solafite is your eventual goal, avoid consuming every bone and every cloth item as soon as you find them. Build a reserve large enough to craft the pieces you plan to plate.
Efficient collection route
- Clear or revisit combat areas and caves where bones are visible.
- Collect cloth during the same trip so the two requirements do not bottleneck one another.
- Craft Bone Armor at a safe base before entering a difficult cave.
- Keep unplated Bone Armor available until you have enough Solafite and are ready to trigger the Armor Plater event.
Creepy Armor: skin mutants with the utility knife
How to obtain a piece
Kill a mutant, equip the utility knife, and skin the body to obtain Creepy Armor. The game does not require a separate blueprint or printer for this set. The Sons of the Forest Wiki lists Creepy Armor durability as 80.

Why it is renewable
Mutants continue to appear as you explore caves and hostile areas, so Creepy Armor can be replenished through combat rather than a finite pickup. The Solafite Cave route can also produce mutants that yield Creepy Armor. That makes the set practical for players who are already fighting mutants and do not want to spend printer supplies or underground Solafite.

Safe harvesting routine
- Clear nearby threats before standing over a body; a second mutant can interrupt the skinning animation.
- Equip the utility knife and interact with the mutant corpse.
- Collect the armor piece and check your equipped slots before moving on.
- Carry healing supplies and a fallback piece of armor, because harvesting in an active cave can leave you exposed.
Creepy Armor is a reliable mid- to late-game choice, but its renewable supply is tied to your willingness and ability to fight mutants. Players avoiding mutant-heavy routes may find Bone or Hide easier to maintain.
Tech Armor: print Tech Mesh, then assemble the electronics
Printer location
The crafting guide identifies the 3D Printer Cave in the central-western area as an early printer location. Reach a 3D Printer, produce Tech Mesh, and then combine the mesh with the other components required by the recipe.
Required material categories
Tech Armor is resource-intensive because the recipe depends on more than printed mesh. The listed components include batteries, a circuit board, duct tape, wire, and the printed Tech Mesh. The exact quantity for every piece is not established in the cited material, so follow the quantities displayed by your current crafting interface rather than relying on a fixed number from an older guide.

- Locate the printer and confirm that it has enough printer resin for Tech Mesh.
- Check your inventory for batteries, a circuit board, duct tape, and wire before starting the print.
- Print the mesh, then craft the armor pieces from the inventory recipe.
- Return to a secure base before using the set in a major cave, because replacing a lost piece requires another printer trip and another electronics check.
Tech Armor is a good fit when you have already searched several bunkers and printer locations. It is a poor emergency option when you are stranded away from a printer with only common organic materials available.
Ancient Armor: find the former Golden Armor in the cultist cave
Where to look
Ancient Armor is the current name for Golden Armor. It is found deep inside the cultist cave beside a large lake near the mountain. Location descriptions identify the approach as either the large lake at the mountain’s south-western base or the large lake on the mountain’s eastern side; use the lake-and-mountain landmarks rather than an unverified coordinate.
Why it is a progression objective
The cave is a late-game destination, and reaching the item requires committing to deep cave exploration. Plan for a long trip: bring weapons, healing items, light, food, and enough inventory space to leave with the armor and any other progression items you find. The armor is not a routine early-game pickup.

How its protection differs
Ancient Armor does not break, and its protection is expressed as resistance rather than a conventional stack of replaceable pieces. It provides 30% damage resistance against cannibals and other mutants and 70% against demons. Those figures make it particularly relevant when your route includes demon encounters, but they do not turn the armor into a substitute for positioning, blocking, or weapon upgrades.
Gate interaction
Ancient Armor is tied to the late-game magma-cavern progression. When the relevant gate checks for the plated or updated progression outfit, the game uses the armor automatically instead of asking you to manage it like an ordinary ten-slot set. Keep it available after you retrieve it; do not treat it as disposable combat padding.
Solafite Armor: plate Bone Armor in the Armor Plater
What Solafite Armor is
Solafite Armor is the current name for Golden Bone Armor. It is not picked up as a finished set. You first craft Bone Armor, then convert each piece in an Armor Plater.
Solafite and blueprint locations
Solafite deposits are primarily underground. The Solafite Cave south-east of the golf course and Maintenance Bunker C are important targets: the cave provides deposits, while Maintenance Bunker C contains the Solafite Upgrader blueprint. Explore with enough lighting and combat supplies to leave safely with the resource.
Plating cost and the attack event
Each Bone Armor piece consumes 12 Solafite when plated. The Armor Plater documentation also states that plating starts a Solafite Storm, attracting waves of mutants. Do not begin the conversion in an exposed camp with no escape route.

