Sonos Play is most compelling if you want one speaker to move between a Sonos home setup and Bluetooth listening away from it. Sonos advertises up to 24 hours of battery life, an IP67-rated design and phone charging, but those are manufacturer claims—not results established by independent testing here. At a reported U.S. launch-period price of $299, it sits between the smaller Roam 2 and larger Move 2; whether that middle ground is worth it depends on how often you will use Wi-Fi at home.
What Sonos Play is—and what it is not
Sonos announced Play on March 10, 2026, positioning it as a portable speaker for home and away. It supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so it can serve as part of a home Sonos system and as a wireless speaker when you are not relying on home Wi-Fi. That dual role is the product’s defining proposition; a Bluetooth-only speaker may make more sense if you do not need the home-network side.
Sonos calls Play “the brand’s most versatile speaker with rich stereo sound that’s designed to live at home and move seamlessly beyond it.” That is the company’s launch description, not an independent listening conclusion. The available independent reviews provide context and positioning, but their full test methodology and a complete set of measured results are not established here. This review therefore does not claim hands-on testing or make unverified sound-quality judgments.
How Play compares with Roam 2 and Move 2
RTINGS positions Play between Sonos Roam 2 and Move 2 in size and price. That makes it a middle option, not an automatic upgrade: choose according to where you will carry it, whether you need Wi-Fi/Sonos-system use, and how much speaker you want to manage on outings.
#1 Best Overall
- Delivers seriously big stereo sound and deep bass in a take-anywhere design
- Up to 24 hours of playback and easy charging with included Wireless Charging Base.

- Drop-resistant durability plus waterproof and dustproof protection (IP67).
- Stream over WiFi with your Sonos system at home, and stream with Bluetooth anywhere.
| Speaker | Best fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Sonos Roam 2 | Prioritize the smaller, easier-to-carry end of the Sonos portable range. | RTINGS places it below Play in size and price; choose it if compactness matters more than moving up to Play’s middle position. |
| Sonos Play | Want one speaker for Wi-Fi-based home use and Bluetooth listening away from home. | Its value depends on actually using both roles; a Bluetooth-only alternative may be simpler if you do not need the Sonos home-network experience. |
| Sonos Move 2 | Prefer the larger end of this Sonos comparison. | RTINGS places it above Play in size and price; it is less suited to someone whose main priority is compact carrying. |
Current prices for Roam 2 and Move 2 are not established here, so compare live prices before deciding. Likewise, check Sonos’s current Play product page for exact streaming-service support and ecosystem features rather than assuming every service or feature is available.
Battery, durability and replaceability
Battery life and phone charging
Sonos advertises up to 24 hours of battery life and says Play can charge a phone. “Up to” is a ceiling in the company’s specification, not a guarantee for every listening session. SoundGuys notes that runtime depends on conditions including listening volume, so expect louder playback or other demanding use to affect endurance. No independent runtime measurement is established here.

Water and dust protection
Sonos describes Play as IP67-rated. Treat that as a manufacturer-stated rating, not a promise that every kind of water exposure or use is covered. Consult Sonos’s product documentation for the rating’s specific limits and care guidance before using the speaker in wet conditions.

Replaceable battery
Sonos says the battery is replaceable, a useful longevity detail. The available information does not establish whether a replacement battery is currently sold separately, its price, or the repair process. Confirm those details with Sonos before treating replaceability as a practical repair option.

- The new acoustic architecture replaces Move's single tweeter with two, unlocking a higher-fidelity stereo soundstage with crisp vocals and detailed instruments. With deep, dynamic bass powered by the precision-tuned woofer, you'll feel the emotional charge of a live performance.
- With automatic Trueplay tuning, Move 2 continually optimizes the sound for its surroundings. So, no matter where you are or what you play, you get the best listening experience.
- Listen twice as long as with the previous generation. All the acoustic updates work in concert for increased efficiency, giving you up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge.
- Shock absorbent materials protect against accidental drops, and the IP56 rating ensures spills, splashes, rain, dirt, and dust don't dampen your listening experience.
- Use the built-in handle to bring your music from one place to the next. When the battery needs a boost, set Move 2 on the included Wireless Charging Base, upgraded with a detachable power cable and more compact adapter. Charge on the go with any USB-PD power supply.
Price and value
TechRadar reported a U.S. price of $299 in its March 26, 2026 review. That is launch-period context, not a verified current price. Check Sonos’s official U.S. product page for live pricing, colors and availability.
At that historical price point, the decision is less about whether Play is simply “better” than a smaller or larger speaker and more about whether its two modes justify the middle ground. If you will use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth regularly, the combination may suit a single-speaker setup. If you mainly want a speaker for travel, or mostly leave one in a fixed home location, compare the smaller Roam 2, larger Move 2 and Bluetooth-only options on current price and portability before paying for capabilities you may not use.