- Craft the Bone Armor piece you intend to upgrade.
- Collect 12 Solafite for that piece; multiply by the number of pieces you plan to plate.
- Find and use an Armor Plater.
- Place the Bone Armor piece in the plater and confirm the conversion to Solafite Armor.
- Prepare for the Solafite Storm immediately after plating. Secure the area, fight or evade the incoming mutants, and recover before starting another conversion.
Why the upgrade is expensive but valuable
Solafite Armor is described as the highest-durability armor, making it attractive for sustained combat. Its real cost is broader than 12 Solafite: you also need the Bone Armor base, the time to reach underground deposits, and the ability to survive the attack event for every plating session. Plate the pieces you will actually use rather than converting your entire bone stock before a dangerous expedition.

Which armor is best for each stage?

There is no universal winner. Choose by the resource loop you can maintain: ordinary gathering favors Leaf, hunting favors Hide, cave salvage favors Bone, mutant combat favors Creepy, printer access favors Tech, and late-game progression favors Ancient or Solafite depending on whether you need special resistance or durable conventional pieces.
A complete acquisition checklist
- Start with Leaf Armor. Gather leaves and cloth and craft a temporary set while mapping your surroundings.
- Choose a renewable route. Hunt deer or moose for Hide, search combat sites and caves for Bone, or skin mutants with the utility knife for Creepy.
- Secure printer access. Visit the central-western 3D Printer Cave, gather batteries, a circuit board, duct tape, wire, and resin, and print Tech Mesh if you want Tech Armor.
- Prepare for the mountain lake cave. Bring late-game supplies and explore the cultist cave to obtain Ancient Armor, formerly called Golden Armor.
- Build the Solafite path. Craft Bone Armor, visit underground Solafite deposits such as the Solafite Cave south-east of the golf course, and find the Solafite Upgrader blueprint in Maintenance Bunker C.
- Plate deliberately. Use the Armor Plater, spend 12 Solafite per Bone Armor piece, and defend yourself during the Solafite Storm.
- Reserve Ancient Armor for progression. Keep it after retrieval because it is connected to the late-game magma-cavern gate and is not replaced like ordinary armor pieces.
Troubleshooting common problems
“I cannot craft the set I want.”
- Leaf requires leaves and cloth; Hide requires animal hides; Bone requires bones and cloth. If the recipe is absent, check that the materials are in your inventory and that you are using the normal inventory crafting interface.
- Tech requires a 3D Printer for Tech Mesh as well as batteries, a circuit board, duct tape, and wire. Finding cloth or bones will not unlock it.
- Solafite cannot be crafted directly from deposits. You need a Bone Armor piece and an Armor Plater.
“I found Golden Armor in an old guide but cannot find that name.”
Search for Ancient Armor in current guides and in-game references. Ancient is the renamed Golden Armor entry.
“I have Solafite but the upgrade is not working.”
Confirm that you are placing Bone Armor, not an already plated piece, in the Armor Plater. The documented cost is 12 Solafite per piece. Also clear a safe area before confirming, because the conversion starts the Solafite Storm and mutant waves.
“I need coordinates.”
Use landmarks first: the central-western printer cave, the mountain lake beside the cultist cave, the Solafite Cave south-east of the golf course, and Maintenance Bunker C. A consistently verified GPS-coordinate list is not established here, and cave entrances can change with patches; check the current in-game map before committing to a coordinate-based route.
“My armor behaves differently after an update.”
Armor values, recipes, names, and progression requirements can change. Recheck the current in-game recipe and the latest wiki documentation after a major patch, especially for Solafite plating, Ancient Armor’s gate interaction, and cave access.
Planning your loadout before a difficult expedition
- Carry a renewable fallback. Leaf or Bone Armor can cover a failed hunt or a depleted mutant route.
- Do not spend every cloth item on armor if the same trip also requires healing or utility recipes.
- For Tech, verify printer resin and every electronic component before entering a cave; a half-complete recipe is dead weight.
- For Creepy, keep the utility knife accessible and harvest only after the area is secure.
- For Solafite, calculate the number of pieces first: 12 Solafite per piece, plus enough Bone Armor bases and supplies to survive the storm.
- For Ancient, treat the armor as a progression item and keep it available for the late-game gate rather than using it as a disposable replacement set.
